Gerrard, Jagielka, Henderson, Hart, Baines, Sterling, Welbeck and Sturridge were pretty naff, Gerrard and Jagielka especially so.

Glad Rooney proved his doubters wrong, thought he was probably one of the best players on the pitch behind Suarez.

Referee deserves a mention too and not in a good way, Godín was lucky to be on the pitch and should definitely have been sent off. Felt the ref was turning a blind eye to a lot of fouls aimed our way too but at the end of the day we're just shit, so no excuses, and yeah, the result doesn't at all surprise me.

Watched the England - Uruguay match at double speed (so I could watch the Japan - Greece game), and I thought England were unlucky to lose. However, they tried to be too intricate when building up attacks (which made them slow) and Uruguay easily defended for the most part. And you just can't defend the way England did against Suarez.

Still, you're not mathematically out yet, England =P

Hart "mind the hair" looked terrified every-time the ball went near him
Rooney "mind the hair" looked as though he spotted a pie in the back of the goal, and for once it paid off and he actually scored (no pie though, so he's gutted)
And the Uraguayan with the concussion (Pereira) is still wandering round the pitch insisting he's able to play.

All in all, exactly what we thought would happen before the match!

Damn it, we were so close as well! Maybe 2018 will be England's year :-(

Uruguay played great and no one should take that away from them. Sad it's not how the British newspapers work really. They need someone to blame and Rooney may be on the top of that list.
If they pin it on anyone I bet it'll be the referee, I swear he was looking the other way half the time the Uraguayans fouled us but as soon as our team stepped anywhere out of line he was blowing the whistle like no tomorrow.
Argentinian here and... I thought so too! I swear at one time one of the Uruguayan players literally grabbed an english (I don't remember, might have been Sterling or Gerard... honestly don't know) by the arm and like pulled or something... Sometimes the camera doesn't repeat stuff that should be repeated but... yeah, did the referee do anything then? No! And it was clear they should have been expelled from the game... Actually I feel kind of disappointed by the refereeing from this world cup in general.

Chile and Colombia are so good to watch. Think France and Germany will go far. Argentina should too; their run isn't that tough. I'm still expecting Brazil to get their act together and go for it. Spain were never gonna win it but I didn't expect them to crash out so soon. Belgium lack the team unity to go far and I'm unconvinced by the Netherlands.

England are a joke
Indeed! I think I speak for everyone when I say Colombia really surprised us this year! Maybe they do have a chance after all...

I can't believe all the major contenders that are going down in round one. Well, Spain and England. I guess that leaves Brazil and the Netherlands. I don't think Argentina or Uruguay have World Cup wood this year.

This is why it pays to be of multiple nationalities...

England seems pretty much out of the count but France and Mexico are doing great so far.

Though I'm a bit :/ at some of Suarez petty comments, I swear every time England loses to a 2nd/3rd world country in world cup they treat it as some kinda great wrong that's finally been righted.
Can't peeps just have a good game and not be bitches about it afterwards?

France: They got rid of all the players who embarassed the country last world cup by going on strike (though in way I found that so very very typical french xD Yeh lets go on strike at the worst possible moment! I could just imagine the riots if the english team pulled stuff like that) and it seems to be paying off, having less ego in the team works it seems.

Mexico: I'm dimly hopeful that this might be one of Mexicos best performances in a world cup, I'd never have thought they could keep Brazil at bay, now anything seems possible.

Hey, question. What do you call the World Cup's second stage, you know the one with 16 teams left and just before quarter-finals? It's "octavos de final" in Spanish but I can't seem to find a decent translation.

I've usually heard it described as the "last 16". Wikipedia agrees with me, so that's the strong option. :p

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-elimination_tournament#Nomenclature

The round before the quarter finals is sometimes called the "Round of Sixteen", "Last Sixteen", or (in South Asia) "pre-quarter finals"; in some other languages "eighth-finals" is used

Didn't Suarez headbutt a referee? I heard that he eats human flesh.

It isn't Suarez' fault though, he can't help what he is. No, I hold Steven Gerard entirely responsible; he must have offended the God of Victory with his relentlessly being miserable. Clearly the only rational course left to the nation is to burn him at the stake when he gets back to placate the primordial forces.

Also it would make Liverpool fans sad which is probably reason enough.

not read the papers (refuse to acknowledge the s*n after Hillsborough) but it would be unfair to suarez if they did that. not sure what you mean by 'scapegoat again' though. i'm a livrpool supporter but even I (or any reasonable person) can see that he has done a few bad things.

To put it into perspective though, we were beaten by Italy - Euro 2012 finalists, ranked 9th in the world, Uruguay - World Cup 2010 3rd place, ranked 7th in the world, 2011 champions of copa America.

I see no reason why the media should blame suarez or anybody for that matter, England were beaten by the better team and that's that.

however.....if they did wanna cause some drama there is this little nugget....
After England's defeat to Italy last Saturday, Hodgson declined an invitation to describe Suarez as a "world-class" forward who was in the same bracket as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"He (Suarez) will only be at that level when he shows it on this particular stage (the World Cup)," Hodgson said.

good job roy, way to fire up Uruguay's best player.

And Germany too, who I think are probably in with a better chance to win it than the Dutch to be honest. Also, England was never a contender.

When I said "again", I meant every 4 years, when England crashes out of a world cup or loses a game, the red tops often want someone to blame. Gerrard is already getting the blame. Out of 22 players on that pitch, he is the one getting the flak for it. The Italy game, it was Rooney. The Suarez thing, yeah he has done some stupid shit and he did deserve the punishment he got. Heck, in the last world cup, he knocked the ball away with his hands, got away with it and cost Ghana the match.

I agree with you though. England were beaten by two great and hard working teams and nothing more they can do about it. Look at this link;

It's the first sport page and most having Gerrard in some sort of fiasco.

Mainly, I'm just saying there will always be some sort of scapegoat when it comes to an event like this. IT shouldn't happen at all but unfortunately, the tabloid papers love to drag things out like this and create a new villain. Remember the whole Cristiano Ronaldo situation at the Euros some odd years ago?

I think England have been a bit unlucky with their games to come out with no points at all. This World Cup has been so much better than their previous performances but they just had tough games and couldn't produce the final bit of magic necessary to get the goals. Still, at least they weren't grinding out goal-less draws against weak teams like they normally do. I don't think there's any shame in going out playing the way they did.

I want the Dutch to do well because they play exciting football and Chile really impressed me so I hope their match-up is a good one. Brazil and Argentina aren't exactly setting the competition alight but the Germans look strong again and there has been a lot of goals this tournament so hopefully we get some good stuff in the round of 16.

I would say it is after every England defeat rather than every four years :p

just checked that link and yeah I see what you mean, what a load of crap! there is even an article on roy hodgson saying 'he MUST go!'
why? what would it change?
I swear we are the only country that can't just support our team, we have to pile on this huge pressure and expectation as if England have some divine right to win.

ah how sad, it says the toure brothers brother has died.

are you referring to the wink episode by the way?

Yep. Wink-gate. When Ronaldo winked at his manager and for some reason, it meant he had a personal mission to take down. Objective: Get Rooney anger enough to be sent off. The mission was a success. The media lost their minds!!... Despite the fact that Rooney did step on the guys balls and Ronaldo had nothing to do with it because Rooney does have a bad temper. Well back then he did. So, who was to blame? The England team playing poorly against Portugal? No!! Blame Ronaldo because we need a villain and he winked!!!! HE WINKED DAMN YOU!!!

Sigh...

That's just pathetic.

So am I. I thought our group would be England, Italy and Uruguay fighting over the two qualifying places with Costa Rica losing every game. Now they look set to beat the hardest group in the competition with nine points. Wow.

So it's official, England are out of the World Cup. I'm not even disappointed ... I've sort of gotten used to it by now.....
