My only importance this coming week is my bro coming over to visit. Yeah I know people do care about this celebrations since there has been people asking for the Flag at the store I work in (we don't have any althought the Welsh store do sell them).

You do realize, that through the implementation of new laws and such, the Monarchy could be done away with without sacrificing any of the benefits? Or, we could replace the frightfully dull Windsors with some people who might do more to help out around the country. Or, we could perhaps get someone interesting. It's not like being a monarch is a difficult job, nowadays. I could probably do it, if I was asked politely.
Lets face reality here, if you removed the royal family the replacement wouldn't be someone interesting but yet another self serving gutless political moron. We would end with the choice between president Blair, Clegg or Osborne. Then you will add half dozen shady advisors who dine with dodgy businessmen in the hope of short term political gain. No French Republic has yet lasted longer than 60 years, compare that to British stability

I couldn't care less. The Golden Jubilee I gave flowers to the Queen personally, surely I don't need to care any more after that? =P

I should explain that the reason I gave flowers to the Queen was that our group was picked to go to this celebration thing when she came to Dundee as part of the 'Golden Jubilee Tour' and I was picked out of our group to give the Queen flowers, since I was the best behaved child (I think I was about 10 when this happened)

Oh yes let add those well known really useful Presidents, G.W Bush, B Assad, V Putin, R Mugabe and so and so forth. All them well known humanitarians and have done wonders for the country both home and abroad.

I'm going to a street party tomorrow where I used to live, I'm looking forward to it! Also I'm going to a street party today in the center of the village where I live now. As for my opinion on the royal family, I don't mind them at all. I love watching Russel Howard when he talks about them though.

And British Prime Ministers are innocent of this... how exactly? The presidential system doesn't make you evil you know. If you think the fact that they have presidential systems is the problem you're incredibly naive.

The same thing I do everyday, Pinky. Sitting in the dark and staring at my computer screen. =P

I've seen flags going up in some pubs, but I'm not that social, so I probably won't be doing anything for it.

I might bake a cake though, since I have an excuse now.

Hard for me to get excited for this when the royal family sent us Prince Charles last week on our own friggin dime. He should have stayed home.

Sadly, bugger all, as I have university exams all this week, starting on Monday. Yay for crappy scheduling! Enjoy your two days off if you get them!

Yeah but it helped us avoid President Blair.

I'm honestly on the fence about the whole thing, Yes hereditary power is a massive pile of balls but if you think that is done away with by not having aristocracy/royalty then I point you towards people like the Hilton's or the Murdoch's of Newscorp etc.

I don't like it but I also don't like the alternative much either.

I'm Irish so I would rather celebrate a successful Al-Qaeda assassination on the Royal family, then the Queen's birthday. God how much I hate them so.
I'd like to point out that this does not represent the opinion of most Irish people.

OP: I didn't even realise this was happening, I probably won't give to much though after I leave this thread, either. Nice for her, I guess. She's a cute little old lady.

Just to make it clear, that was hyperbole on my part, I don't want anyone to die in a terrorist attack.

President Blair wouldn't be much different to Prime Minister Blair in all honesty.

I understand hereditary power wouldn't be gone with the abolition of the monarchy, but why have hereditary power that doesn't need to be there?

I'm going to a pickernick, because I'm stupidly middle class. I'm slightly annoyed that both bank holidays are in my school holiday though, waste of two perfectly good days off. Other than that, I don't have a problem with the monarchy, it's a nice thing that sets us apart from France, Germany, Ireland, the USA and all the rest, but I'm not going to murder anyone who doesn't like them or anything.

I've just walked in to my house to find my mum's partner wearing a union jack baseball cap...

A small part of me just died.

Is he like part of the BNP now or something?

I hate seeing all this crap paraded around on TV, British food this and the traditional British way that... No-one gives a flying fuck any other day. I'm quite happy wearing my American boots, driving my german car, watching my Korean tv, listening to brazilian metal band playing inside a norwegian developed game on a Japanese console. Then I'll drink a belgian beer, eat some Chinese fast food and finally sleep in my swedish made bed... Just like every other Briton...

I'm in the gray area, I don't really have any problems with the Royal Family so I won't protest that this is being celebrated, but I know jack shit about them and what they do, so I won't be celebrating anything. I also live in the country side of Herefordshire with no shops of any kind around for miles and I'm homeschooled, so having the extra days just doesn't effect me in the slightest

Do the English generally not care about the Royal Family? I always found absurd the attention Royal family stuff gets in the US (you should see the attention it gets on CNN), but I thought at the very least the English probably cared.

Anyways, the only way the Diamond Jubilee affects me is that all the news here will be reporting about it instead of covering actual news.
The attitudes you see on this thread are partly down to the great British tradition of complaining about everything, and different places are behaving in different ways. In my street most people know each other to an extent and so almost every house has put flags up and we're planning an 8 hour street party, on the other hand there are other streets in the same town which have virtually nothing up and aren't doing anything. I myself am a proud monarchist but a lot of people, particularly younger ones going through a rebellious phase, tend to disagree.
