When I'm playing Gears of War and Fenix is getting shot up, I don't see that as him taking bullets in the face and then healing in a few seconds, I see it as his luck slowly running out as he's out in the open field of fire, with bullets coming closer, grazing off his armor, until that one actually hits him solidly and drops him down.
That's a FANTASTIC explanation. It makes so much sense out of that mechanic.

"Personally I've always thought, in a realistic game, health should be replaced by a "luck" system. When the game calculates that a bullet is about to hit you, it corrects the trajectory so it doesn't, and you lose a bit of your luck bar. Then when it runs out you finally get hit by a single bullet and go down crying like a big fat girl."

Because it's impossible for two people to have the same idea or come to the same conclusion, right? Go troll somewhere else...

The problem that I find about the health thing, is that nobody finds health management FUN. I don't feel the need to make it a ridiculous contrivance for the sake of "realism". Video games are never going to be 100% realistic. They can be immersive yes, but previous health systems haven't really negatively effected immersion (some may consider regenerating health to be 4th wall breaking, but honestly its just as bad as health packs. And because I have been gaming for a while, I've become used to all these different health systems.)

edit: I apologize for the necro, please delete this thread :/

The OP bought up a point how in fighting games you should be able to target specific body parts to cripple/weaken the enemy. I think thats a really bad idea, for fighters at least. If that was ever implemented it suddenly gives a huge advantage to the person who struck the first blow. Fighters work because a skilled player can pull off a victory even when one hit away from death, it keeps the opponent weary about what the other player might do.

Also to repeat the opinions stated 7 months ago - If it aint broke, dont fix it

Especially when a very similar concept had already been used in a game... [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_in_Arms:_Hell's_Highway#Gameplay]
