SPOILER WARNING
After watching the recent mid-series finale(?), I was left slightly confused about what the future holds for the programme. Before the shock reveal at the very end of the episode, I had presumed that the little girl we saw regenerate at the end of Day of the Moon was to be the Doctor's replacement (Or something similar), due to the 1,103 Doctor's death the episode before.

However, it was then revealed that The Little Girl (Amy and Rory's daughter) was River Song, I wonder what's going to happen next. We've seen both River Song and The Doctor die, so what's going to happen when the time comes for Matt Smith to leave? Are they going to bring the Doctor back somehow? Retcon his death? Do the same for River Song? Or something else?

I'd like to know what my fellow Escapists think they'll do regarding this.

Oh, just like to say: something went wrong with the poll. when I say "retcon the 1,103 Doctor" I mean his death. Same goes for River Song.

I'm thinking other. Whatever they do, it'll be interesting to say the least. No idea what it is, but I think it's too early to say we have all the evidence.

It's one of the BBC's top shows, I doubt they're going to kill off the doctor permanantly.

If the Doctor wasn't lying about his age in that episode (considering how quickly he's been going through regenerations, it's a little weird for this face to last so long), that leaves about a century before it happens for him.

Oh, and that was still the 11th Doctor. That was his age, not his number of regenerations.

He'll regenerate. He can do 507 times.

As told by Russel T Davis.

Also, hinted at more than usual by http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/faq/plot_continuity.shtml

Doctor Who will keep going for as long as it draws good ratings, so I can't see it ending any time soon. As for the start of the series will the Doctor getting shot, I'm sure they'll figure things out.

Hell, The Master was very dead at the end of series three, his body was cremated as well, and he managed to make it back. Never say never folks!

Sorry you misunderstood me. I know it's the 11th doctor, that's why I said '1,103' not '1,103rd'

My mistake. I must have just read that part too quickly or something.

They'll keep it going until there's no more money in it.

Russell T Davis already re-wrote the mythology to the point where he could get away with just about anything, and I doubt that they would stop now.

I'm not sold on this series, the living flesh episodes were the closest to good, and they weren't special. The most recent episode decided to forfeit any guise of quality control in favour of "shock" revelations. It was just really badly done.

I've also had enough of Matt Smith's face

They'll retcon his death. Matt Smith has aid in interviews that he wants to stay on and I don't think they would actively advertise this series to America when they will just replace the actor at the end of it. Thus confusing audiences that have little clue what's going on if they haven't seen it before.

Or bring back the ganger Doctor and have him be shot by the spaceman.

I'm sure they will retcon, just like they do with everything else.
Knowing Moffat he will just throw in some insane explanation and shove it down viewers throats...
I mean you honestly can't get any worse than Tennant dying from radiation. Timelords are supposed to take load of radiation and shrug it off or transfer it to an item. But he has Tennant travel around and visit all his friends before he regenerates....yea...

If they do make the dead doctor a ganger, I think I will rage, I mean it is supposed to be made of the flesh stuff, so how did he start a regen when that is supposed to be exclusive to timelord DNA? I don't know the whole first episode was kinda of bothersome, you'd think his friends would be a bit worried about the fact that if the doctor is dead his Tardis is just sitting around somewhere, but no, no mention of it at all. Also wouldn't River have noticed that he still had his green sonic, whereas the doctor she knows has the red one? You'd think she'd be like oh no this is all wrong.

The Doctor's death will be retconned somehow. We have been told that River is the one to "kill" the Doctor; what that means in the long-run is unknown.

The fact that the Eleventh Doctor who ends up dying has the same face as Matt Smith is interesting.
[small]However, what is the key overrunning aspect of this arc now? THE FLESH.[/small]

The avatars are made of flesh, but the gangers became human I believe, since the gangers didn't need their human controllers but the avatars do. I would think that the gangers copied the Doctor's DNA, the same way it copied 900 years of memories. River can regenerate being only part Time Lord. Maybe the ganger needs to be only part Time Lord to do it.
I didn't like that 1103's TARDIS is just around somewhere but they obviously couldn't tell 907 Doctor that there's a 2nd TARDIS going about. Unless it was destroyed or stolen or hidden or whatnot or if it was the ganger Doctor then he might not have his own and just hitched a lift on a spaceship.
The red sonic green sonic is all very well. But since for River, her death and the Doctor giving her his screwdriver hasn't happened yet for her or the Doctor, then time can be re-written. Which screws with her timeline as technically, the next time the Doctor met her after the Library then he should have given it to her being that their lives are back to front (her words).

THe death of the Doctor doesn't necessarily mean the end of Dr Who.

Quite frankly, I hope he stays dead, although I know perfectly well he won't. I think he has been explored as a character as much as can be done and that he should move on according to previously established rules about regenerations.

A new Dr would be really cool.

They've set it up perfectly for the Ganger Doctor to be the one who actually dies. But knowing Steven Moffat, he'll pull a massive twist and negate the death some other way.

It's one hell of an interesting plot point, but we all know it's not the end of the Doctor.
