For me, it's a tie between the original Prince of Persia for the NES and Day of the Tentacle.

I would say spyro 2. I cant remember how I found out about it, but I'm glad I did because it was an amazing game.
Spyro 2 was the one with Moneybags and the silly tiger looking thing etc? :)

Old obscure Text Adventures on a FROTZ Machine. Ahh, good times. Then I got a Mega Drive and a copy of Streets of Rage and the rest, they say, is history.

Sonic 1 and 2 started me off, then the Crash Bandicoot series kept my inner gamer fed until I started buying any game I could get my grubby paws on.

Though I've also played games since before Windows and FPSes, the games that really hooked me like you describe came around the late '90s, such as Starcraft, Diablo 2, Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, Age of Empires 2, Deus Ex, and probably more.

Old NES adventure games like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. Mega Man games also helped fuel that game addiction lol, good ol' Mega Man 3.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas for the original PlayStation. It was incredibly difficult, but that may be my five-year-old self talking.

Too difficult to narrow it down to just one. Here are the ones that have kept me hooked through the years

Donkey Kong
Zork
Pools of Radiance
Might and Magic III - V
Metroid
Contra
Heavy Barrel
Doom
Quake
Myst
Final Fantasy VII
Ratchet & Clank
Diablo
Riven
WoW

Obviously I've played others but those are the ones that "kept pulling me back in". ;)

edit: Pitfall, Asteroids, Adventure, Zaxxon, Ladybug, Pac Man etc... lol

The first game I ever played was Super Smash Bros (original) and its what got me started asking my parents for video games. Thats how I got my hands on Pokemon Gold. I played that more than any other game I own.

I grew up on Call of Duty. I somewhat regret it. But it had positive side. ^_^
That was my first "real" game. That and the Sims. I mean, I played like Mario when I was younger, but my first real game that wasn't just a casual game was Call of Duty. I loved it.
LOL nice. Call of duty come in second. Half life is in first. Third is Halo. But that's my opinion.

Oh dear... I don't know if I'm old, or if you're all kids... If you "grew up" on Call of Duty or Metal Gear Solid, you must be like... what? Nine? Oh well, I grew up on NES games that I guess most of you have barely heard of (they should teach this stuff in school -- it's part of our cultural heritage!). You know, games like Super Mario Bros 1-3 and the Legend of Zelda.
