MY first sandbox game was Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall. However, there were older ones. At the very least, Elite would qualify.

As much as I hate the game, Fallout was pretty Sandboxy, there was also a game for the N64 which was the first 3D sandbox game, I forget its name.

Go on the Guinness World Records website. They have a gaming section.
...and nothing in there to answer the question at hand.

I suppose it is Elite depending on your definition. You could say that it is a trading sim but it still is a sandbox. You could also call Sim City a sandbox. This is like the "is Monkey Island an RPG" debate all over again.

It was Hunter for the Commodore Amiga
Didn't Midwinter come out before that?

According to the Guinness World Records Gamers Edition 08 (thank god I had that when I needed it) it was Grand Theft Auto III.

I'd really like to say Freelancer but I can't back that up since I know a lot more before it. Fallout is a good example but I don't really know the answer to this question.

i was going to say fallout 2 but then i realised it was actually daggerfall
Not to mention that Fallout came before Fallout 2 anyways, plus it was a spiritual sequel to a much older game called Wasteland or something like that.

You're kidding. That's like saying "What was the first platformer?"

Here's betting someone will come along and tell me the first platformer.

And no, not really. A space sim would have to be X3-level to be sandbox.
Lol Well I couldn't not do this now :)

1st platformer was called Mr Robot on the ZX81. It was a very simple afair that consisted of a square that had to jump other squares to reach the right hand side of the screen. Took about 30 mins to program (you had to program all your games in those days) and about 10 seconds to complete.

1st sandbox game would probably have to be either elite (BBC micro) or Dun Darach (ZX spectrum) depending on your definition. Both gave you a free to roam environment but one was more of a puzzle game and the other more of a space sim.

Thats why I ask if space sims can be considered sand box, because then elite would be prety much the only one (space sim) that is considered sand box, since its the only one that you can use everything in there, alto you cannot build like X universe

About the first, i was thinking Elder scrolls but we do have to find a definition of Sand Box, I remember playing Fallout but I didn't associate it with sandbox game

most of the times we have Sand box games associated with RPG or 3rd person Shooters, that we only remember them that way, i don't really remember how free was Fallout 1 ? In Elder Scrolls i do know we could enter any house (or most at least) in the landscape

And its not only the free to roam, i guess, how Sand Box can X3 be considered, you are free to roam, but with in those system, you never actually manage to get close to a planet on into it like Elite

first gta 3 style 3d sandbox game I can recall(and have) is bethesda's The Terminator from 1990, though I have no idea if it is indeed the first. Granted, regardless of being the first, the fact that they implemented a decent sized LA and added options such as carjacking, robbing stores, gunplay and going to the hospital for treatment(or scares if yer a terminator), mixed with being able to choose to play either the terminator or Kyle Reese (with different objectives) makes it pretty impressive nonetheless.
