What happened to those good old times where most racing games had a splitscreen multiplayer? I think many racers would've been better if they'd bothered to add a splitscreen mode(For example Flatout 2).
Do any of you miss that, or is it just me? And if you do what games would you like to get the splitscreen multiplayer mode?
My greatest split screen memory is when i had 007:Nightfire ,,,,,the greatest splitscreen game ever we had 4 controllers and 8 Players we made so many matches and rules like when ever someone had a Tribomb they had to shout out "Tribomb !" meaning that we were not allowed to kill them unless they planted it the tribomb making the game much more fun
oh and the great fight for the golden gun ,,,,,,,,,,,,it took a careful push of the anolog stick and the triangle button to make the jump to get that one shot kill gun

Dam those were the days
I loved Nightfire.

I still do.

Yeah- whatever happened to split screen on the PC? I remember watching half of a 15" 4:3 monitor using WASD and the left control/alt/shift keys to control my character while my friend used the arrow keys and the right control/alt/shift keys. Sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, stealing glances at each others half of the screen. Those were the good old days! We should all forget about LAN parties and Internet games and go back to that.

Seriously, I always found split-screen on the console to be distracting but tolerable. Split-screen on the PC just plain sucked and I don't mourn its passing in the slightest.

Condolences and all that. But, dude, split-screen is still used alot. Probably by almost every gamer who doesn't have an internet connection.
Well, it might also be that i only have pc so i dont know if consoles have splitscreens or not.
You're complaining about PC games not having split-screen modes? I'm sorry, but that doesn't strike me as a worthwhile argument. Two people playing a game on one computer at the same time would be incredibly cramped. On consoles, however, the split-screen is still often incorporated into the multiplayer mode.

Not long since I played that game. Too bad fewer and fewer games have split screen ability and fewer and fewer games have the ability to tweak the game settings more, or feature fun stuff.

I'm not actually sure.

I still own the case, but I have mislaid the disc somewhere.

Last time I searched, I didn't find anything.

I'm still hoping to find it someday.

I wish more games had split screen. I mean, some people actually have friends that want to play the games at their house. I don't know why you couldn't at least try to put split screen in the game.

Smash Bros.
Now that I think about it, Wii games have succumbed to this too. It seems like smash bros and wii sports is the only thing supporting 4 players at once.
Mario Kart Wii.

But, yeah, 4-player split-screen there sort of kills the frame rate.

Split screen still exists, just it is becoming less prevalent due to more intensive graphics.
The only example of this right now could be Killzone 2, and quite frankly, I would rather a less graphically intesive game for a solid co-op experience.
I'm not saying it's a good thing, ?'m just saying it's whats happening. Most of the current gen games that allow splitscreen tone down the graphics in one way or another to allow it.

Yeah I wasn't saying you were, and I realised you were simply stating it, and I was stating my opinion. Either way if that's what needs to be done, then either tone it down to begin with or keep at it, I just hope that Co-op isn't starting to die out (quite the contrary when I look at games like RE5 and CoD: WaW, but it could still begin to happen, Killzone 2 being the example, so I'm agreeing with you).

That game was godlike, and so was Agent Under Fire for a multiplayer experience. Those grappling hooks made the game I swear, I still remember the castle stage where you and others would grapple across the walls firing at each other mid air.

Actually, was Agent Under Fire a better multiplayer experience, or was Nightfire better in your opinion?

Split screen isn't dead but it is dying somewhat. This generations split screen games can be counted on two hands.
I thought it was making a bit of a comeback. I've seen a larger percentage of games with split-screen coop for instance than those of the last generation.

And if it's not in a lot of retail titles, but a lot of XBLA (and possibly PSN, though I wouldn't know since I don't own a PS3) titles support hotseat and split screen for multiple players. Castle Crashers, Aegis Wing and Schizoid just to mention a few.

Bomberman Blast on Wiiware has a whopping 8 player mode on the same screen. That shit is hectic as hell.

Didn't Burnout Paradise eschew splitscreen entirely, after Burnout revenge rocked with it? Just another reason it's a step backward.

Personally, I like splitscreen for all its flaws; too many great hours in Gears and Halo played that way.

What i find really scary is the gradual decrease of split screen in consoles, since consoles where specifically made to play with friends in the same room. Games like Halo 2 and 3 where you and some friends could enjoy the limitless fun of playing Infection on a map shaped like a giant ... well. Nightfire, Timespitters,Cod 2, heck even soul caliber to some extent where golden games. But through the next gen consoles, split screen has been constricted. Gears of war 1 and 2 only having 2 player, Killzone 2 actively crippling itself for no reason. Some racing games are even withdrawing spitscreen. It is a shame that consoles, (evolved from arcade machines) that have been specifically design to be played in the same room are being taken over by the PC population that play online or singularly. PC truthfully are either played against AI of online, the addition of online to consoles, without the ability to play with your friends online is just a stupid development.

Yes there is the argument that split-screen means that the graphics cannot be enjoyed as much, or that the missions that where based for online play wouldn't work. But when did we start sacrificing gameplay for graphics, or selectively make game types that arnt completely accessible? Yes its also more work to make a split screen, but making a game is work in itself, and compared to the amount of time that some games put into things like soundtracks, and high quality cutscenes, you think they could divert some into the "same room" part of the game.
There are certain genres that have not taken into consideration what those genres actually mean to people. Shooters, racing, sports... the only reliable game genre that you can trust to have multiplayer is fighters, and thats simply because they can be on the same screen.

In some sort of conclusion, i have given up hoping that the next Timespitters will come out soon, and that anybody with half a brain cell past Valve, who on the subject could of made Left 4 Dead 4 player but moving on. Is going to make a split screen, 4 player, maybe if pigs start to fly, 4 player co op game that can beat the games made by there forefathers.

Games that should of been split screen (Killzone 2, Dune, Chrome Hounds, Cod 3, Resistance 2, Halo wars, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 2 modern combat, Blacksight, Frontlines Fuels of War,Prey, Quake 4, Unreal Championships 2, Motor storm, Burnout Paradise,)

Ac

P.S. Any game developer that claims that there game could not work without a certain amount of players is obviously not bothered to make bots.
