After owning an Xbox and Xbox 360 I've decided to buy a PS4 for this generation. The blueness of everything is going to take some getting used to though.

Traitor!!

But seriously, what is this discussion about? Why did you switch? Or did you want to ask others if and why they switched?

You might want to ask some questions to get the thread rolling, otherwise the mods will lock it (or bring out the wheel of torment) since right now it's just a statement with little discussion value.

I'm not certain what we're supposed to talk about here so I'll say that I am considering the same switch. I was a Sony guy for the PS1 and a Sony guy for the PS2 (though I owned a Xbox). I became a Microsoft guy with the 360 (though I owned a PS3). Now I get to that same cross roads as usual and I have zero idea which way I'll turn.

Neither system really has anything I want as of right now (and no, possible releases mean nothing to me since they are nothing but potential until we actually have the game and if I wanted to gamble, I'd go to the race track). Sony currently has the edge for me since their online service actually gives you something rather than Microsoft who just kind of kicks you whatever bargain basement game they found lying around but right now, neither have convinced me to invest.

Hell, there's a chance that I'll....*SIGH....go PC. That's the least likely choice but unlike years past, it's a choice that I am open to this generation as neither consoles have done anything to impress me.

Well, I just signed up to move in with a guy who owns all the consoles that I do not. I am a Playstation and Nintendo guy, he went full Xbox.

I can only say there are some interesting times ahead, I'll be finally able to judge for myself.

I personally find Xbox green kind of gross, even though green is my favorite color. They just use such bad greens.

On the other hand, PlayStation blue has a cool, nice feeling to it. Much better color choice.

But if you want really good color, go play Pikmin 3.

PC is a very strong choice depending on your gaming habits. The main thing to know is that you are making an investment of both time and money for a bigger pay off down the road. That investment wont be worth it unless you take advantage of what a PC offers.

Having been both a PC and console gamer for the entirety of the time I've bought and played games, I gotta say I never understood the sentiment that you should have to choose between console OR PC, or that being a PC gamer requires an "investment" of money. Of course, without investment you're compromising on graphical fidelity, but after years of gaming on a mediocre PC you come to terms with what kind of performance you expect from your machine.

Even though there's a lot of overlap the kinds of games I buy a console for are routinely different from the ones I play on PC. And despite having played games on Windows for the better part of my life I've never owned a top-of-the-line desktop, either. High-spec is nice but any computer worth its weight should be able to run a good swath of games these days. If you spend the amount of money on a gaming PC that you would on a brand-new console, you don't really lose that much in terms of raw technical power. And if you aren't willing to spend that amount of money on a new computer, you could spend a little to upgrade the one you're already using while using the rest to buy a console. That deals with the library overlap, too, since you won't have to worry about specs on a console. Otherwise, you can seriously just run most major releases on low-medium settings even on decent, moderately-priced non-budget laptops with dedicated graphics chips (although you're always better off gaming on a desktop). Anybody with a PC can be a "PC gamer".

I guess this might also be helped by the fact that I am traditionally a late adopter with consoles, and by the time I want to play the games everyone's talking about they've dropped to 40% of their launch price. Really, if you're thrifty about when and from where you buy your games from you can have a surprising amount left over. Getting a PC is more costly up-front but considering you aren't paying a subscription fee to connect to PSN/XBL, you end up saving more in the long run anyway. In this day and age the idea that PC gaming is more expensive than console gaming should be considered a myth.

If you DO decide to go PC this time around, I would suggest trying your best to avoid getting too comfortable with Steam. It's a great service with great deals but you're better off not locking yourself into the system if for whatever reason you regret it later. It's a bit too convenient sometimes, and when you stop to think it can be a little frightening to realize you don't really own your library. That's one reason to stick with physical releases on consoles.

The investment is not just in hardware. You have to learn quite a bit, and for an optimal PC gaming experience you need to keep on learning pretty much forever. That is invested time. And PC gaming is more expensive up front than console, there is no doubt about that. Even a cheap gaming PC is more than a console.

This is what I mean by investment - the costs are undeniably higher, at least in the short term, for PC gaming. Those higher costs pay off big time though if you take advantage of the PCs unique features.

I was capturing that strange feeling of treachery that I felt while switching brand and recording that feeling via a post on an internet forum. It might not lead to a long discussion, but then not every thread is destined to reach double digits.

Sorry, if I came off as rude. (The traitor thing was a joke.) I just didn't want a fellow forum user getting his thread locked just because, to me, it didn't seem to have a clear direction to go, and that it might incur the mod wrath. Now that I have a good sense of what to talk about, I'll add some on topic words:

No one should feel like they are a traitor to a brand. The brands should be aware of the possibility of betraying their customers. *cough* online DRM such as Sim City 2013, pre-release Xbone, lots of Ubi titles *cough*

I, myself, have decided not to get anything beyond a Wii U this generation, until some major price drops happen. I was overall disappointed in all three consoles I owned from last gen, and this gen doesn't look like it's worth investing about $400 per box, either. I'm gonna wait, while playing what my aging PC can run (which is sadly a lot), some last gen thing I'm catching up on, and interesting Wii U things. The Wii U doesn't even have much that interests me, but it at least does have a few things.

My reply was probably a bit sarcastic, but in hindsight this thread does feel a bit pointless.

My 360 is a bit temperamental these days when it comes to playing discs, so I figured it was time to upgrade. I went for a PS4 since it seemed like a better bet for indie games and exclusives.
