I hope this hasn't been posted before :p

What was the first online game you ever played? How old were you? What were your first impressions? Did it have an effect on what your favourite genre of games is, or what your favourite games are now anyway?

I'm just curious :)

The first online game I ever played was Counter - Strike 1.5 and I was 13 or 14 I think. This was also the first time I ever used a pc so I had not played half life or anything like that, really this was the first FPS I ever played also. It was on my brother-in-law's PC, he pretty much introduced me to the internet :p I was truely terrible at that game and didn't get good at first person shooters until a few months after CS:S's release. My first impression was literally WOW. I was hooked the moment I started playing, it was so new to me and was so exciting. My favourite genre of games are online FPS's and they have been since I first touched the mouse. I don't think it will ever change :)

Technically? The first 'Descent', over modem with my buddy. Ahh, the days of 'Waiting for Call' while yelling at my parents 'DON'T ANSWER IT! I'M GONNA PLAY A GAME!' Ahh...good times.

But actually online, over the internet online? Quake 2 deathmatches. Sweet sweet deathmatches. On dial up! Woo! 3 cheers for lag-leading the rocket launcher!

Original Half-life I think. I don't think I played Quake or Doom II outside local networks. It was lots of fun but man, I sucked at FPS back then. I've never been big on online multiplayer, but TF2 really got me back into it.

I was 17. Ele/Necro, named Vladimir Pyrobokor, on the original Guild Wars campaign.

Yeah, that's right. It was less than 2 years ago.

Oh well.

Technically, it was Resistance: Fall of Man. What? I came out of the PS2 era, few games ever even had online play and I didn't game on PC much at the time.

Age of Empires. Crap, it's lagging! Hit pause a dozen times, that'll fix it!

Jedi Knight came shortly thereafter.

Counting out those hilariously disgusting browser games, I think it'd actually be gears of war.
I remember the first game was warzone on mansion, where everyone piled to the stop stairways and started downing each other frantically with lancers. It just stuck out for me, how it felt like I was actually playing the campaign but with... real people!

It was still a couple of weeks before I spoke to anyone, though. I'm such a beautiful coward.

Probably Unreal Tournament though it may have been Team Fortress Classic...I don't remember.

Though if you want to get technical it's Red Alert over modem.

Well, I'm assuming you are discounting BBS doors and MUDs and such. Sticking to commercially available titles that require at least modem-to-modem connections, my first online game would have to have been Doom II. I was 21.

GEEEEEEZER! Nah I'm kidding. Seriously, when was the last time you hear anyone talk about BBS? Much less even know what it is? Man that's a thread all it's own.

And Doom 2? Classic. I used to do Doom 1 over LAN.

Age of Empires 2, closely followed by Team Fortress Classic back in 1999.

Been playing online in some form ever since.

I watched my buds play Doom I. I was busy finishing Ultima Underworld and trying to bed the waitress in Legend of the Red Dragon.
