How does one go about getting the News Hound badge exactly? Is there a way for us normal yokels to contribute to the Escapist and get a badge for it?
I'm afraid not. That badge is primarely for the paid staff of the Escapist.
Okay, moving on- I've seen a few chess-like badges around lately, like 'Tactician' and such- what's that all about and how can I get involved?
Yep, these are the genre wars badges which started today. There's at least 10 different badges arleady. Go to your profile page and you'll see a tab called "Genre Wars". Go from there. If that isn't there then go to the main page and go on the Genre Wars link.

I've spotted a couple of Genre Wars badges that aren't up there;

Surrender Monkey: "Surrender Monkey!" - Presumably awarded for retreating from a battle.
Spartan: "This is SPARTA!" - Presumably awarded for defeated a foe with more troops, possibly without any losses.
Not 100% sure on the specifics, but I hope it'll do for now.

I don't think not losing any troops is part of the Spartan badge, I think it's just for going up against insurmountable odds.

Not only did I vote in every round, I also voted for and Turbine in every round, yet, no badge for me.

I = Sad.

Quite a few badges for one event (that probbly won't last for long)
No, Virgil said it wasn't going away. Which means his other statement about badges as 'currency' for something should start applying.

There was a pre-Mayhem poll in which you had to vote who you thought would be the winner. If you didn't vote in that initial poll, then it wouldn't matter if you had voted Turbine throughout the entire contest because we used that poll to hand out that particular badge :(

Ok. I'll try and work out what the odds have to be but if I can't, I'll just say what you just said.
