I would probably be in the City studying magic at a Arcane University trying to make sense of things and developing weaponry to fight evils.

The ingenious design about the Scientific Method is that it works even if magic exist.

Theory of Fireball
E = FireplaneAttunement * Arcanity * (Regentlevel * Regentangle) + Mana^2 / MaxHeatResistance + range

Now, you need a E over 230 to effectively "oneshot" a Unarmored regular greenbreed Goblin
I wonder if sorcerers get penalized for practicing magic without knowing any of these formulae?

Like I said last time this thread came up, I'd spend my time boiling my water and advising others to do the same. A medieval style world is (literally and figuratively) a crappy place to live.

That's where this thread differs in that all of modern technology and cultural development is still in place. Just think of our world with a plastic covering of Forgotten Realms stretched onto it.

So, while there are microwaves and stoves around, do you still want to keep boiling that water?

Ah, right, I missed that point.

However, if you have adventuring parties, it implies that there are plenty of monsters that need killing around, and that the government authorities aren't up to it. In which case you'd expect society is on the verge of collapsing, and the infrastructure wont last.

If society and the infrastructure remains stable, I don't think it'd make a difference. I'm using a magic box created from the fossilised remains of pre-historic forests that were home to bizarre beasts long since dead which have become buried and not seen sunlight for millions of years. C'mon, don't listen to microsoft, that's just magic.

I would most likely devote myself to some kind of transformation magic. Screw being human! I wanna be a half tiger-wolverine-trex-shark-kingcobra killing machine. All with the ability to turn back into human when I feel like going back into town.

Sweet.

Interesting question!
And one I honestly don't think I know the answer to...

Perhaps a Cleric? Being gifted powers is certainly proof enough of a gods existence, so that's the real world problem out of the way.
And being able to help both the poor and adventurers with my powers seems a noble enough life.

Plus, plenty of for silent reading, contemplation and everyone would want me for the team ;)
I'd need to find a non-chaste brotherhood though, that would throw a spanner in the works...

I suspect it would cause more problems than you might think.

Sure you can pray for spells, which handily serves to confirm your faith in your god, but so can everybody else. And that's not just talking relatively benign mainstream stuff, either. Even people with really horrible and repugnant beliefs - they've got some divine backing in their corner as well.

In the face of that sort of situation, religious strife doesn't evaporate it gets justified.

Stay in magic school, learn Necromancy on the side and hunt the woods for rabbits to kill and resurrect before building a huge black tower with pits of lava and undead minotaur guardians.

Then resurrect a massive army of skellies and take over the world, while chilling on my bony throne with an posse of succubi.

I'd be a blacksmith. Preferably one of high enough talent to be creating beautiful, effective weaponry and armor for the most daring of adventurers. I'd have a magician friend/sidekick who would enchant my creations as well. We'd be approached by an evil tyrant and forced to make equipment for him and his elite guard. I'd devise a cunning plan to create some weak, yet decorative looking weapons inlaid with the most beautiful false gems and have my magician ally enchant them with curses such as Gender Re-alignment and Burden. Then I'd take all the commission and build a small shop in a very remote location and only offer our services to the most committed of adventurers. It would be grand, I assure you.

In a D&D campaign my friend was playing, there were no Gods. We figured that the Clerics were actually just neutral evil con-men and their 'magic' required a supply of flash powder and bandages to be effective. Paladins were pretty much just fanatical zealots and considered Chaotic Evil.
