The DSi is a rushed half-assed, desperatly and poorly executed job.

I guess I'm really behind on the times (or may I'm just more of a xbox and sony guy) but let me get this straight -- the new DSi will not be able to play any of the old games that you currently own? So if you buy this piece of crap, you have to RE-BUY all of your old games via DSi download store just so that you can keep playing it!? Thats.. really.. messed... up...
You are not behind on the times, you are just misinformed. I could see how you would believe nintendo would do that though.....you are used to it being a sony guy and all.
I have a PS3 which can play PS2 games and that can play PSone games so what's your point again?
My point is the post was incorrect. And enjoy the pspgo!

yes it is. why would anyone buy the DSi when the original one is clearly better, allows you to play advance games, and doesn't have a shit camera/audio thing...

Bah, Nintendo is hardly what I would call a mutlimedia company, and that actually worries me. But I guarantee you that if the PSP wasn't as big of a success (that none of you give credit for) as it was, the DSi would have come alot later.

Which I suppose that's a good thing for some people...

Thanks for telling me what I already knew, although I didn't know that its shittyness was on such a high level. All the more reason to hate it.

I might be in the minority here, but I have a DSi and I like it. Granted, I don't care at all about the camera or music editing crap. I replaced a DS phat that died on me about a month before the DSi came out. Main reason I got it over the DS lite was for the bigger screen. True, I can't play GBA games on it, but I have my wife's DS phat for that. (I only have a couple GBA games anyway that I almost never play)

One thing I didn't like was the fact they changed the charger plug style on the DSi. But overall I like it more than my old DS phat, the bigger screen is way better than the one on the phat.

Juding the Nintendo DSi on its own merits, after trying it out I can clearly say that the DSi is nothing more than what the topic describes.
It is pretty much widely known that the DSi has a pathetic webcamera, (0.3 Megapixels 640x480) significantly reduced battery life and no GBA slot. I will however not judge it by those flaws when there's apparently so many other significant design flaws that clearly makes the DSi stand out as a rushed product.

Here are my short but very significant list of complaints for you people.
These are features that are so lackluster thatt they are unacceptable by any standards.

Weak Multimedia capabilities

You would think that Nintendo would thought of putting a heavy emphesis on connectivity with the much upgraded browser and NDS Shop.
When editing Photos or Audio clips on your DSi, if you wish to send, share or copy the clips/pictures there is no way you can send the files through WiFi to anyother DSi nor a computer nor the Internet. The only way you can get the photos or audio clips out is if you save those to the SD-card, take the card out, walk to your computer, insert the SD-card in your computer and copy the files to your harddrive. Hello? This is the 21st century! There's FaceBook, Flickr, Google PICASA, ACD See and other WAY MORE EFFICIENT ways of sharing pictures and audioclips. Why the heck can't the DSi share these things online without having to fiddle with the SD-card and a computer? It makes you virtually dependable on a SD-card reader and a whole computer to do something as easy as sharing what you create on the DSi.

Oh, but don't worry, you're not missing anything. The picture editing tool is something you will grow tired of in 2 minutes and the the Audio editing Tool is so vastly crippled that you'll have more fun with the Windows Audio Recording Tool.
The DSi Audio Tool lets you record an audioclip for 10 seconds regardless of the size of the SD-card you have.

Non-sharable Nintendo accounts?

When purchasing applications and games on the Nintendo DS Shop, you're spending Nintendo Points; much like of the Nintendo Wii Shop. However the points are not interchangable.
You will have to have two seperate accounts, one for the Wii and one for the Nintendo DS.
This is essentially retarded. Both the Wii and the DS have been out for 3-4 years are there is still no connectivity between them. Why in Gods name didn't they get their brains out of their rectums and realized that the Nintendo Point system could be designed for BOTH platforms.

The alleged (but non-existant!) WPA2 support

Ah, my by far biggest gripe with the DSi.
The Nintendo DSi now supports WPA2 Wireless Connection encryption.
The old Nintendo DS machines were only able to run the ANCIENT deprecated WEP encryption.
The majority of Wi-Fi connections out there use WPA and nobody with a brain would ever use WEP at home. Finally Nintendo updated the latest DS-model with WPA, but guess what it only works for browsing and the Nintendo DS Shop. If you want to play your NDS games Multiplayer wirelessly you still have to resort to using WEP making the entire WPA-support entirely and utterly pointless What the COCK were they thinking? What is the whole point of adding WPA support to the DSi if all the games still use WEP?!

Lack of GBA slot adds more problems

Thanks to Nintendo removing the GBA-slot, I cannot any longer have Force Feedback on my Nintendo DS - yes, the NDS has Rumble Pack! An Officially Licensed and Approved by Nintendo product that was launched with Metroid Prime Pinball and is supported by multiple games.

You want to use this with your DSi? Well screw you!

Oh, and if you want to play any of the Guitar Hero games on the NDS, you are officially screwed as well since the Guitar Hero Controller goes into the GBA slot!

These obvious design flaws makes the DSi in my humble opinion stand out as nothing more than a half-assed rushed job. The DSi consists mainly of old outdated features and ideas that are poorly executed. Can a Firmware update fix these issues? I do not think so.
I will NOT be purchasing a DSi anytime soon.

On an unrelated note:
Here in Europe, the videogame industry has been known to severly screw over the consumer more than in any other part of the world. In my opinion, the DSi overpriced for what it is concidering it is inferior to the Nintendo DS Lite but not only that; here in Sweden it is impossible to find a store that trades in DS Lites for the DSi so if you want one, you better cough up 220? for it.
I agree but consumers now adays are so trend happy it dose not have to be qaulity made to sell like hot cakes, the ipod is the testament to that its at least over priced by 80%.

Well, the DSi will still sell well because sadly Nintendo's fanbase is full of idiots.

The DSi, as I've said before, is worthless compared to the DS, and I'd rather have a PSP than get one.

I apologize if someone's somehow offended, but the DSi is something I know I won't be buying.

The good people at Nintendo are whores.

If you can't see the pattern, its your fault.

Nintendo is a company for soccer moms and kids. I don't need blood and tits for an enjoyable experience, what I do need is a decent console, with decent games, with a decent control scheme that won't give me wank wrist and will actually realize what i'm trying to do when I perform an action.

It looked like it sucked. Nothing new enough to warrant a purchase, and all of the new stuff has been done better on other gadgets.

That is why when the DSi came out, I bought a DS Lite. I love it, wouldn't trade it for anything. Great games on it, and I love being able to play GBA games. Fail on Nintendo's part for that. That was the deciding factor for me.

I can't be the only one who has figured this out. Deliberately using obsolete technology is the secret to Nintendo's success! The PS3 used the most powerful hardware and suffered for it because it costs more, weighs more and is harder to program for.

You're preaching to the choir, sir. Why don't you go to another forum where Nintendo hate isn't a dominant gene?

Don't buy it then, it's purely optional you know.
You know, the OP was just trying to share his opinion with us. He even said that he's not going to buy it.
Wait, he's ranting about a handheld he doesn't even own? I can't help but cry foul for that...

I still have a DS fhat, I think it's brilliant and have no desire to replace it (classic grey with the back of the top screen dark blue
( I tried to replace the grey cas with a blue one wich ruined it. I think it was one of the ribbon cables was damaged. Then I dropped my second DS(which was actually my mothers, that she stole from lost property at school) then giving the two broken DS's to a mate at school who turned it into the above mentioned DS))
Any I digres the DS fhat is brill
Ah the DS fhat, I too still have my red fhat and I feel no need for a new DS. Sure its bulky, chunky and heavy. But thats the way I like it!!

Thats how it's been for EVERY console. The most powerful one always seems to be the most unsuccessful while the technologically inferior console just owns. SNES Vs Genesis, N64 Vs PS1, Xbox Vs PS2 ect..it's like some unwritten rule or something.

I really wish people would stop bitching about the DSi's incapability of playing GBA games.

First off, if you already own a previous DS model WHY are you buying another one!? (unless your previous broke). I never understood why some people will buy the same device more than once simply because of a few extra totally unnecessary bells and whistles.

Secondly, if you had GBA games chances are you had a GBA so just play the damn games on that!!

Thirdly, the DSi is most likely targeted towards people who DON'T ALREADY HAVE A DS. Honestly how many people who are new to the DS are gonna be interested in GBA games or the lack of that backwards computability? Most of them really wont give a shit considering the DS itself has a substantial library.

I can see how the DSi seems like a ripoff to people WHO ALREADY OWN A DS, but to new customers it's still a good enough system. I'm not too fond of the DSi myself and it does seem like a scam in some ways but people really have to just take a step back and actually think a little more critically about this. Seriously, people shouldn't raise hell over something so insignificant to them.

I agree with the OP.

I love Nintendo handhelds, having owned every Gameboy (excluding the micro), up to the DS Lite. The jump from DS Lite to DSi is a hard sell, particularly the rubbish with the cameras they have included. I've no doubt the removal of the GBA slot was made in the wake of mass piracy concerns.

I do, however, think the OP is taking it a little too far with the demands for Facebook and other online services integration. This is, after all, a sub $200 device who's first priority is to play games. What you SHOULD be able to do is send the photos to your Wii without the aid of an SD card.

Personally I would have avoided the camera integration all together unless it was of sufficient quality to warrant it in the first place. Unfortunately that would mean raising the price point which is so critical to Nintendo's success in the handheld market. Sadly these days, adding cameras seems to be the next logical step in design when hardware innovation has been exhausted (see: cellphones).

I was considering buying it because of the screen, but now I think I'll just grab a DS Lite.

On a side note, since the DS Lite supports WEP, is there a way to check what kind of wireless network I have?

EDIT: Nevermind, I have WPA2. Which means no online DS for me :(

The DSi is a piece of garbage. I like the shop channel but other then that it sucks. Nintendo needs to realize that they suck at multimedia and they suck at internet compatibility. Wi-fi for the Wii and DS is a pain in the ASS. And they should remember that a universal multimedia platform is something Sony tried with the PSP and failed. Nintendo needs to go back to doing what they do best, making games. They need to stop trying to keep up with all this new generation shit and just do what made them a success in the first place. It's shit like this that's going to be the death of Nintendo. I can see it coming.
