oblivion, I actually cared about the game world and could stroll around with no other purpose than relax and look at the scenery.

In my mind it became art when you were happy to look at it for longer than the art on your wall. well after the game part was over.
Agree!

I can think of games that I may describe as quite artsy, as well as game that isn't.

I mainly view games as entertainment.
Isn't that enough?
Well movies, music, and books are entertainment, but they can still be art.
I think what makes art is if it can move you emotionally.

portal..................but let me ask you something..........WHY DO ANOTHER FUCKING GAMES AS ART POST!!!!!
Let me ask you something......did you happen to notice the date on which I joined this forum? I'm not going to go through all the pages of back-logged discussions to make sure I'm not retreading something that has been discussed already. If you think it's redundant, then do yourself the favor and skip over the discussion altogether.

The Resident Evil remake on the GCN. The lighting hallways/corridors and dried blood here and there made me realize how much detail people put in good games.

Well, it's worth remembering that there isn't really any kind of actual defenition to what art is, but by your definition, sure.

Gosh, I don't even know why I'm posting in a forum at three in the morning.
My brain is just bearly functional right now.

I suppose that games I regard as art are games that can make me forget that I'm playing a game.
Games that let me emmerse myself in a world other than our own and make me feel that I'm really out on a grand epic adventure.

Like say for example zelda.

sorry, im just tired of these threads. plus this whole thing started because SOME movie critic doesn't think much of video games, or indeed the gamers themselves. i think of video games as a form of art, but i'd like people to forget about it and move on.

I would have to say Bioshock, myself. The world, the characters, the setting, all of it just rolled together and created a perfect storm for me.

I'm not entirely sure games *are* art actually. Not art in the traditional sense anyway. But if you're asking which games provoked emotion comparable to a good movie or book, then I'd have to agree with Furburt:

The Longest Journey.

It was at that point, when I had finished it, that I realised I had been affected by it as much as or even more than any film, book or artwork I had seen.

Yeah - At first it was rather mainstream, then when it started on the actual story it really got good.

Killer7 hands down. My English teacher in Grade 11 told me that video games cannot be artistic or thought provoking; i told him to go look up Killer7 and he told me the next day it was an exception.

LittleBigPlanet caused me construct things in my mind during math class.

Ruler tilted at 90 degrees on book, with string attached and motor bolt, connected to...

Yeah, I failed Geometry.

Well to begin with I didn't make this discussion in any response to "Some Movie Critic" (Who happens to be the most respected movie critic of all time), but instead just a place to chat about games that moved us as players.

I could care less if people think games are art or a wasteland devoid of creativity.

On a petty note however...I don't understand why anyone would give weight to a man who HATED Boondock Saints I and II.

As much as it is easy, that game had so much attention to detail just scattered all over it, from Link's eyes moving and his facial expressions to the way the waves flow and crash against the shore or the way the leaves falling in the forest sway in the wind, every sound was placed perfectly.

Even if you hate the art style, replaying it today I can really respect how much effort was put into making such a gorgeous game
