I dont think that Characters are dissapearing as much as not being focused upon in the more popular games out there. Rockstar Bioware CD Projekt Red, some indi and Ubisoft games still make really good characters. I downright cried at
Even though bioware seems to have archetype molds for certain characters ie. Canderous, Wrex, Sten. Sometimes when they break out of that you have some really great characters that emerge. Mordin's Death in ME 3 who was a very well rounded and written character and there always seemed to be more about him to discover.
The Witcher series is the same way and it took me forever to decide on certain plot decisions because it would ususly lead to abandoning one or the other really great people.
All and all, I think you have either been looking at the wrong places or your standards are too high.
