A big ol' giant "Meh"

He's not a terrible character but he's like Master Chief: You are supposed to become them so they have next to no personality. You are not playing as Gordon Freeman but as yourself.
At least Master Chief talks once in a while. He's actually more of the "stoic badass" whereas Gordon Freeman is more literally a stand-in.

Now that I think about it I don't really like him. He's not characterized enough for me to relate to, but he is just a little to defined (name and appearance mainly) for him to represent me the way Shepard or the Elder Scrolls' main characters are supposed to.

He is the übernerd. He is just that awesome.
Hes the Ubermench LAIR! A man so stoic that not even the end of everything he loves (possibly by his own hands) could cause him to speak a word! He goes forth through time itself, a plaything of unknown and unknowable forces, with only the warmth and joy of killing the mindless monsters that have infested his home to keep him sane!

He is both a scientist and an action hero. Need I say more? As for the "silent treatment" he reserves for everyone, well... Does he even need to address them when his level of awesomeness is beyond imagination?

If we're going with the blank slate metaphor, then he's a blank slate that Ross Scott and Machinima have vandalized and everyone actually kind of likes it so they keep that interpretation up.

Gordon Freeman is a very bad listener. Whenever someone talks to him, he likes finding objects and tossing them all around the place. Sometimes he hits them with a crowbar. And he gives no replies, making all questions asked to him rhetorical.
His persona is created by those who know and talk to him, never by his own voice. Therefore, any gamer who plays the game can give their own persona to the Freeman.

Nonetheless, he is good at killing badnicks

I don't really like him mainly because of when in game people go on about how awesome he is all the time. Just makes him feel a little sueish.

So I don't love him but I don't hate him. He's an OK character made much stronger by his cast. My God...Gordon might be Batman!

Think about it...alone, Batman is not a terribly interesting character. However, his cast around him lifts him up so high that he becomes something awesome. That's what Gordon is!
To be fair, Master Chief has a personality in the books. [sub]Fucking shame that Bungie is to retarded to take advantage of the expanded universe[/sub]

OT: Very meh, the whole "Insert yourself" thing is hollow to me. I want to see a character evolve and develop and exist; besides, I REFUSE to believe Alyx has a thing for Gordon when he hasn't SAID A FUCKING WORD TO HER.

Hero or not someone staring at you for long periods of time is creepy...not charming.

It's like what Yahtzee said: He's fun because he's a sort of "fill in the blanks" character; he is whatever we want him to be. I may see him as an intelligent everyman who is thrust into horrible circumstances, whereas someone else may think of him as an all-out badass. This isn't a trait that's associated with ALL silent protagonists; Half Life (which I have been replaying recently) was actually built to fit this.
So I guess I am pretty fond of Gordon Freeman, but more or less in the same way I would be fond of a character I created in an RPG; since their personality is up to me, of course I'm going to make them likeable.

Silent protagonists are actually okay when they seem like they should be silent. I don't expect Ranger from Quake to start jabbering on; there's no one to talk to, and it wouldn't really fit the game's atmosphere.
I think the best example as to what I'm talking about would be Pointman from F.E.A.R. and Beckett from F.E.A.R. 2. Pointman was supposed to be cold and robotic; the fact that he wore a mask only accentuated this. He was almost always alone, trudging through some abandoned building or basement. Beckett, on the other hand, was almost always surrounded by fellow marines that he never said a word to. He really seemed like he should have talked. He wasn't some mentally disturbed psychic-ninja; he was just a guy.

People don't like Gordon because he doesn't talk and has "no character"?? That's like asking why pizza is awesome and then being disappointed that it hasn't got a PhD in Physics.

Pizza is just obviously awesome, because it is Pizza.
Gordon Freeman's awesomeness is equally inherent. Look at all the shit he goes through and then tell me he isn't awesome.
Screw what I was rambling on about; this is the perfect description.

Gordon Freeman is YOU.

I don't see why people keep saying he's boring... It's like saying that the Dragonborn is boring or the Warden from Dragon Age is bad because they don't talk or don't have a standout personality etc.

You cannot like him or dislike him, because he's a non-entity.
He is a disembodied pair of hands.

Freeman is interesting as a character only because of his experiences, without them, he is a blank slate.

BTW: who here grew a goatee because of Freeman?
Show of hands!
