For me, there is no single game that got me into gaming culture and made me care about the medium the way I do now. I would have to give most of the credit to Mass Effect 1, and Assassin's Creed 1. Both very flawed games (and neither even being in my personal top 5 games of all time) but both displaying so much potential in narrative and game mechanics, that I really started to want more from the medium.

Super Mario World. The real kicker to that game, I discovered video games besides that one existed! As a kid thats kind of a big deal...

Not a single game. The C64 at a friends house got me into gaming. I found my love for beat`em ups like Double Dragon, jump and runs like Giana Sisters (at the time i didn`t know it was a Mario clone), i played my first Lucasarts adventure Maniac Mansion. There where a lot of other games i really liked Turrican, Barbarian, Mafia, Outrun, Law of the West and others i have forgotten (damn i forgot the name of the shoot`em up with the helicopter and the jeep, sorry).
So this was the beginning of my personal little history about this fun hobby.

I believe it was Pokemon Sapphire. I was too young and didn't really understand the concept of video games before, I remember playing Goldeneye for the N64, but didn't know how to finish levels. Until I played Sapphire, it took me a good 15 tries before I figured out you could even save, which is pretty funny thinking about it. But that game is just a classic for me, really introduced me to the gaming world.

New favorite .gif.

Very first one would have to be Heretic. For those who don't know, it's id Software's follow up to Doom, back in 1994. It was the first shooter I ever played, and it was instantly my favorite game. More than that, my brother, my dad, and I had hundreds of hours of fun playing it together when I was a kid. It made video games a much bigger part of my life.

But the best answer to the question is Bioshock. I was never what I would call a gamer; I played games when I could, but I was always years behind and never cared about the culture around games. After I played Bioshock 2 years ago that changed, and that is why I am on a game website responding on this forum.

Crash Bandicoot 2, what a wonderful game. I never had a memory stick for the PS1 so I played it for long sessions when I was young.

Pong.

No, really.

I've been around, literally, since the dawn of gaming and had Pong on the Atari 2600 which was one of the first consoles.
Haha! Me too. Then Super Pong afterwards. Ah, those fragile paddle controllers. Yar's Revenge or Pitfall were probably my fave games of the 2600 era but that was what got me into gaming and Ive followed it faithfully every since.

Final Fantasy VII. I had owned a NES and a Genesis before and played Mario, Mortal Kombat, etc. But I had no idea video games were capable of such stories and worlds. FFVII blew my mind. To this day I still play any good JRPG I can get my hands on.

no Knights of The Old Republic is what did it, played at a friends house when it came out for about 2 days straight, even now i still play it just to make sure it isnt all just rose colored glasses still great

Behold: The Magnavox Odyssey 2, My first gaming system, and the first game I ever played. And the only one who's name I remember.

It's glorious, no?

But the game that REALLY got me into gaming as a main passtime was most likely Super Mario 3.

My first game was Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Heroes of the Lance and it was horrid. The first game I played that didn't make me want to take a bat to my NES was Super Mario Bros. However, I'd say the game that got me "in to gaming" came many, many years later in the form of Secret of Mana for the SNES. That was the game that made me jump from "This is something to do when I'm bored and it's raining." to "This is something I enjoy doing."

Pokemon Stadium was the game that made me want, and subsequently obtain, an N64.

From then on it was Super Mario 64, Mario Kart and Ocarina of Time that kept me hooked until the Gamecube came out. Since then the ball has kept on rolling.

I would have to say Doom 2. I played some games before that, but they were not as significant for me. My first games were really old, one of them was Karateka (I was dying over and over to that frigging gate at the end of level 2) on a Pravetz.
