It was fun, and rather unlucky. There were some good ideas that it brought to the table but it was brought at the wrong time.

Dreamcast could play copied games and had no protection. Therefore nobody would develop for it. It died right around when cd burners became popular.

It was ahead of its time quite frankly. Sega knew where the market were heading and tried to jump the gun but people were happy with the Playstation. Aside from some top titles the Dreamcast just didnt have the volume of software to compete with the Playstation. Not to mention companies like Eidos and Activsion ported Playstation games to the Dreamcast with little or no visual improvement. When the Playstation 2 arrived it actually offered the step up that Dreamcast already did but thanks to titles like Tekken Tag Tournament and Ridge Racer V not to mention third party titles like Timesplitters along with excellent marketing customers abandoned the Dreamcast.

But its still one of my favourite machines and some games I still play today like MSR and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. If Sega had not so Epic Failed as they did with the Saturn the Dreamcast may have had a better chance. As it was it was an all or nothing bet for Sega and it failed.

The Dreamcast definitely wasn't rubbish. Out of the two choices you've given, I'd have to go with unlucky. It had some spectacular games, and so much potential. It probably would have kick-started internet capability much earlier if it didn't flop. A shame that it didn't hold up. It's a great console. :(

I love my Dreamcast, I still play it every now and then.
My fave games were Evolution, Jet Set Radio, Power Stone 2 & Sonic Adventures 1+2 (partly due to I didn't have many games)
It is a shame that it didn't do so well as I would have gladly loved to see another console in the Sega line, but sadly that won't be.

Oh and for the record, I do also own a PS2 so I'm not being biased, I just don't play the PS2 any more since I got the Wii as the 3rd Kingdom Hearts isn't coming out on the PS2 :(

I thought the dreamcast was brilliant. But unlucky in the sense that it was first and sega showed it's cards too soon. It just got outplayed by sony. Though there were some true gems on that system and some damn good memories gaming with friends on it. Miss you <3

*sigh* skies of arcadia...

I thought the Dreamcast was great!! They had the Best Space Flight/combat games. I think Sega's timing was off for the launch of dreamcast. I had heard they rushed production and because of this it got a bad rap early on because of the problems people had with them. Also when it was released on-line gaming was still in its infancy. Video games were for game systems, On-line games were for computers.
The funny thing is you see the same thing happening today with PlayStation and XBox. Both are trying so hard to get the next generation console out there and look what happens...

Unlucky is all.

Pretty much unlucky. Look at Atari, the Jaguar system was way better than the other systems out yet still flopped. Advertisement plays a big part, along with unit cost, and I think both systems fail on theses parts

I'm glad there's some fondness for the dreamcast out there. I still like it. I occasionally play jet set radio and shenmue. Both are up there as some of my favourite games (though I'm not really sure why I like shenmue so much).

I suppose the dreamcast also came after the Sega Saturn, which I remember as a mess of a console nowhere near as good as the ps one. Not easy to recover a fanbase. And I also seem to remember that Sega thought that having the Arsenal football squad as their main way of advertising was going to be enough against Sony. Not a great move.

The dreamcast was awesome. Its was last console I fell in love with. It was ahead of its time offering 4 controllers and online play. It might have been ditched by some publishers but it had some amazimg titles.

It was not rubbish, in any sense of the word, or unlucky. SEGA just mismanaged the business. Such a pity.

I think I'm glad sega stopped at the dreamcast, better to go out on a high note than just go bankrupt and not even be able to develop anymore (not that i can recall anything they've released setting the world on fire but its nice to know they're still trying with sonic).

I actually played Shenmue over the 2008 christmas period since I'd already done all the games that were considered christmas releases.

can't beat shenmue.

The Dreamcast was fantastic and has some of the greatest games of the last Gen. Unfortunately Nintendo killed Sega and the PS2 killed Nintendo.
Granted, the Wii is printing money on the sidelines and given how long it's been since I played with mine I really have to wonder how it's still doing so well. But that's flamebait for another thread.

I'm waiting for the day I see a Dreamcast and a copy of Jet Set Radio in the preowned section of a gaming shop. I may well die.

I also have to go with the unlucky. One of my friends has one and a game collection of about 50+ games to go with it. While a lot of those games are garbage, there were quite a few gems.

Unfortunatly Sega was always a bit too hasty and had bad marketing.

Game Gear - Functionality wise far superior to the game boy at the time. 30 minute battery life with 6AA's... Oops.
Sega CD - First console/attachment to really go with CD's. Too early not enough support.
Dream Cast - Too early, if they spent a few more months on development and shoved it out at a better time it would have lasted longer.

Sega's hardware was always ahead of it's time, but with bad marketing their hardware just did not have the holding time that it needed to be truly successful.
