Speaking the truth. People get angry at critics because they have no identity of themselves, and must latch onto a game, or a company. That's why you have fanboys.

Wait... People take Yahtzee seriously?

Also, people that take reviews to heart without trying the title and forming their own opinion aren't worth getting mad about, OP.

Who cares what some schmuck with a keyboard thinks? If I enjoy the game, I'm gonna damn well enjoy it. Always nice to see that others enjoy it, but at the end of the day it doesn't affect how I feel about a game.

I always find it ridiculous when people get upset about something an entertainer says. For example, everyone gets mad at Jeremy Clarkson, which is ridiculous, because he does it for the shock humour.

Eh, there's a difference between a bad review and a negative review. If Yahtzee blathers on about how bad a game is because it has lots of oyster monster dancing, that might well draw in lots of oyster monster dancing fans.

...

On the other hand, I HATE reviewers who are factually wrong. If you are going to say "this makes no sense" or "this was never explained", it better not have been explained by someone at any point.

As much as I agree with your sentiment, it sounds like you also have too much time to be angry.

This is the way people are online. Ignore them. Move on.

God. Why am I writing this? This is an absolutely terrible idea.
I have seen so many threads on these forums that should have had this at the beginning.

I'm with those who assume insecurity at the heart of people getting pissy about others not sharing their likes. While I like meeting people who are into the same things I am, I don't take it personally if someone isn't.

A little part of my brain just popped out of place. Thanks for that.

OT: I figured this out quickly. Sure, he occasionally just outright lies, but generally he doesn't, and he fully embraces and points out that he's not here to tell you what to buy, he's just here to point out ALL THE BLEMISHES.

I used to get like that when somthing that I liked was criticized (esecpially with the smug superiority of Yhatzee)

however thease days I can kind of ignore/understand it

except for Mass effect, that reserves a special spot

(Paraphrasing) I like Citizen Kane and love Bastion. There's probably some people who don't. I don't have a problem with that. They often come down to subjective viewpoints in which neither party can be objectively right, and so people who go out-of-their-minds-ballistic at Yahtzee/other reviewers are silly/missing the point.
Nice general sentiment, gotta agree with you there. Just to throw it out there, not a fan of either Citizen Kane or Bastion. It's been a while since I saw Citizen Kane, but I found it dull and uninteresting. I understood what it was about, and what people liked about it, I just didn't really care for it. And while I found Bastion was some fun, it neither felt particularly innovative nor interesting. Neither the story nor the characters were prominent or well-crafted enough for me to care about them, leaving only the gameplay, which never really changed and wasn't particularly innovative. It was a bit of fun, I guess, but I won't be playing it again for a LONG time. That said, I get that's just me, glad you like it and all.

But ltimately what those opinions come down to is my breaking down these things into what they did or didn't do, and how they did them. Then I assign those things values based on my personal tastes and make a judgement. It comes down to those personal tastes - someone else will hate something I loved, just based on their personal tastes - which is fine by me, as long as those personal tastes aren't things I find seriously wrong (racism, for example). For instance, I don't have a huge problem with glitches or bugs in a game - as such, I thoroughly enjoy many of Obsidian's 'flawed' creations, because I don't really care about those things. Other people do, and hate them - and I get that.

I think it's fine to argue with critics if they say a thing was done and it wasn't, or it was done a certain way when it was done another way - there are objective facts that can enter into a review. Sometimes it's even okay to argue with a value that someone has that seems out of the blue, or to entail other likes or dislikes that seem crazy. But you're right in pointing out that some people don't realize that the 'goodness' or 'badness' of something is often, particularly in themselves, based on subjective values that have little relevance to others.

-Maybe I think Yahtzee is pants-on-head stupid, ill-informed and talks way to fast (and his "official" fanboys gargle my salty balls).
But if you're offended, then the reason we hate you is not because of your choice in games online video game reviewers. We hate you because you're an entitled, spiteful dork with too much time to be angry.
-Maybe I think the phrase "too much time to be angry" doesn't make any sense here. I mean are they not angry before because they have too much time and when they lose all that delicious, wonderful time they become angry? Or when they waste that time watching videos or typing into forums on the internet it makes them angry? ...I don't understand. I'm not angry. Are you angry?

-Maybe internet video game critics can defend themselves.

-Maybe most Escapist Users are smarter than you are and have already figured this out. Who knows?

-Or maybe it doesn't matter to me and I can respect the opinions of others [sub]even if they are wrong[/sub]. But only if they make me laugh. If I fail to laugh they have failed as an internet video game reviewer!

-Maybe even Yahtzee's Escapist profile reads Professional Troll and he's laughing off his ass right now. But who really knows for sure?

Some critics never give any qualifiers about why they do or don't like something, but Yahtzee always ALWAYS gives reasons. He doesn't just shoot things down, he explains why they're bad (or at least why he doesn't like them). That puts him a big step above most critics in my book, especially music critics.

We Don't take kindly to people who stir up trouble in these parts. Now apologize and tell everyone that you think Citizen Kane and Bastion are masterpieces and works of art. Right now dammit!

I mainly just watch them for the laughs. Secondly to hear his views on a particular title.

I find the descriptions of specific things in-game hilarious and it never fails to make my ribs ache, whether I have heard of or played the title regardless. Even if it's a review of a game I loved, like some of them are, it makes no difference to me. And let's face it, the majority of the time he's bloody right as well! xD

Just because someone else doesn't like something that you may like, doesn't mean you should cave their head in with the nearest blunt object, does it? Didn't think so. Just let it go, lol. It wasn't aimed at anybody.

Fanboys, huh?

*Shrugs*

And on that note, I spy a couple I haven't watched yet! Toodle-pip!

My apologies, people of the world. I do her publicly affirm that Citizen Kane and Bastion are masterpieces and works of art before which the likes of Rock'n'Roll and Pablo Picasso pale in comparison.

Which is to say, at least Citizen Kane and Bastion are tolerable, unlike Rock'n'Roll or Pablo Picasso :).

And that guy doesn't look like he's holding that shotgun right - the stock looks like it's right in front of his face. Ouchie.

That is a very good point except I do have to correct one thing.
Yahtzee is not a critic. Never has been. Never will be.
He is nothing more than a comedian with a schtick.[footnote]Which he basically stole from Angry Videogame Nerd but thats beside the point.[/footnote]
He has said before that people do not like it when he points out positive things about games so he only focuses on, and makes up, negative things to say because that is his act and that is what he is paid to do.

Oh, how saddening it is to see people getting so flustered over those videos. I don't know about everyone else here, but one lesson I've learned the hard way is that being staunchly defensive never helps your case. Being defensive tells people that you're not comfortable liking what you like, or at least shows a sign of insecurity.

The bast way to be is to be indifferent. What you like is what you like, and all other opinions be damned. In Yahtzee's case, his opinions are often valid, if not pretty hyperbolic, but are entirely his own. The best part about it though, and I'm going to cap this so I can convey my context properly, is that YAHTZEE DOES NOT GIVE ONE FUCK ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK. He understands that his opinion is most likely going to be vastly different and disagreed with. That doesn't make him change his thoughts or constantly run to defend his position on the forums. He consistently holds to his opinion by not caring one bit about what you or anyone else thinks, and everyone else should do the same in turn.

Just as Yahtzee doesn't care about your opinion, you shouldn't care about his or anyone else's.

I think most people don't know what a critic actually is. A critic isn't there to tell you, what you're supposed to like. He's not even there to tell you if somethin is good or bad. He's there to tell you if he _thinks_ it's good or bad and what he liked and didn't like about something. That what Yahtzee does, that's what MovieBob does and that's what Roger Ebert does! Yahtzee opinion on a game is just as valid as anyone elses opinion on a game, the only difference is, that he makes funny videos to express his opinion.
