Zero Punctuation was the bait in the bear trap that got my leg.
I haven't had the willpower needed to gnaw it off and make my escape as of yet.

Also, there are people here who make interesting posts about a variety of topics which can often make interesting reading.
I've probably developed a kind of stockholme syndrome to be honest, but I'm used to it now so there you go.

I -barely- "stay" now, and it isn't any specific fault of the Escapist, but failings of the broader gaming site "culture" now. A culture, that has become fragmented and toxic; not just in the sense of differing opinions, but in a more rabidly polarizing "you're with us or against us" sort of way.

Whether it's being co-opted by political hacks or cheapened by its largest producers, there's always a story and someone with an axe to grind, and it doesn't matter how indefensibly stupid or pretentious the subject, there are loonies who will jump to its defense even when facts align to the contrary.

Or put more simply: Gaming sites are becoming less about games, and more about the baggage surrounding them.
Ergo, the less of that stupid "baggage" I have to deal with, the more I value a site. But speaking honestly, I only log in to occasionally chat with others via messaging and read the occasional cool article; most of my "net time" is spent elsewhere now, under a different alias.

For the Escapist, I will grant this much: I respect the site owners and (most of) its operators for at least acting like real people who are legitimately interested in the subjects they approach for reasons other than political pantomime.

And the mods. I'd be remiss if I didn't give the Escapist mod staff a shoutout here.
Call me a brown noser if you wish, but I think the moderation here is second to none in 16+ years of forum dwelling.

I've done moderation on other sites (long ago) and I'll admit it's not all that fun, nor is it easy to hit the right stride that promotes discussion without acting like a killjoy.

Worse, it's a thankless volunteer job (extremely few web positions like that are paid in any way), so when you get moderators that don't piss everyone (but a small clique) off or end up as a powerless joke, be sure to thank them because odds are good you won't encounter that terribly regularly.

This site is genuinely interesting, and entertaining. Occassionally, I get some news.

It's certainly a place I can voice my views on things no matter how useless it is in the long run.

Came for ZP, stayed for the forums.
When I initially joined, the forum seemed like an intelligent and varied group of people. The topics in Off-Topic discussions were fun and interesting.
I've considered leaving recently though since all the topics are fairly similar now, but keep coming back. I don't post as much as a used to, but that wasn't a lot anyway.

I made some friends here, but ultimately it was ZP that brought me here and probably ZP that will keep me here til it leaves. Already I hang out more with LRR's community because they're so much nicer all around. There's almost no toxic factor over there, whereas here there's a lot of people who knee-jerk in such negative fashion I wonder how they even enjoy their lives.
Not everyone, there are some good people here don't get me wrong. But LRR's community is much better overall. Why I stay here? Honestly its like a train-wreck... I don't want to watch it happen, but I'm compelled to anyway as horrifying as it can be at times.

Actually...why am I not on Neogaf instead? Oh yeah, it's because both are boring and I'm lagging behind a generation and gnawing on the few PS3 games that remain, like MSG Crossfire and Killzone 3! Honestly I even stopped watching ZP, although I do enjoy Let's Drown Out. I guess I'm here because I have a small presence with 5000 posts and it's a habit now. Even though every time I see a GG discussion thread I start hearing the call of the void.

ZP drew me to the site but some random forum topics are what got me to sign up to chat. Generally, I just like reading about what people have to say about random stuff... provided things stay relatively civil, which thankfully, they usually do.

ZP for the Orange Box was my first introduction to the site, but I wound up staying as a lurker for the news and some of the other videos. What actually got me to make an account (and cemented my being a regular) was my desire to do one of the polls.

I stick around now because I really like how the forums are run and it's still my go-to place for gaming news (and ZP, naturally). I also lean towards the pro end of the gamergate spectrum, so I've wound up liking this place more than I used to (they almost lost me a couple times over the years because of this and that). I do wish there were video reviews of games not just by Yahtzee, as I find some video footage of gameplay goes a long way for me and it's hard to sort through all of the shit on youtube.

ZP and gg. I was going to make an account years ago when ZP first came out, but I was just too lazy. It took the gamergate to finally motivate me actually join the forums, this being one of the few places that it could actually be discussed.

I used to be subscribed back when The Escapist was Escapist magazine and would semi-regularly publish neat gaming related articles which I would browse through whenever I had the chance. They still do that but not as often as it's clearly no longer really the focus of the site.

As for the forums? It's the only one left I pay any attention to. The ones I used to frequent all got shut down and I'm too lazy to seek out any new ones to browse. Too often they're either too angry and cynical for my tastes such as Rock Paper Shotgun's, or too specialized and too closely knit for my tastes like NMA or RPG Codex's forums.

As far as I have seen-

NO ONE has a excellent forum layout when compared on here (clear colours and layout, avatar image is just right and I can find where to click on and clicking on the last comment name take me to their post and NOT their profile!)

Active Mods for the most part and they enforce the rule all the time.

Fun topic that get me to comment (well used to be compared to when I first signed up).

Interesting video to read, article to read and review to read/ watch.

The site isn't dedicated to one thing only like a game or tv series therefore the users are more talkative among varies things well kinda (I notice that most rpers stick to rp only, weird).
Pretty much nails it.

Also, I don't do real social interaction because I don't like mainstream anything. Sports can suck a dick. Politics just angers me. Celebrity gossip doesn't interest me in the slightest. I don't drink, date, or gamble. I suck at small talk and nobody wants to talk about the things I like. Short version, I'm not just a square peg, I'm a fucking four-dimensional trapezoid peg. In a populous area I might be able to find a place to fit in. Out here in the sticks it's the Internet or nothing.

The forums, usually. I've been kind of away for a little while now though because they either feel very slow, or it feels like it's the exact same topics over and over again if they aren't. Though there's always been something of an element of redundancy of certain topics before, that being combined with the relative slowness of the forums compared to years ago can get a little dull.

I check out the forums whenever I check if there is a new Critical Miss or watch Zero Punctuation.

Sadly all the other series I watched have left but the relative lack of trolling is a big plus. Even in the more, er, political posts it seems most of the posters and the mods manage to keep things mostly civil.

Zero Punctuation, if that left I'd most likely leave entirely. Just really popping in right now out of curiosity, just passin' through. If I'm being honest the whole GG thing sorta turned me off the forums, if only because GG "discussions" are like people playing in ball pits; lots of balls flying everywhere, nothing getting done and I'm afraid that damp spot is pee.

Because people here don't like me. That's why I stay around.

Why would I give them exactly what they want by leaving? To hell with that noise.

Came here for ZP (Like erryone and their dog's flea's flea-dog) and stayed because why not?

Only forum I frequent these days, after all.

I suppose it's nostalgia for the olden internet days of forumery and chatrooms...also, I get to watch a perpetual argument with copious amounts of popcorn. And, occasionally, I get to word-vomit at people I sort of vaguely kind of maybe 'know' in the broadest sense of the term.

I dunno.

It's sort of habit at this point.

Its my main source of gaming news and there are some intresting topics.

At first I came for ZP but then stayed for Moviebob, Jimquistion, Unforgotten Realms, EC, and the Podcast.
Despite most of those being dead, the podcast taking a hit w/o Susan I'm still here.

I did leave during that period when GG more or less hijacked the forums, but I'm back now, lurking as always.
