I know what you're thinking. "That can't be real, it's just a joke." No. Follow the link. There are people that actually believe that the earth is flat. Over 4000, no less. I'm sure some people there are just hipster trolls or whatever, but some people actually, legitimately do still follow that theory. Part of me wants to laugh, but I just can't.

No amount of education will prevent a small minority of people from being batshit insane. We laugh about it but there are genuinely people out there who believe that world leaders are reptilian aliens in disguise, that AIDS isn't caused by the HIV virus, that the Jews secretly control the world etc. In this case I expect most of the 'Flat-Earthers' are probably trolls or just it in for the lulz, but just be glad these people don't have any sort of real power.

I dunno, there are some people who just dont understand very basic biology/physics.

Its expensive and socially frowned upon to send them back to primary school to re educate them with basic level science, and its almost impossible for other adults to properly give them a comprehensive education in a debate environment. I´ve stumbled upon those guys a few times throughout my internet lifetime. Apparently the consensus is that the earth is flat and it along with everything else is infinitely accelerating upward (which creates gravity). This is also being kept secret by a global conspiracy because of reasons.

Funny thing is it doesn´t really matter. If you think the earth is flat and come to the same conclusions as to how things function as someone who thinks the earth is round then it is really all a matter of perspective, even if one perspective needlessly complicates things. Not that I think these guys are especially interested in the physics behind it all.

Ah yes I remember stumbling upon that site years ago. They claim all space photographs have been created artificially, that the International Space Station is a hoax and many other obtuse things. Like others have said I am sure trolls amount for a good percent of the population. Something tells me at least a few hundred or thousand concurrent users truly believe.

When wind turbines were put up where I used to live a huge uproar happened which is still going to this day. One man claimed he couldn't drive past them on his way home from work without throwing up. I'm sure this man does have health problems, and windmills are contributing, but not in the way he thinks they are.

Oh, that's nothing. This guy, megasage (being torn apart by cutefuzzyweasel) believes that the sun spins around the earth. Which wouldn't be quite as stupid as believing the earth is flat. I mean, it's stupid, incredibly stupid, but with just a little logical thought you'd be able to figure out that the earth is not flat. Which a tiny, tiny fraction more, it'd also be obvious that the earth revolves around the sun.

No, what makes this more stupid is how he tries to explain himself. This is a two part video, by the way. The original was simply that long and stupid it required two episodes to take apart his argument.

That's what I thought at first, surely no one could be that stupid (oh no I just offended her neurotype!). But as I was reading through the thing in morbid fascination and seeing that it had seen updates for over a year, and the sheer hostility evident in the writing, it slowly began to dawn on me, holy shit, this person is genuinely insane. I mean, I think trolling would be a little less viciously insane.

Honestly, there's something quite adorable about flat-earthers. Their beliefs aren't really offensive or political like holocaust deniers, JFK assassination theorists, or 9/11 conspiracy theorists. Their beliefs are so ridiculous nobody could ever take them seriously, but also pretty harmless assuming none of them become rocket scientists. (and I think we're pretty safe there) The most obnoxious thing about their beliefs is the fact that they believe all space exploration is bogus, and I'm not too bothered by that considering how small and insignificant they are.

It's kinda like seeing a dog bark at it's own reflection because it thinks it's another dog. You almost kinda hope he never figures it out because it's fun to watch.
