Well for me, the first game that ever 'blew me away' enough that I wanted to do more than just play casually and wanted to seriously get into games was still Halo: Combat evolved.
I loved the action, the cinematic story telling and the general atmosphere. Seriously, it's one of those games that I just loved and couldn't get enough of.
High five! I grew up with the Halo series and loved it.For a growing child's sake, there weren't many swears and the blood was like marinara sauce, so I was fine. It brought me into a world which led me to here, so its a game I had to thank.

The origional Gauntlet for the NES is what is set in my mind, so I will go with that. But I grew up with a NES in my room since prettymuch birth, and a SEGA Genesis in my parents uh...spot. (They didnt have a bedroom back then, but a bed in the living room)

My introduction to gaming was, I think, Atari's Combat.

What sealed the deal for my gaming addiction was the original "King's Quest" on my uncle's computer shortly thereafter. The graphics were only slightly less-crappy than the Atari's, but it had a story! My five year old mind had little difficulty with "get carrot", "open door", "look down" etc., so I played the heck out of it for the longest time. I didn't beat it until years later, when it was released on the Roberta Williams Anthology.

Ah, dusty old memories.

Halo: Combat Evolved
Honestly, that game got me hooked on gaming for life. I had owned videogames before that on my second hand Sega Megadrive II. I loved them dearly, but I was never really excited about new games coming out, developers doing different things or anything like that.

I can credit many games in my early development, especially on an old Mac I had. Bubble Trouble, Crystal Quest, Nanosaur, and Bugdom were better than any mac-exclusive games that you can run on a modern system. Also, Pokemon Blue and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on my GameBoy Colour.

Ocarina of Time. I played videogames before that, but I would just sort of turn them off and then not really care past that. Most of my super nintendo games I just perpetually played the first 3 levels of with no will to progress because it just got harder and I didn't understand the concept of challenge (and at that point some games still used the password system.) Ocarina was the first game that made me give a shit about continuing. I wanted to see what was going to happen next. I wanted to save hyrule. It was the first game that actually made me care about the story, so I would say that was the turning point.

Probably Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. It was my first MP game that i played for a long time. CoD was the next one. I'd say they got me into it more so than I ever was before. Though, I could say the Crash Bandicoot series as I played almost every game in that series. Its hard for me to define when I can consider myself a gamer in the full sense of the word.

I was cursed. The first game I ever sat down to play was the original Mario Bros.

The first Flight combat game I ever had was TIE Fighter.

The first console (and FPS) game I ever had was Goldeneye. Yes, Goldeneye.

It's no wonder nothing lives up to my standards anymore, really.

The game that made me a gamer has to be Thief:The Dark Project.
Huge non-liniar levels, fantastic story and the best gameplay. I could sneak around in the levels for hours trying to get the last piece of loot, without killing any guards or servants.
