I'm sure i'll have to change my GTX 460 by then :p

Some info from a post i've recently found:

The brief history of modern day VFX starting with the formation of ILM showed how many times key studio members split to form their own companies, but how few of them succeed. The trail is littered with defunct facilities: Boss, Apogee, The Orphanage, Cafe FX?

Facilities aren?t profitable, says Ross, citing the fact that many film companies have started, then closed, their own-in-house effects studios. Disney did just this, closing and re-opening its own facility three or four times.

He lists the issues with VFX production, such as the uncertain workflow and the difficulty in pricing. He bemoans the tax breaks that the Queen (in reality the UK government) gives to home-grown effects facilities. ?It became impossible to bid against the big Soho houses,? he says. (As a side-note, the 20% tax subsidy has an expiration date of March 31, 2012, so things may not be so rosy in London next year.)

Ross also points out the rising cost of labour. The people working on The Abyss were earning in the region of $30K to $40K a year, he says. Those same people will now be earning in the region of $200K to $250K. Despite this, employee retention is still very difficult he remarks.
