Now I live in Australia and don't know anything about the deep south besides the storys I have heard. The storys paint a picture of backwood swamps, filled with voodoo preists and inbread rednecks. I take all these storys with a lot of salt, but I really don't know if they are true or not. So I was wondering if any of you guys come from the deep south, or know somthing about it? Can you please tell me if the storys I hear are true. Thank you.

Yes, its one big swamp, where rednecks defend their properties with their lives and voodoo priests prowl the night.

In all seriousness, of course theyre not true. Just read what i just said and compare it to those and theyre no different, except that mine sounds true - yes, that was not a typo.

It's like any other stereotype. There is a grain of truth to it, unfortunately; people like that are out there. But the vast (and I do mean vast) majority of people in the deep south are like people all over the rest of the country. Some country, some city, but largely normal. :p

I grew up a little in Louisiana. there was alot of swamps but the people were no less civilized or polite. In fact people there were more polite than people ive seen up north in places like Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Now I still live in the south but North Carolina is at the very top of it.

My mom's from rural Texas (not sure how deep that is in the South), and it's a slower pace of life, but the folks tend to be lovely. I just don't discuss religion or politics with my relatives down there; instead, I just stuff myself with tasty fried food.

There are some really stupid redneck kinda people in the south, but less than is foretold.

Actually, the majority of them are in West Virginia (which isn't even that south) and are mountain people, not swamp people.

There is a grain of truth to the stereotypes - the Deep South has the worst education level in the US, plenty of swamps and meandering rivers, lots of poverty, and a distinctive accent. If you're looking to have a run-in with voodoo priests while you steamboat down the river, go back to reading Mark Twain novels; it's not THAT different from the rest of the civilized world.

According to my extensive research, (Deliverance and Fallout 3) The South is filled with angry rednecks who shoot wildlife and trespassers with gusto, while occasionally chopping people to death with a fire axe.

This also happens.

It all depends on what you mean by "deep south" because every state is different. Swamps? That's going to be Louisiana and I'm sure you find some voodoo folks there running trinket shops for tourists. As far as rednecks, don't let the stereotype fool you. Rednecks are all over the country. Not just in the south.

Hell, with a few exceptions, pretty much all the southern states have their own distinct accents. All in all, we're regular folks with our own quirks and we're friendly to those that aren't pricks.

And never forget, Texas gave the world the microchip.

Its more an image that the Elite Snobs project on areas they deem inferior to their own existance.

Think of rival sports teams. the fans of the team you dont like are XYZ for liking said team, regardless of the truth.

I think the schools in Florida were pretty bad. I don't actually remember being pelted with rocks and sticks by other kids, but apparently the school's inability to do anything about it is why I was actually pulled out of school for a while. Not long after, we moved to West Viginia. Still plenty of assholes, (as is the case most anywhere there are people) but here they're kept in line a bit better... What does it say about the area that some of the schools around here have police patrolling the halls?

There will be racists and inbreds and voodoo priests there. It's not as if stereotypes get made up off of absolutely no evidence, so there must be a few of those. However, having lightly visited there before, I actually found none of those. I've seen more rednecks with even fewer teeth in western massachusetts (the place with all the colleges and hospitals and research and stuff).
