Ok guys and gals, so I absolutey dig horror games and as far as I'm concerned this game looks like it'll soil my pants (cause I'm into that sort of thing). So do you think I should spend the money on it? If not what other horror game should I take on?

Looks pretty good. Don't know how terrifying it might be though. I'd buy it if I could find it cheap.

Now, I haven't played the game myself, but I've watched a bit of it and I'm not really impressed. Former Escapist Susan Arendt has a review up on Joystiq that pretty much matches what it looked like to watch. It's a game that uses "Ewww blood, guts and gore!" in an attempt to mask a mix of derivative and outright lacking gameplay. If your definition of horror is blood and guts, then you'll probably get what you want but that's about it.

My recommendations for other horror titles? Well, lots of people liked Outlast so there's that. Also, Neverending Nightmares is very cool and unique. The plus side? You can get both Outlast and Neverending Nightmares for maybe half of one Evil Within.

Fear is subjective.

But personally... NAY!!!

Either Shinji Mikami lost his mojo, or he just didn't give a fuck about this game and wanted to collect a paycheck. Just go play Resident Evil 4 again, or hell, just RE2, 3, or REmake.

Looks like it's a modern generation remake of Resident Evil 4 with extra goodies, and as someone who considers the actual Resi 4 one of the finest action horror games ever made, I say hell yeah you should get it!

That said, it does look like an action horror game and while those are good at creating creepy atmospheres and startling moments, I wouldn't classify them as outstanding horror experiences (i.e. genuinely terrifying). If you want something like that, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the way to go.

replay something good.
supposedly it is less shooting and more horror survival yet you are suppose to kill everything in site and upgrade your guns and character. That combined with bad controls and lack of horror extremely short levels and long loading times (game time is 4-10 hours for 15 levels). I would recommend you stay away.

That's a pretty apt description. It's like Mikami just wanted to make Resident Evil 4 again, and 70% into production was like 'No wait, let's make it like Silent Hill', but left in all the upgrade mechanics.

If you don't mind a game in the same vein as Resident Evil 4, surely you'll have a great time with this. Actually, anyone who's fond of survival horror games in general should buy it just to prove to idiots like Capcom that the genre is worthwhile putting money into. You vote with your pockets people. Here's hoping the game can do around 2M sales. That would make it a great success IMO.

Doesn't look all that scary, but still somewhat interested in it and will give it a look when it arrives later this week. Have heard some good things about it and some bad things.

People act like 1: Shinji Mikami only ever made Resident Evil, supposedly on his own, and 2: he wasn't last involved in Resident Evil in 2005.

I 'unno, putting his name so far forward was a poisoned chalice. Would a first time game from an ultimately unknown studio (even if Mikami was involved) have gotten even the attention from Bethesda without the pressure of the name?

A high profile team member can elevate a game, but the team and circumstances around them can't be forgotten about. It may be Shinji Mikami, but it's not old Capcom he's working at. Hideki Kamiya would mean nothing without Capcom/Platinum/Clover. Hideo Kojima didn't and couldn't make Metal Gear on his own.

Not that you shouldn't be disappointed, but I was just ruminating.

I'm hoping they can stay around for a second try.

Though I would like to see Silent Hill aesthetics left alone for a loooooong while. Even if Lone Survivor was as good as it was.

The thing is that Mikami has a reputation of being all 'This is shit -- let's scrap it and start over' even when a game is really far into production. Something most other developers wouldn't have the balls for. He did it with Resident Evil 2 and he did it with Resident Evil 4, thereby creating two of the best entries in the franchise. Sure he didn't make them alone, but he was the one who decided that things weren't running correctly and to find a way of getting it back on track.

This creates an image of someone who has a great passion for making games, and making them as good as he possibly can. And the end result that is The Evil Within falls way short of that type of pedigree.

And you mention Bethesda, but Machine Games was an equally unknown studio before Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Im about 5 chapters in on the ps4 version. At first..i was bored very bored. It's not scary, its definetley tense at times. But the more equipped you are the better the game gets slowly. However as mikamis grand return to the ultimate survival horror game it is definetly not. Im a fan of the genre. Always have been. To me this game feels like Mikami realized the last few RE games were shit and wanted to get back up to speed on the direction surival games are going. There are ALOT of elements from better games in Evil within. Also alot of the levels and backgrounds so far you would swear were ripped right out of silent hill or RE. As far as combat goes its a little spastic. And games like the last of us and Metal gear have done bottle breaking diversions and hiding, and gunplay better. It is a fun game though and is getting better the more i play. I'm not exactly enthralled by the story or the entire experience as a hole...but its fun, and def gory, and again...not scary.

What bothers me a bit is the difficulty. it is very very frustrating at early levels. And the larger "boss" type enemies are way to hard to bring down in that scavenge scavenge then blow my wad into his chest sort of way after he killed me 7 times. There is also that trial and error sort of gameplay that bothers me these days. Not as tedious as Souls...but it can be aggravating at times. But the reward is there when you finally clear a level. Its worth a shot, depending on future DLC and if youre a fan of the genre thing its a buy. Its a hard game to explain really..it doenst do what other games have already done as good. But as an overall package it's done well...if that makes sense.

Hm. Good point.

Even the good can falter, I guess. Like I said, I hope they manage to stick around and learn from this one.

I for one can't wait to get my PS4 so I can play it. Resident Evil is one of my favourite gaming franchises, so having it directed by Shinji Mikami is a definite plus as far as I am concerned, especially as he once stated that he wants to get back to the roots of survival horror. I am definitely going to give it a shot, even if I have to borrow it from a friend of mine if I can get him away from it for two seconds :)

It seems pretty good and I've heard good things about it so far, the best description I've heard of it is that if you took Black Dhalia Murder's music and put it in game form, you'd get this, if it helps any :p

I think its fantastic personally. Its like a modern day rendition of Resident Evil 4. The atmosphere is kick-ass and the action is very deliberate and concise. Other than being a pastiche of popular horror movies the monster designs in Evil Within have a very imaginitive spin, and Mikami also scaled back the cheese factor compared to RE4. The way they balanced the game by giving the player just enough ammo to get by is very impressive as well. The amount of detail in the visuals is also staggering and the pacing is second to none. I find this one of the most satisfying, edge-of-your-seat games I have played in like, years. The game is also a mix of modern and oldschool game-design that harkens back to the foundation of RE4, so a contemporary action game this ain't. Once you settle into the game's(strangely familiar) rhythm though this becomes the one true(albeit fairly obscure) successor to RE4. No mean feat as RE4 is probably my most favorite game of all time. Mikami hasn't lost any of his magic when it comes to these types of games though that's for sure.

Wasn't RE2 directed by Hideki Kamiya? Mikami was only the producer I believe. Anyways, some elements of Evil Within actually reminded me a lot of the 'hookman' version of RE4. Also Mikami created Tango gameworks just to be an independent developer and give a new generation of designers a chance, so Evil Within is the game he wanted make. If all he wanted was to just 'collect a paycheck' he could've just stayed with Capcom and be perpetually tied to Resident Evil.

Definitely yay for me, it certainly has heightened my sense of apprehension and fear.
