As much as I love ND and their games, I honestly don't think U4 is their best work and I'm not sure that they really deserve to win this time, though I think they will. Personally, I would probably give it to Overwatch, which has been an enormous success born out of the ruins of failure.

Last I checked, Blizzard Entertainment is about as close to gaming royalty as you can get; from what "failure" cometh Overwatch exactly?

Overwatch came from the ruins of a new MMO Blizzard had to scrap.

Overwatch is incredibly popular, so It'll probably win something. But i think an essential part of my brain is broken because i can't see the appeal from the times i've played it. Maybe the simplicity is what gives it such fame, but it doesn't pull me into the world at all and i just get distracted by the infinitely more convincing real world. *Shakes fist at marketing gods* You have a lot to answer for!

Other than that, the "trending gamer" award made a part of me crawl off and die in a hole somewhere. Award ceremonies have always been riding a wave of concentrated cringe, gaming awards moreso, and now it has peaked critical mass of cringe upon where the shame causes me to fold eternally inside myself until there is nought more than a hairy black hole devouring all passers by who happen to be going for a nice evening dog stroll in my housecave.

Inside hopefully wins something, but no doubt that will encourage many people eager to use the word "pretentious" with even more confidence while expositing various forms of dismissal.
Eh, i'll pass on viewing the event in favour of stroking my pet macaw for funsies.

Ah, I see. But still, with the phenomenal successes Blizzard already enjoys, I wouldn't say they deserve any particular accolades for righting this one of their many successful ships. And while it may be impressive now, I think after enough clones try and follow suit, Overwatch will eventually peak and blend in.

Playdead on the other hand, a small and introverted indie developer, quietly and humbly released out of nowhere what will amount to one of the more unique and memorable experiences of the ages, and to critical acclaim no less. Though it has its detractors as any game does, Inside is pretty universally appreciated; how else would it make the list with titans like Blizzard, Naughty Dog and id for GOTY?

I know it's all subjective and doesn't really matter at the end of the day, but this reminds me a lot of the college football debacle we go through every season. There's invariably an underdog team that comes out of nowhere and beats a big school and the question becomes "who will the committee put in the bowl games: the big name teams people want to see (read: $$$) or the teams that deserve to be there, the Davids that humbled Goliaths?

I honestly think it's the other way around, Inside is kind-of LESS pretentious since it kind of has a straight-forward plot and intrigue and the kid's not that fragile in order for us to get sympathy as he shows personality when he walks, runs or has to do something.

Hey, as long as the wrong people don't praise it too much, Inside will do fine.

Well yes, I agree that it isn't a useful term in this case, though that hasn't stopped some less than enthused people from using it during and after the review period. A misunderstood and commonly misapplied word that noticeably crops up every now and then as a sort of hand-wave criticism for some stories that do not directly state their intentions and innermost thoughts and desires. There is some irony in those who brandish the word that way though, but it's too early for the brain to mull about these things now.

Oh boy, I forgot that it's award season.

Is there a betting pool for "Game most likely to cause a shitfit if it wins too many awards"?
If there is, I'm putting sure fire money on BF1, Dishonored 2 and Mafia 3 being involved.

Really? I thought the most likely candidates would be:

-Uncharted 4 (whole "it's a great movie, but not a game" argument)
-Overwatch (the whole "overhyped," Blizzard is a media darling, etc. argument)
-Inside ("because Indie=pretentious")
-Firewatch ("because all you do is walk around")
-Pokemon Go ("it's a mobile game, screw mobile games!")

Not that any of these arguments are my own, but I can imagine them popping up.

Fuck this shit. The man hasn't done anything great in twelve years. The only thing that's grown is his ego.
If you had said that last year, I would have fought you on that, but sadly I'm starting to lean towards this side. After re-playing Metal Gear Solid 3 and Lunar Knights, there has been a long time Kojima hasn't made a "great" game that isn't some form of auteur project that gives praise to Hollywood.

So they're successful and regularly put out high quality work, so they don't deserve recognition of said work? Followed by 'eventually everyone will copy their idea, and they'll just be one among many.'

That is some ass backwards logic.

You oversimplify. I?m not saying they don?t deserve recognition for their work; surely the millions they?re raking in (and extra in microtransactions) is objective recognition enough. I?m saying in Overwatch, they delivered exactly what we should expect from an entity of their calibur, size, resources, time, etc. That, to me, is not a ?standout? performance, building on the foundation of popular sameness (it is yet another shooter) and making some tweaks to sell a couple million copies. Billion dollar gaming company creates popular online shooter. Wow. Who?da thunk it?

Inside, on the other hand, is a truly unique experience, built from the ground up over time with limited resources and the minds and hearts of a small group of people truly dedicated to their craft, and their efforts showed in the near-universal critical acclaim of their unforgettable game. In a year, 5 years, 10 years, people will remember Overwatch as a great shooter in a string of shooters; in that same time, people will remember Inside as INSIDE, something you have to experience to understand. THAT, to me, is GOTY material.

So the award is probably going to Overwatch or Uncharted then. I really like how Inside made it on there though. I'd vote for that one myself, but they're obviously never going to let it win.
