Hi guys.

I?ve been wondering lately. Power. Is it really worth having? Is it worth having influence over people or the world around you? True, you might be able to do some good with it but consider what you may have to do to get it.

Take for example the tragic (to some) case of Darth Vader. For those who have never watched the Star Wars films, let me give you a quick briefing. Darth Vader, formerly Anakin Skywalker, was a member of a knightly order of quasi-religious peacekeepers known as Jedi. He was considered one of the best of his time. However, he was plagued in his later career by nightmares of hi beloved wife Padme dying during childbirth. This possible future caused him to be come frustrated and angry at everyone he knew.

Eventually, a man by the name of Darth Sidious, a dark lord of an order known as the Sith, the enemies of the Jedi, tempted him to the ?dark side? with promises o the power to save his wife?s life. However, this power would come at a heavy cost. In order to become strong enough with the dark side, Anakin was asked to commit an act of unspeakable evil. He, along with an army provided by Sidious, marched into the temple of the Jedi and slaughtered every last one of them, right down to the last child.

This is my question for all of you. If you were offered a great deal of unimaginable power, power perhaps to save the lives of people you love, would you accept it if you knew you would have to do something terrible to attain it?

True, what you do with that power may have the best of intentions, but the people around you may come to despise you for what you?ve done to get it.

Just look at Anakin, he tried to get the power to save his wife, yet when she discovered what he had done to get that power she rejected him in horror.

Is such power worth it, when you may have to give up everything you believe in and hold dear to yourself to get it?

Yes, power is nice. Power can get you what you wanted back. Darth Vader could've stopped whining and just killed the emperor and then he would've been accepted back with the Jedis and maybe Yoda could have revived whatever the hell her name was.

You seem to think I would use my power to do good.

Perhaps I'd do good in the long run, but I would think that humanity needs incentive to not misbehave.

Not to mention I could use my power to get tailors to make an awesome uniform.

There is always another way.

Anakin took the easy way out. I would travel the galaxy looking for a way to save her instead. And if all else fails, I would not ruin any chance at being the father of the child, MY child, she died to give.

Well given that this is one of the Wizards rules in the Sword of Truth series "The greatest harm is caused with the best intentions" no I would take the power. Besides absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is called the dark side for a reason. Not the well it could be dark side just depends on how you use your power side.

What? Of course power is necessary. If you don't have some power you can't influence the world around you from your will. You have to rely entirely upon others. Is it worth becoming the very thing you sought to destroy? Probably not. But if you can do great good with that power, even if you've become a monster, then isn't it worth it? I'm sure this is because of my "the ends justify the means (for the most part)" view and that some will disagree with my arguement, but I would probably still be willing to damn myself if it meant saving alot of others.

And I've always liked this quote: "Power corrupts. Absolute power is kinda neat."

Hmmm. It's interesting when I think of the darkside I think of vegetarians and health inspectors, but you're actually talking about 'THE' darkside.

True power comes from within and has no side except your own. If it's dark its that way because you've decided that the only way you can get something done is by taking that path. Using the Skywalker anallegy, Sidious saw the potential in Anakin long before he turned the young man into his pawn. Sidious promised much power, but the power was already there to be exploited within a young doubtfull man without the wit or experience to see he was a patsie.

Likewise it is also 'the darkside' to turn away from power. If the potential is within you then you should not fear it. In my late teens I had a brief episode where I tried my best to achieve nothing. I had seen inside myself - aparently - and saw only dark festering designs. I realised I had great potential but withdrew from it believing no good would come of it. How wrong was I. What I should have done was sieze that power and let my character rise above my own doubts.

To abridge a line from the film Nightwatch ' In this world of fear and doubt it seems easier to extinguish the light within than face the darkness about'.

I would renounce any chance to claim power if it would cause suffering or hardship to any person.

Ahh yes...Hell is paved with good intentions. How many times have we heard someone say "We were only trying to help!"

Judging by your avatar good sir, you look quite dappa already. Or are the tailors to dress your police as they give 'humanity its incentive to not misbehave'? ;-)>

Dark and light is subjective. If I had the unholy powers of satan, yet I used them in a non evil way (not even necessarily good, just non evil), am I evil?

This is one of the reasons I have a hard time getting into star wars, as it rarely ever shows this view, and when it does, it ends up with the guy ALWAYS getting corrupt and having the ideology forbidden.

Sith logic.
you get it.

OT: Yes I would do lots for such a power.
Perhaps not THAT but I would go far for serious power, and then I'd go rogue and use it for fun.

Because I'm like that.

Obviously you are kidding, as everyone in developed nations has seen Star Wars, unless they are blind. Star Wars is advertised everywhere and chances are that they have seen one of the episodes or cartoons at least once.

This is the same as asking whether the end justifies the means isn't it? At least that's how I see it. I would answer your question the same as I answer the ends=means questions - no, I would not perform some unspeakable act to gain power, even if that power would in turn do good things. Also, I do not believe the end justifies the means.
