Alrik's door swung open right as Diocles was passing, the barbarian stepping out into the hallway; his eyes were suspicious, but not for Diocles; they scanned the hall menacingly.

"Diocles." He gripped the man by the shoulder. "Much noise on this ship, for so late at night. All is well?"

Urthemiel's scaly teats.

Diocles jumped a little as Alrik surprised him. He hesitated to answer. His anger had faded. Surely he'd hurt Sul more than the barbarian had.

"..Yes, Alrik. All is well. I had a discussion with Constable Davinius, and the elves joined us after. Nothing to be concerned about."

"Ah... good. Will go speak with him. Come get me if any trouble."

He shut his door and headed down the hall for Thaedrin's room.

She did not doubt Ulrin?s words. There was something definitely off about Diocles, but she could always ask him about it later. There were more important things to take care of. A quick peek wouldn?t hurt. Thaedrin could be resting or doing something that would grant her the element of surprise. But, would it be worth the risk? Sulahn?nehn was just about to agree with the other elf when Alrik came into view and she immediately shrunk, clamming up. She grabbed Ulrin by the wrist and rushed away. Another opportunity would arise sooner or later.

The other elf had his back to the approaching barbarian, so when Sulahn'nehn grabbed his wrist he was a bit startled, until the sound of footsteps came to his ears. Another person up and about tonight? He turned to look at the person approaching just as the female elf hurried him away.

Theadrin's pet. But of course he was coming to check on his master. Ulrin frowned and glared forward, over the female elf's shoulders and into the darkness. Diocles, Alrik, who were they to see next? The Jarrik? Tonight was a bust. Once they were well away from the Constable's door he stopped and pulled back on his hand.

"Sulahn'nehn, it does not seem like we will get anything done tonight. Perhaps once we are on land again, things will be more in our favor."

?We don?t have much of a choice.? She kept her voice low, not knowing exactly how many people were out and about. ?Rest, if you can. We can continue later.?

Sulahn?nehn retired to her hammock near Ghil again, unable to sleep. The same chanting thoughts returned to her, drowning out her plots.

Alrik nodded to the elves as they passed him. They averted their eyes, which he supposed was progress enough.

He paused for a moment in front of Thaedrin's door. There was something he was supposed to do before opening someone else's door... something having to do with good manners...

He thought about it another twenty seconds before giving it up as a lost cause and opening the door, striding immediately inside.

"Constable Thaedrin! Awake?"

The mage had been most certainly the opposite of awake when the brigand walked in, but their current location at the center of the bay and memory of recent... "violence" caused him to snap upright at Alrik's bellowing. His hair was matted to his neck and shoulders and his eyes unfocused, but he retained the modesty to cover himself with the sheets.

"What? Islanders? Gods, just, give me a moment."

Alrik frowned, sitting on the side of Thaedrin's bed.

"Apologies. Warden Diocles said you, he, and elves were just talking, so thought you would be up. Elves were outside your door just now, scurried away when I arrived..."

He paused for a moment, sniffing the air curiously.

Thaedrin's expression twisted into apprehension.

"The elves? What for?" For a moment, he thought they'd heard everything--but that was foolish, wasn't it? If Diocles had been found out, no doubt he would have heard some high-pitched screaming on the subject. No. They were just generally misbehaving, then. Suddenly, he wondered if the archer's plan to assault Alrik was in tandem with a similar scheme reserved for himself. Alrik's current detective work snapped him out of his worry and brought annoyance to the foreground. "Will you stop that? What are you doing in here if there's no attack?"

"Thought good to discuss morale problem."

Alrik had only recently learned the word "morale", and liked to use it frequently.

"If mage elf girl goes crazy, will need to kill her. Other elf girl will go crazy too then, kill her also. Ghil is solid soldier but loves friends more than Wardens, so then have to kill her too. Jarrick not have to kill. Diocles... not sure. Depend on how much he like elf girl.

He nodded, but then thought to add, in case of any confusion: "Pretty elf girl. Not ugly one. But anyway, shame to kill him. And Commander probably angry if we come back with no Wardens. But, kind of set up for failure, since all so angry and crazy."

His fingers went to the bridge of his nose, trying to crush out the forming migraine.

"Yes, well, we need to have a discussion of our own. Trust me when I tell you that your defense of my authority is very much appreciated, but, there must be other methods to explore. This isn't what Vorenus wants, I promise you. And it's causing worlds of trouble for the both of us. Disrespect ought be punished perhaps more... Gently. Expectations ought be made known. Then perhaps the women will quiet their bitterness and Diocles will pull his head from his ass and you and Ulrin can live happily ever after."

He frowned. "But... Ulrin is ugly one."

Shrugging, he got back up. "Okay. Try your way for a while. But be sure and keep eyes open."

"Alrik," he called to the man before he left, "if you're truly concerned, you might even apologize. To Sulahn'nehn, that is."

Alrik looked surprised, then thoughtful.

"Think so? Hmm. Can do it, if you think good idea. Said would try it your way. Even if she deserve slap."

"I wish I disagreed."

Thaedrin rolled over, clearly dismissing him. All he wanted to do was try and get back that illusion of peace before the sun came up and reality would return. Soon enough, the ship's crew would be back above deck and there would be no hope of sleeping then.

Jarrik rolled out of his hammock, in a motion long honed from practice, feeling even more refreshed than from a bed of fine merchant lord's linens. A lust for greater adventure had kept him from the life of a sailor, but being aboard a ship brought back fond memories of yesteryears, spurred on by the familiar sensations of scent, sight and sound. It felt good, and he could not recall the last time he had slept so soundly.

He used the small basin of fresh water, a luxury reserved for passengers and ranked crew, to freshen up before stalking off in search of food. The galley was meager with an wizened man missing a hand preparing food, it was common to have injured men take up the duties of ship's cook. The old timer was surprisingly deft, quickly presenting a plate of salted pork, cheese, ration biscuits and a cup of ale.

He sat reminiscing picking at his food and took to mumbling out a few words from the old songs. "Farewell an' adieu to you ladies of Antiva...We clewed up our tops'ls, stuck out tacks and sheets..."

The sound of Jarrik stirring about the room woke Ulrin from his light slumber. Certainly sleeping in the hammock was better than previous arrangements they had had to endure, but between Darkspan infested dreams and the failed assassination attempt, his mind was restless. He had perhaps only slept an hour or two throughout the night.

The elf sat up in his hammock just as the Rivaini was leaving the room. He too made his way over to the water provided in an attempt to hasten the awakening of his senses before trudging down to the halls to find whatever meal was offered at the galley. He took his plate with a nod to the old man and started to eat as he walked about trying to find a seat. It was simple, not like the last meal they'd had, but he actually enjoyed it much more than having to choke down the food served at the merchant's home.

The night had been mostly restless, her eyes only closed when she simply could not keep them open anymore. When she woke, almost all thought of finding Thaedrin had gone. Which was just fine, considering doing so in daylight with everyone awake may end slightly differently than last night's attempt.

Sulahn'nehn fumbled getting out of her hammock and landed less than gracefully on her feet. The elf kept her head down and her face as hidden as she could while making her way around for breakfast. A few questions and strange looks later, she found herself in the same room as the newcomer. She sat herself and mumbled a "Good morning." to Jarrik and Ulrin.

Awakening for breakfast was something of an ordeal. The supernaturally agile Diocles rolled out of his hammock with all the grace of a bear, hitting the floor arms first with a grunt. He went about his morning ablutions with about as much enthusiasm before strapping on his gear. Armor, kukris, baldric with throwing knives, bow, quiver.. He had to count his gear to make sure he wasn't forgetting anything. Life as a soldier had taught him to always be ready for battle.

Life as a scoundrel was beginning to take it's toll on his mind, though. He made his way to the galley without haste, his mind lost in another place. The archer failed to even thank the cook for the food as he took his plate, setting up near Jarrik and the elves. He gave them all a nod in greeting before digging in with the hunger possessed only by demons and wardens.
