I say 'The Godfather' is the definitive mob movie. And I think that 'Unforgiven' is the (or one of the) definitive Western movie.

I nominate Forest Gump as the definitive movie about EVERYTHING.
if by 'everything' you only mean United States history from the 50's onwards you might have something there.

Some people seem to be confusing 'definitive' with 'best'. I know it can be blurry since a movie can be both, but one does not make it the other.

For example, Saving Private Ryan is a lot of people's favourite WW2 film. That's fine and everything, but to say it is a definitive depiction of WW2 is a bit much considering the whole war was fought all over the world by many nations, and not only did SPR only show a very small part of it, but in an operation in which several nationalities took part, only one was shown. Come to think of it, the only inclination it gives that any other Allied force even exists is by dissing a foreign commander. As a movie that's fine, but that also makes it a small squad film, not one about the whole war. If anything, Saving Private Ryan is probably the definitive Omaha Beach movie... though I'm not even sure about that- might need to watch The Longest Day again first.

On the other side is something like, say... Waterworld. A lot might think it's a bad film, but it's hard to argue that there is a more definitive portrayal of a post apocalyptic ocean world.

See what I'm getting at? Definitive does not always just mean 'best'

Definitive space movie: Probably 2001 although Star Wars, Star Trek 2, and Alien come close.
Definitive underwater movie: Tough not to say The Abyss.
Definitive "hollywood" movie: Armageddon, which is unfortunately also the definitive "shit goes boom" movie despite heavy competition.

I nominate Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as the definitive non-linear time movie.
I don't know about that one; Pulp Fiction and Memento are a tad more definitive.

I nominate 'Army of Darknes' as the best humerous fantasy movie.

'2001' as the best movie about the meaning of life, followed closely by 'The meaning of life' (fishy fishy fishy).

The Sindbad series of Harryhausen as the best mythological movies.

'The Crimson Pirate' as the best pirate movie.

Yea, I think Memento was far more definitive than Eternal Sunshine.

He does have a point there, Thaius.

Also 'Stand by Me' as the definitive coming of age story. Though call me crazy but I've always liked 'Now and Then' just a little bit better...

I am going to re-nominate Eteranl Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but this time as the definitive Jim Carrey Movie.

I nominate Apocalypse Now (although Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are close) as the definitive Vietnam War movie.

And since I'm a huge fan of the movie, I nominate Dr. Strangelove as the definitive Cold War movie.

Is it too soon to call 'Black Dynamite' the definitive blaxploitation film? Or is it still Shaft?

I nominate Schindler's List as the ultimate depressing film, but that could be argued toward The Green Mile too...

I nominate Galaxy of Terror as the best "Woman gets raped by a giant worm" Movie.
I can nominate a lot of hentai that is more definitive than that
I was talking about life action movies, I (sadly) know that there is a lot of sick hentai out there that could easily top that.

Surely either Night or Dawn of the Dead are already far closer to that than a WWZ movie ever could be?
