I believe I was similarly excited after receiving Sonic & Knuckles one Christmas however many years ago. Now out of curiosity, what game was the kid staring at?

My parents hardly ever get games to my annoyance, and when they do it's never the game I wanted above all others.

Well, for a close one it was when I unboxed a shiny black PS3.

I remember when I was about 7 or 8. I asked for a PS1, and I got a PS2. I only got PS1 games anyway, but I'll never forget opening Final Fantasy VIII and seeing that case.

I lost the game, and bought it again a couple years ago, and I felt the same way again, after all those years.

Starfleet Command II: Empires at War

I spotted it sitting alone and unloved when I went to buy GTA III.

Or rather, had an adult buy it for me since I was under 18. Yet oddly enough I only got age checked AFTER I turned 18. Gits.

I remember buying KOTOR. I was standing in a store, not knowing what game I wanted, when that box art caught my eye. I had never heard of it before, but my mind exploded (I have been a Star Wars fan for many years, I got KOTOR when I was around seven). Best purchase of my life and I made it by accident.

Gears of war (1) limited edition, I got it on Boxing Day for £40 when the normal game was selling for £45. I was already sold from the Mad World trailer, so having my first LE looking like this was terrific:

That is my second favorite box ever right behind the Doom 3 Collector's Edition.

Even tho I've been playing games for 30 years, it's GTA Vice City that springs to mind. I'd already unpacked one at work the day before, read every damn page of the booklet, played some of the soundtrack CDs at work, and was totally hyped. I'd also taken a couple of days off to revel in it.

It'd been a long time since I'd really felt that excitement of a new release, even Cataclysm, despite WOW being a big thing to me, I didn't go to a midnight release, as it would have cost me about £10 more. Just waited a day or so for my mail order to arrive.

I'm going to go with Metal Gear:

.

By the time I had seen this game box, I had already seen Aliens and the Terminator, movies that remain favorites to this day. I assumed that the game was presumably about one or the other. (Lucky for me, someone already placed a Michael Beihn image along side his Metal Gear counterpart.)

And then when I got it home I found it was an isometric game that required stealth, precision and expert timing all of which eluded me as a child. I got the game on the strength of the box and have never been more disappointed.

Post some of the games that you looked foward too more then anything. Lets take a trip down memory lane and return to our childhood. when gaming truly felt better
I'm 30 years old and I've never lost this feeling.

This year after buying Mass Effect 2 I jogged all the way home humming away to myself in excitement, and my god you should have seen me during the final mission... hopping around like a hyperactive 5 year old :D
