Ok, I was wondering about it if it comes back on sale. Should I bother getting the D&D pack from GOG from their summer sale? I like D&D but I never played them in the old days. Have they aged poorly? Can the issues be modded or patched out? I play Pathfinder so it would be easier to get into the game than when I first tried it years ago.

Thoughts?

Well, Planescape: Torment, and Baldur's Gate are heralded as some of the best RPGs. Neverwinter Nights is solid, if you disregard the original campaign NWN 2 is also rather good outside the OC (though, I've only played that and it was better than the NWN OC).

Whether you'll like them is a different thing, though. I like them. That doesn't mean everybody would. I think, if you're into BioWare RPGs, it's not a bad pack at all, if you're into older RPGs it's even better. If you're after it simply because "D&D", then might not be as good.

I have NWN2 and am not interested in playing that any more. Bad campaign ruined it for me.

I'm mainly concerned if they aged poorly. If they are playable nowadays, then I will consider. If they are barely playable due to bad or aged design.

I'm hardly the person to judge that properly...I tend to look past most things, so I can rarely tell how well things aged. With that said, BG is probably going to be slightly off. Or a bit more than slightly. It's recognisable as a BioWare RPG but they've gone and improved on the formula since then. Also P:T along with BG uses the AD&D ruleset which compared to 3.X (which includes Pathfinder) makes less sense. For example, you'll meet the concept of THAC0, if you haven't before - "To Hit Armor Class 0". It's basically the attack bonus but lower is better. It does make sense when you think about it a bit but I still find it needlessly backwards.

What D&D pack?

And if you buy from GOG can you redownload if its deleted or lost or is it a one time download? I am considering buying some stuff from there but I want to make sure its not a one time purchase first

It's not on sale today but I expect it to come back again.

And your GOG games are connected to your GOG account so you can re-download it later.

As far as aging poorly goes, it depends on your tolerance for dice-roll combat. In a real life game of D&D, dice-roll combat can make each experience unique and unpredictable. The same can be said when applied to videogames, but I find it to be much more frustrating. It's hard to formulate a decent strategy when you can't even be confidant in how often your attacks will hit. There were fights that absolutely destroyed my party, and then when I tried again for the tenth time or so, I beat the fight easily, purely based on luck, without any change in strategy. That's not to say that there's no potential for strategy, it's just that these strategies aren't always reliable.

And, to be fair, the missing because of dice-rolls issue becomes less prevalent the further you get into the game, since your attack stat and THAC0 will be higher.

EDIT: I feel that I didn't give these games enough credit in my original post. I bought the pack recently, and while the games were frustrating at first, that was mainly because I wasn't familiar with the D&D rule set.

The games still offer you a big world to become immersed in, and they (the ones I've tried, at least) do offer an old-school vibe of adventure. I know that's hard to define, but it's true.
