All i can say is I think gaming companies are trading long play time for graphics.
Why is it that alot of new games coming out have a 'Story' with a play time of around 5-10hrs.

However i cant wait for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3
I do completely agree here, games are getting shorter and/or easier.. Which is depressing in it's own right. I was just getting in to Gears 2 when it decided to cut and run, I think people put to much stock in the idea that there games will be a "Trilogy"

Halo 3 - Get home after buying it, 5hrs later i get back up cos im done
Gears 1 and 2 - 1 took about 5hrs and 2 took a little longer
Fallout 3 - Completed the main story, no side missions, in less than 5hrs

I miss the old days when it took you weeks to finish games because they were so bloody hard or they were just long. I miss my old Sega Master System, Alex the Kidd was impossible because you couldnt save... but at least you became pro at the first 5 levels and the same with R-Type

I understand what you mean about dissillusionment. I grew up in the time of colourful platformers with heaps of backstory. I have fond memories of Xargon, a platformer where you were an archeologist called Malvaneus Havershim, trapped in another dimension who collected emeralds, fired laser bullets for no apprent reason, could also throw fireballs and rocks, picked up candy and stuff for points, and in between each level you'd look at his journal, and see just what he was thinking about the world he'd been plunged into. And every time you died, you'd hear Xargon's maniacal laughter. These days, we have brown and grey worlds full of space marines. Whoopdy f*ck.

I feel the same. Sometimes when I look at upcoming games I despair for gaming.

Then I go back to my handheld and I feel a lot better again. Generally I find handheld games a lot more satisfying.

For example I played quite a few rpg's last year but one of the best I came across was The World Ends With You. It was original and innovative and surprisingly it was a lot more interesting than some of the home console rpg's out.
The DS has become the go-to place for RPGs...and it works.

I was falling into the lull myself. But then Burnout Paradise was ported to PC. I'm happy for another couple of months now at least ^^

Maybe its your mind telling you not to spend so much time gaming, and go out live life a little?
Maybe go on a holiday or something..
And you're saying this while on a gaming forum...mhm
Anyway, I haven't noticed it, I love Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3, and have no real complaints about any other games besides CoD: WaW

I have experienced this kind of slum in my gaming, but no matter how many, disappointments come out, there are always the excellent and freaking amazing that gets me back on the horse, like Gears of war 2. And there are games that tend to grow on me as I played them like Fallout 3, at first I was turned of by it, and went back to playing online shooters like cod4, and later cod:waw which was a bit disappointing, but a lots of fun to campaign with friends on multiplayer, but as I played fallout 3 it got better and it is really fun, so lets remember on thing my fellow escapies, we are games, are thirst for the best and the greatest game is infinite, we will never stop and we will never give up hope, for as long as there are strong developer, there will be games, and we will be there to play them.

'injokes and fanwankery' would be a terrible fate for my most favourite of past times

Long-lasting games have always been where the PC shines. For less than the price of one new AAA on a console you could easily ebay/download/abandonware/pirate/emulate a swarm of really fantastic games for the PC. Not to mention free/shareware and open source projects, user created levels and mods, total conversions...

Some great games you can play a billion times because of fundamentally excellent gameplay- but some great games you may only play once because most of the interest is in the plot.

Yes I know the feeling, I blaim the lack of balance between "awesome" and "fun". Nowadays, games take themselfs indeed more seriously, that's ofcourse not a problem. Not all books are as funny as Terry Pratchett and not all movies are light-hearted comedy's, it's the same with games. But I feel that I've got too much seriousness in games now, and not enough light-hearted fun. That's why I miss a Wii, that console offers a lot more light hearted fun then my 360. I would really like to balance those 2, luckely I've got the DS from my little sister (with an R4 card ofcourse, woohoo) to stop me from completely going anti-game ;)

I used to play games 6-8 hours a day back when I was younger but nowdays I'm so occupied with school, work, women (no way in this particular order or priority) and all kidns of things I cannot simple have enough time to play games.

Also, my attention span for the newest kinds of games has been significantly reduced.
I have this huge pile of games that I haven't beaten yet that I will some time deal with (Bioshock being one)

Holy crap, I'm not the only one who's played that game? If I remember correctly, he shot lasers out of his chest. FEAR THE NIPPLE LASERS!

As for my declining interest in gaming, It's not from a lack of good games to play. Street Fighter 4 will be out for PC long before I ever get bored of Rock Band 2, or Devil May Cry 3, and I still like to replay a game from the Mega Man X Collection every now and then. Sometimes when I'm at the computer with nothing else to do, I'll just aimlessly browse forums/facebook while listening to music, instead of playing a game.

Then again, I'd rather have a good, interesting, 10 minute conversation with one of my friends than have a few matches of Brawl with them.

i know what you mean.
enjoyed a few of the wii games, but apart from that, the current console generation has done nothing for me.
i still don't understand the appeal of the PS3.

Well, I will say that it's been a long, LONG time since i've been able to play a game for more than a 3 hour sitting. I don't nesassarily think that's a bad thing though. I've just got better things to do...like chatting to a load of strangers on the internet...

Been playing for 14 years now I feel a lot of games nowadays are shorter and easier than they were years ago(both probably go hand in hand).

I find a lot of new games don't do it for me and aren't that good although some are brilliant and that is what keeps me coming back.

More and more though I find myself reliant on the social aspect of multiplayer though since most singleplayers are short and/or not much replay value.

I mean I still play stuff like Crash Bandicoot and Megaman from time to time.

I get what you mean. I briefly played WoW, and each time I played it, I didn't quite feel right, as if I should have been doing something else with my time.
