I think that either Bioshock 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 2, or Red Faction Guerrilla are all top contenders.

In my mind none of the games really deserve a GOTY, this year I have bought no games from 2009 so far, and I only intend to buy two, maybe three games in the near future.
I'll go ahead and agree with this. The only game I've bought this year is Pokemon Platinum, which obviously won't win any awards. The only games I'm even planning to buy are Modern Warfare 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2 (WOOHOOOOOOO!!!), and MAYBE Halo 3: ODST.

The CoD:MW2 gameplay trailer that ign.com put up didn't particularly impress me.

The heart beat sensor on the gun, the chase on the snowmobiles, it all made it look like it wasn't a Call of Duty game any more, and rather than being modern warfare it was trying to get in to the "I'm a space marine, I carry a big gun" area of gaming that's already taken by so many other titles that I don't care for (Halo, Killzone etc).

I get that they're trying to expand the franchise, but I'm of the opinion that no FPS is ever improved by the addition of rail shooter levels or vehicle levels. The missions in CoD4 and CoD:WaW where you were a gunner in a plane were tolerable, but only just. The tank mission in CoD:WaW on the other hand I found completely unendurable. I didn't feel that it added anything to the game, it wasn't a very fun level, it was easy, and it seemed like it had sort of been tacked together at the last second.

There are definitely games I look forward to that will probably come out pre-Christmas, but so far I would say that the game of the year has been CoD:WaW, but as I'm in the middle of exams and don't have a PS3 I am yet to play inFamous, Prototype or Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Also L4D for best multiplayer and shooter.
What does IGN, gamespot, and Kotaku all have in common? They are all internet sites. They all have info that can be processed faster than say television. SO....if you think use common sense, it would be easy for them because the internet can change anytime they want at a fraction of a second. Television shows on the other hand and live events are different. They are set up weeks ahead of the year and many even occur even before the year ends such as E3 and even Tokyo Game Show. Then you also have Magazines that are printed ahead of time and thus not all games count.

Do you know how many show/websites/magaxines give away the award for Game of the Year?

If Wikipedia is to be believed

* Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (see below)
* British Academy of Film and Television Arts
* Computer Gaming World
* Crispy Gamer
* Destructoid
* Edge
* Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
* Eurogamer
* Games
* GameFAQs (through user polls
* Game Informer
* Gamereactor
* GameSpot
* GameSpy
* GameTrailers
* G-Phoria
* NoobToob
* Giant Bomb
* IGN
* JIVE Magazine
* Kotaku
* Nintendo Power
* PC Gamer
* PC World
* Pelit
* Penny Arcade
* Play
* Spike TV
* X-Play

They also don't have the same opinions either as one website choose another game for another one. So while IGN gave the 2007 away to Super Mario Galaxy, gamespot gave it to COD4: Modern Warfare.

In terms of a standard gaming year some don't give the award to games that come out to late in the year.

I know this because there was some concern as whether some games would make the cut due to them coming out so late, but the game came out in September and thus was clear.

So we are both right....depending on what point of view you take. Remember that websites differ greatly from other media as websites update faster than most print/shows.

Going to have to say Modern Warfare 2.... CoD 4 was awesome and it's back in the hands of good developers... I'm eagerly anticipating release to see how good it is.

I'm really looking forward to Brutal Legend. I think that's gonna be the game that will help everyone to realize that Schafer's a genius.

Empire Total War is my game of 2009 thus far. It's just so immersive and huge

I gotta say that Call of Juarez: Earned in Blood looks like my cup o' tea too.

And I'll jump on the Modern Warfare 2 bandwagon too, although it will never be the same without Capt. Price :(
