Psssh. Like it'll fall into economic ruin. America will invade a country and take their resources before that happens.

Then again, this could spark the light to the already rather full cannon of hate toward America, and cause a war. For a fact, I know most Europeans don't like America on a whole (Note, not Americans. I mean America the country, as in your government, army ect.)

Other countries are in worse positions... why the US to crumble first?
Mainly because the problems started in America. The UK was the first to feel the heat when Northern Rock collapsed, which for the world was the main signal that a recession was on its way.

Admittedly I haven't gone into a lot of detail, but American banks selling off debt to others who sell off the debt again, when the original buyer could never afford to pay it back.

Its pretty much a screwed up mess where everyone owes everyone money, when there is no money to pass around to anyone since money is owed elsewhere, thus causing our current mess.

US won't die, but it's interesting to see it going bit by bit towards socialist economy when that was one of the things they used to fight against. The Asian countries will probably come out strongest from this crisis with China leading the way. It's not like US will fall completely, but in terms of economy it won't be the definitive superpower anymore.

Bush basically decapitated a person(the economy) then said jeez someone should do something about that, and left us to perform CPR on the headless body.
And instead of CPR, we cut the legs off the corpse and then smiled brightly about how its still the republicans fault.

Good work spending trillions within the first 100 days, guys. Lets see if you do so much better than the previous administration you love to hate on so much. Problem is, in a couple of years, you won't have anyone to blame but yourselves.

Teach the USA its place if it gets cut back a bit with this recession, although it will almost certainly recover from this the country as a whole is gradually going downhill anyway that is until they can profit from another world war.

Of course it will carry on. It might take a while, but things will start crawling back up to where they were before and the circle of events will happen all over again, probably.

Well, the US of A has been fat and happy now for 230-some years. I have a bad feeling that it won't survive much longer. But if she can actually pull through, and keep any of the Bush-spawn out of office, I think that she'll be stablized enough to be set forever.

Um..no. We were not "fat and happy" during the Great Depression, Vietnam, etc. This country has had its own hard times and will probably continue to do so

The future of the US will involve the elimination of an economy based on disposable products, planned obsolescence, and excessive money borrowing.

In its place we will see a return to frugality since people don't have as much money anymore and they cannot borrow more than they can repay. This is going to cause a LOT of initial trouble but may have some positive effects in the end.

For example, products will have increased quality because people can no longer afford to buy everything they see like the consumer gluttons we are today. Hard choices will have to be made on what to buy and what not to buy. Only the highest quality products will survive. Nobody will want to waste money on a cheap vacuum cleaner or DVD player that will break in a few months; they will save and wait (*GASP*) to buy the good quality one that will last for many years instead. Nobody will want to spend money on a mediocre movie or video game; they will wait for the really good ones instead. (NOTE: This is already happening http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89587-EA-Chief-Recession-Is-A-Blessing-For-The-Game-Industry!)

When we flush the market of all that garbage, many people who made fortunes on it will go down the drain too. Its going to cause a lot of trouble at first, but we may be better off at the other end of the tunnel because I also think this will bleed over into other, non-commercial areas.

For example, since there are fewer people manufacturing garbage for people to waste excess money on, there will be a stronger drive for people to perform better in school since the market will be more competitive. Maybe we will see the US catch up its lost status in relation to the rest of the world in this area.

This will also probably forcefully deflate the bloated sense of entitlement that many of us have. People won't expect something for nothing anymore and will have to learn to work hard to earn it instead.

I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, here it is. The most powerful nation in the world is now crumbling in economic ruin. Will it pull out of its slump and march on valiantly? Or will it collapse upon itself like the bloated politicians that have come to run it?

Your answers and/or opinions if you please!
It is not going to crumble. In 2013, things will be back to relative normality.

I, personally, have faith in the will and toughness of the people of the United States. The closest this nation has ever come to being torn apart was the American Civil War that started back in 1861, and we pulled through that alright. We also managed to pull through the Great Depression of the thirties and other big recessions in the past (in the late 70s and early 80s, for example,) so I see no reason why we wouldn't be able to do it again. The American people (and human beings as a whole, really) have been notably capable when the chips have been down in the past and times got tough.

Say what you want about who you want, but the blame ultimately lies with the consumer base. Too many people spending more money than they had to spend. Too many people taking bankloans to get their $300,000 dollar home that they really couldn't afford. Did they care? No. They were too stupid to know any better. I knew way too many others back in high school that didn't care about history or economics, that thought it was all a load of nonsense that they could text through on their cell phones or just not pay attention. These are the people that are going to have to deal with this crisis and they're too damn focused on the immediates to look toward the future.

I'm no economics major. I'm no politician. I do, however, believe in the American and the human spirit and will to survive and succeed. Someone'll figure something out.

The depression(yes we are in a depression) is affecting the rest of the world too and America has risen from depressions before. It all goes in cycle we have a depression, the government screws around, a figure like FDR or Ronald Reagan emerges and rallies the nation, we reassert ourselves and eventually recover. Many economists and political annalists say otherwise but they also thought that the Soviet Union would survive.

I'm fairly sure we're doomed.
Hell, most of the world is doomed.
People want to continue doing the same old Reaganesque bullshit of "Just Say No!" and "Reagnomics works!" without really considering what might REALLY help them out. It's like these people have some sort of death wish towards their countries or something.
Are you kidding? Reagonomics have been the best thing since sliced bread and death of Keynes.
