I am aware of that. The problem is they never stopped with it there. They took it and ran with it and now continually wave it in the face of everyone who doesn't believe in everything that pure science tells them (and lets face a fact - nobody really does that anyway). What started out as something that most religious people would agree with has been turned against them. It's become like that atheist bus campaign.Anton P. Im in a very similar place as you right now dude. I will definitely give The Myth of Sisyphus a read, it looks very interesting. I have a theory i call Reverse Solipsism. Solipsism being the idea that we cant be sure anything exists except or own minds, i propose that our sense of self is entirely grounded in the observations and interpretations of other beings/people. So essentially we are all just piles of atoms and the only thing that makes you John or Karen is other peoples perception of you as John or Karen.AgentNein said:So it's not that it doesn't make sense to you, it's that you don't WANT to believe in it.
You know, I can respect that. I'm an existentialist at heart, and believe me it's been a tough road. If there's no inherent meaning to life, and no permanence (even to the idea of the 'self') than what's the point? It's something I've had to struggle with for a long time. I recommend you read The Myth of Sisyphus. Good read, really delves into this.
But just because there isn't an inherent meaning doesn't mean that you can't bring your own subjective meaning to your life. Why would we obey laws and rules? Because most laws and rules in the end simply try and keep everybody as safe and happy as we can be.
In an objectively meaningless world, we should do our best to get as much enjoyment and fulfillment out of life as we can, and do our best to make sure others can be free to achieve those same ends. When nothing you do matters, all that matters is what you do. Or something like that.
