There are some pretty damn good reasons to not read a book, or watch a movie, or play a game. Maybe the story in this movie is bad, or this game is full of glitches, or something else.

However, sometimes our reasons for not doing it are just dumb, or illogical, or bizarre.

Take me, for example. There is this really niche anime called "Attack on Titan" (you probably never heard of it). It looks and sounds rad: action, monsters, cool scenes, interesting setting and a protagonist that not only has actual reasons to be angsty, but he also expresses his angst not with crying or self pity, but with a rage towards those who killed his mother.

However, I couldn't get to far into the series. Why, you ask? Well, take a look at this picture:
You see what they are wearing? Every time I look at their uniform, everytime my eyes look below their belt lines and I see their pants, all I can think is "They all are wearing grandma underwear". Don't even ask me why, because I have no slightest idea.

Tell me your dumb reasons.

I never played Goat Simulator, because a complete stranger at a Con I was at recommended it to me because he thought I "looked like the type of guy who'd love it"

and I was so fucking insulted and insecure about that, I couldn't play it! I won't let that random DBZ shirt clad dude dictate my life and personality! I mean what am I, some giggling stoner who lulz at meme games?!

All the examples I have of this are long forgotten, but I've had a number of times when I refused to watch a movie simply because I was put-off by the trailer music. Then again, when a trailer is accompanied by trashy club music, it's usually safe to assume that I'm not the target audience.

Refused to watch Scott Pilgrim vs. The World because I freaking hate Michael Cera with a passion. Don't care it was reportedly funny and looked decent.

Nearly the same with This is the End, but my girlfriend (now wife) said he dies horribly in it, so I changed my mind.

I really liked Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. I liked Starkiller's plot and the light-side ending was satisfying. It answers a question nobody asked but it was still really satisfying. Yeah, it had some dark spots but I really enjoyed Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It's too bad they didn't make another game in that series...it would have been great to see more games about Jedi and Sith who were just incredibly powerful and play through their lives. Force Unleashed would have been an amazing anthology series and is the kind of game where, IF they made a direct sequel, would have completely undermined the ending of the original. What would have been worse would have been if a direct sequel had tried to make a romance out of Juno Eclipse and Starkiller because in the original, they just didn't have the right kind of chemistry for anything more than just fair-weather friends. Making a direct sequel out of Force Unleashed with that kind of forced romance would have been an insult so severe I would probably block out that games existence from my conscious mind.

I love birds, especially tropical parrots. When I first heard about the film Rio I was incredibly excited! I couldn't wait until this movie came out so I could watch it and...and then the voice cast was announced...That completely killed it for me. The cast is just awful. George Lopez is one of those actors who I just can't watch unless he's doing stand-up. Anything else and I just get really pissed off until I change the channel or walk out of the movie.

I did not watch Cartoon Network for close to three years after they canceled 'Young Justice' yet renewed shit like 'Annoying Orange' and 'Johnny Test'.
I did not watch "How I Met Mother' because Bob Saget narrated and I refuse to watch anything that has Jerry Seinfeld in it at all (even as a voice actor).
Also, I cannot bring myself to watch 'Attack on Titan' because the Titans/monsters look severe mentally impaired/handicapped.
And finally I refuse to watch anything on the CW other than 'Penn and Teller's Fool Us' just because I am convinced that it will eventually devolve into another one of those goddamned 'very special episode' fucking teen dramas.

Have you ... ever seen grandma underwear? Granny pants refer to loose, high-waisted underwear like this:

Even old timey women's drawers were loose and puffy, like this:

Of course, as you've said, I'm sure you can't help but interpret them like that. But those pants look more like white skinny jeans or tights than anything that could recognisably be called grandma underwear.

It wasn't the only reason, but fear of a community full of actual conspiracy nuts was a major factor that kept me from picking up The Secret World.

Persona 4 Golden... Marie... I refuse to accept her as part of the [real] canon of Persona 4... I just can't...

Other than that, there was a time where I refused to watch FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood because I thought it would be seen as the "one true" FMA series... but, mostly because of Ling... I used to hate that guy... Now, it's ambivalent indifference... *shrugs*

I never played the first Mass Effect because of one negative review on Metacritic.

I was younger then, okay?

The my reason to never watch or read Attack on Titans is different from the op.
Reading the syonpis, it sounds it's "too violence for me". I can't really handle violence anime ever since I watched that ova Genocyber which pretty much trumatize me (it made me go pale). Ok yes my brother (who watched and loved it) told me that the anime gore is offscreen and it's censor compared to the manga. Also I'm hypocrite too as I watched the Berserk movies just fine including the final arc (and I admit I have seen clips of AoT).

Also I am put off from watching that Gate anime cos the syonpis remind me of the trope/ cliche I dubbe "one culture/ timeline clash with another culture/ timeline". Basically films like "Juungle to jungle" (that jungle boy in the city) and "Just visiting" (a knight time travel to the present) (what is the proper term to it?) always make me cring as if I shouting at the characters they are doing it wrong when they are in unfamilar setting they are accustome to!
Before you mention Bill and Ted Excellent Adventure, I can handle that as the focus point was Bill and Ted and it was funny too (same apply to Back to the Future triliogy).

Not sure if this counts because it doesn't really apply anymore, but for the longest time, I wouldn't watch any anime simply because I couldn't get over how ridiculous everyone's hairdos were.

For me the problem with Gate isn't in time travel, or the overpowerdness of modern military tech compared to medieval one, but how it handles our world and it's governments (i.e. every coutry is bad/evil/stupid, only Japan iz smart and honorable).

I railed against the Harry Potter series at one point in life for no other reason than having the misguided notion that a kids/young adult book series couldn't be worth my time.
Time has proven me wrong as I got sorted into Slytherin...

Er, Attack on Titan was very gory. If you don't like anime gore, stay clear of that.

IMHO, it wasn't gratuitous, though, mankind fighting a desperate war against monsters that are winning shouldn't be all fun and games for the soldiers.

I have 0 interest in The Witcher 3 because I think Geralt is ugly and boring.
I own the game, and I've played a bit of it. But I just can't get into it for that reason.

I find it kinda frustrating because I hear so much about how good the actual game is but I can't really get into it.
I'll probably get around to actually playing more of it at some point, but every time Geralt is on screen I'm bored.

It took me a very long time to start watching Firefly because the last 'new' space adventure I watched was that one with Kevin Sorbo (Andromeda) and I figured it would be just as campy.
I think I watched it 2~3 years ago despite the decade of praise I had kept hearing about it in whenever anyone talked about it.

I recently watched Godfather (the first of three?) and I can't say I was impressed with it. I'm not edger to watch the next two by any stretch. You hear things, you kind of learn about it in parodies and such, but so far I'm fairly disappointed.
