Ok, I was wondering about it if it comes back on sale. Should I bother getting the D&D pack from GOG from their summer sale? I like D&D but I never played them in the old days. Have they aged poorly? Can the issues be modded or patched out? I play Pathfinder so it would be easier to get into the game than when I first tried it years ago.
Thoughts?
As far as aging poorly goes, it depends on your tolerance for dice-roll combat. In a real life game of D&D, dice-roll combat can make each experience unique and unpredictable. The same can be said when applied to videogames, but I find it to be much more frustrating. It's hard to formulate a decent strategy when you can't even be confidant in how often your attacks will hit. There were fights that absolutely destroyed my party, and then when I tried again for the tenth time or so, I beat the fight easily, purely based on luck, without any change in strategy. That's not to say that there's no potential for strategy, it's just that these strategies aren't always reliable.
And, to be fair, the missing because of dice-rolls issue becomes less prevalent the further you get into the game, since your attack stat and THAC0 will be higher.
EDIT: I feel that I didn't give these games enough credit in my original post. I bought the pack recently, and while the games were frustrating at first, that was mainly because I wasn't familiar with the D&D rule set.
The games still offer you a big world to become immersed in, and they (the ones I've tried, at least) do offer an old-school vibe of adventure. I know that's hard to define, but it's true.
