I jump off he highest point I can find to see if I will die, and if i do whether or not I will bounce. I enjoy bouncing my characters dead body off of things.

I wait on the title screen to see the attract mode (Intro movie at the boot-up). Then I proceed to the options, go in the controller settings and memorize which button does what.
Fascinating. I never look at the controller settings unless I play it first, and find that the reload button isn't X or something.

OT: The first thing I do is watch the cinematics or, failing that, name my character Steve.

Usually try and see my feet, try and familiarize myself better with the controls, see how high and if I can jump etc.

really nothing interesting

In RPG's, I murder a civilian

In FPS's, I murder an allied NPC.

If I'm not killing someone the game would rather me not kill within the first 5 minutes of play, I am unsatisfied.

I go to the restroom and do my business because when I play a new game my bladder usually suffers as my eyes and brain refuse to step out of the game. I have very often come within a few seconds of soiling myself while playing video games.

I start jumping around and looking for exploitable actions like rolling to get around faster(action games)or meleeing or sprinting to cancel reload animations (shooters). I also take the time to look at the character animations and how fluid or choppy they are.

Depends on the impression the opening leaves on Me:

Oblivion had a very silly opening and I despise when importent people die just to shivvy over a plot to you so I wandered around and saw how way too serious the game took itself.

Usually I try not to listen to the very first thing a game tells Me to do and do the opposite of that

Watch the opening cinematic that starts when you put the disk in the machine.
No exceptions. Have to watch it.

EDIT: But even before that, I have to check the achievements.

I make the controls conform to my will (I get used to everything I can do with them).

I do the following three things, before starting a new game.

1. Read the Manuel to see if it has a preview on the story.

2. Set the options to my liking.

3. Watch the opening intro.

Not so much what I do, but what I dont - whereever possible, I try to ignore any handbooks or tutorials as much as I can. Thats not as much of a big deal, seing as most Pc-games of a genre pretty much control the same, but I still like to figure out what I'm doing on my own, rather than being told to press W to walk forward for the onehundredwhatnots' time.

I watch the entirety of the opening credits and such. It's like my ritual to always sit through the credits of a game after I beat it (Unless the game just sucked.)
I do this as well. It is throwback to the days where their was a bonus for waiting such as a new cutscene or added content for the next playthrough unlocked. I was always afraid that if i skipped the credits they would not give me those things, DOn't know for sure whether any games actualy punished you in this way.

Check mouse sensitivity or controller inversion. For PC games check what graphics suit my computer (a very crappy one). After that just play the damn game.

Usually, I'll pick up my sidearm/lowest damage weapon and go around headshotting with it in an FPS, or start my character off as a dick in an RPG and slowly progress him to a decent human being (Not a paragon of justice, just... friendly-ish)
