We've all been there, I'm pretty sure alot of us have left some games unfinished for our own reasons, so why don't we gather round and share some of our tales of incomplete ventures! Bonus question: what games are you currently playing that you haven't gotten round to finishing?

Obviously I'll start us off.

Games I never finished:

Tomb Raider Underworld: I was on the final boss fight, where you have to scale some huge tower thing with rotating platforms and I'm guessing once you reach the top you fight the crazy bat woman thing thats been blasting fireballs at you the whole time you're scaling it. I never could figure out how to scale the damn thing and just ran around beating down skeleton with Mjolnir.

Tony Hawk's Proving Grounds: meh, lost interest around the time when you have to crash a bunch of Bam Margera's sets and out skate him or something.

Final Fantasy X: Just came from beating Seymour in the ice temple place thing which i can't remember too well (I played the game back in '03) and after that you had to make a getaway but your progress gets halted by some monks from the temple... me and my sis couldn't beat em because our team was horribly unbalanced (we might have made Auron(?) the front man too much) and that yeti thing wouldn't go down so we gave up!

Ghost Hunter: I don't know if anyone even remembers this game, but yeah, never got round to beating the kraken thing because I borrowed the game from a friend and gave it back after a week (which was our agreed time limit for how long I could keep the game).

Ape Escape 2:... I LOST THE DISC! Oh god Why!? That game was beautiful!

Rayman: Curse you old school platforming and you're inhuman difficulty! Still loved that game though.

Games I'm currently playing and haven't finished:

Kingdom Hearts [DDD]: Fighting Xemnas and the other douche, who seem to have a bad case of bullet hell fever and keep spamming unavoidable screen filling attacks. Also the fact that the side menu to scroll is assigned to the D-pad doesn't help when you wanna heal up and keep moving.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown: Still kinda steamed the council gave me an F (might be because America dropped out, they were in the red for 15 days and just had to wait 3 more for a satelite but nooooo), so I'm taking a break from that.

That's all I got for now, your turn!

I only really have two N64 games that I never beat that I played a whole lot when I was a kid. Those two are as follows.

Legend of Zelda: Majora's mask: I played this game a lot as a kid and I still love it to this day but I could never beat it. It was that last temple that I could never figure out even with the strategy guide. So maybe I'm just an idiot but I could never beat it but I do want to beat it at some point in my life.

Jet Force Gemini: God damn I love this game but fuck me is it hard. I never had it when I was a kid but I played and liked it. I got it last year for the first time and I was playing it for a day or two but couldn't beat some of the bosses. Strange thing is that I remember beating these bosses before but perhaps I am just not used to the N64 controller enough now to be as good as I was.

I recently finished Far Cry 2 after starting it about a year and a half ago and getting hoplessly bored. Turns out I was near the end so just finished that.
Littlebig planet. What can I say, I haven't played it since I bought it.
Lego Harry Potter 1-4. Such a boring game.

Hmm lets see.

Final Fantasy 12. This was quite a few years back. My sister was playing it, but then she went away, so i played it for her, completing quests and stuff, collecting zodiacs and stuff, pretty much arriving at the last stage. However i stopped there and waited for her to finish it when she came back, but when she did, she couldn't be bothered and since i hadn't played it in awhile i couldn't be stuffed either.

IF i think of others i'll edit and add later

Got a few that I always mention in these threads.

Jak and Daxter 2
Could never get used to the controls, which made a turrent section impossible for me to get past. Would've struggled with it, but the lack of decent check points made it a huge pain in the ass.

Jak 3
Weeeei. Racing. Hooray... Fuck it.
Had to do the same races over and over again to beat them and every time I did I figured that the game would finally start for real, but instead all I got were more races.

Yakuza 3
Thought the game would be more about fighting and less about caring for annoying orphans. Will possibly attempt it again someday, though I doubt it.

Brütal Legend
TPS RTS? NOPE. I already disliked regular RTS games.

Current game I haven't gotten around to finishing yet is FEAR 3. There's a robot fight that I kept dying on and the game wasn't exactly compelling enough for me to be arsed with it. Gonna attempt it again later.
Probably have over 50 other games only on my Steam account that I started and quit mid-game. Never finished the vast majority of my PS1/PS2/GC games either. It wasn't until achievements/trophies came that I begun working towards actually beating the games.

Most of my games I own (and I own a lot) I have never beaten. There's a fun website called the "Backloggery" that helps you keep track of games you haven't completed yet.

I tend to be somewhat of a completionist, I want to experience everything the game has to offer when I play it so in most games when I know I'm close to the end, I quit the main quest altogether and begin trying to tie up all the side quests, this doesn't usually apply to games like The Elder Scrolls or Fallout or anything very open world since I usually do multiple playthroughs of those, but in many games like Final Fantasy I tend to stop everything and try to do all the side-quests available.

Games I haven't finished:

Amnesia: Dark Descent (got tired of forced scares)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (it gets really stupid about midway in)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (it gets really stupid about ten minutes in)
Dishonored (doing a Let's Play burned me out on it real hard)
Dead Space 2 (the final sequence just got on my nerves too much)
Dragon Age: Origins (apparently it's very easy to build a character wrong and get very stuck)
Duke Nukem Forever (for obvious reasons- i.e. it sucked)
Homefront (bleh)
Resident Evil 5 & 6 (got about twenty minutes into each; why do I keep getting these games?)
They Bleed Pixels (I didn't know it only supports the XBox controller)
The Void (too difficult to find the resources you need to stay alive later in the game)
World of Goo (I like the game; just not THAT much)

Games I haven't even started yet:

Alice: Madness Returns
Batman: Arkham City
Dead Island
Just Cause 2
Metro: Last Light
Papa & Yo

It's a good thing I buy the majority of my games on sale, or I'd likely be broke by now.

Besides FFX-2, which I took back after playing for two hours, the only other game that I haven't finished is Far Cry 3.

I got really frustrated by the auto-save feature, went and replayed Fallout 3 instead, and now that I'm done with it, I don't seem to have any real interest in putting FarCry 3 in the disc drive.

Dragon Quest 8 on the PS2. Not a bad game, exactly, but good lord, it just goes on forever.

A lot, I have a bad habit of getting to the final boss and quitting. Everything has been revealed and the ending is predictable from that point so I move on to something new.

I never finished Dead Island, I never got very far in Dead Island. The whole co-op thing means you can't play it unless everyone is available and feeling like playing it. You can play it anyway but it's obviously made for multiplayer and you get shouted at if you're ahead in the story. So I never got very far with it as we all got bored of it very quickly. The gameplay was awful and repetitive, in early levels there didn't seem like there was much difference between the player characters and now it sits on a shelf, gathering dust.

Even though it's a bit confusing, I've always found Stone Tower Temple a lot easier than Great Bay Temple. I only know my way around that place after playing through it so many times. :p Definitely try again at some point, the ending of Majora's Mask is pretty awesome.

I remember not beating Jet Force Gemini too. If I recall, if you accidentally kill any of the teddy bear people you are supposed to collect, you can't continue. I forget, but that is why I didn't beat it.

OT: Demon's Souls, never could finish it.

Yeahhh I have a long list. I might see if I can remember all of them ...

Final Fantasys IV through to XII (only Finished X and X-2, discounting XI)
Legend of the Dragoon (even though that game is THE BOMB and I bought a second copy just to finish it ... I even got to the penultimate boss fight)
Just Cause 2
Game of Thrones (the RPG)
GTA3, VC, SA, IV
Dark Souls
Rouge Legacy
Saints Row the Third
Plants vs. Zombies
AC2
Path of Exile
Torchlight 2
Total War Shogun 2
TES Oblivion & Skyrim
SC2:HotS
Magicka
BF:BC2
Bioshock 2
LIMBO (have seen a full playthrough though)
Sniper Ghost Warrior 2
SPAZ
C&C Red Alert/Retaliation (without cheats >_> [hey I was 11 cut me some slack])
Timesplitters 2
.... There's even more but I can't find my box of ~60 PS2 games right now.

EDIT: I probably should have posted the list of games I know I have finished, since it'd certainly be shorter

Ok that's going to be quite a list...
-Red Dead Redemption: Booooooooring.
-Sonic Heroes: Fucking special stages
-Sonic '06: Fucking train level. Among other things.
-Persona 3: Fuck you Nyx
-Final Fantasy X: Got to the 3rd battle with Seymore (or however you spell his name), cheap-ass SOB.
-LoZ: Skyward Sword: Hard to say really. I actually really enjoyed the boss fight with Ghirahim in the first dungeon despite the fact that I lost because it was exactly the sort of heart pounding battle that I like in a video game. It's just that everything else was so tedious.
-Mega Man X 1-5: Gave up at various parts.
-Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Don't know, I guess I just moved on to other games
-Dark Cloud 2 (aka Dark Chronicle): Got all the way to the final boss and was one hit away from beating him. Unfortunately I had only rented the game and had to bring it back. Never got the chance to rent it again.
-Dragon Quest V: I'm right at the end of the game, but the trek to get to the final boss leaves the party with nothing left to actually fight him, so I have no idea how I'm supposed to beat him.
-Diablo: I've seen the ending while playing Battle.net, but I've not actually beaten it myself.
-Sonic and the Black Knight: I actually enjoyed the gameplay of this game, but after you beat the titular "Black Knight" which *spoiler* is not the end of the game, it just becomes tedious.
-Magicka: Some of those boss fights are nearly impossible and trying to string together magic combos in a high intensity boss fight is like trying to crochet while playing dodge ball.
-GTA 3 & Vice City: See Red Dead Redemption. Sure the novelty of fucking prostitutes for health and then killing them and driving cars recklessly around is fun at first, but once that wears off it's boring as hell.
-Star Trek: Legacy: Couldn't get past that one Next Gen mission where you're supposed to protect those planets from flying core fragments. If there's a trick to that I'd love to know what it is.
-Metroid: Other M: Got to the goddamn Queen Metroid. Again if there's a trick to beating her I'd love to know what it is.
-Resonance of Fate: Got to the stupid dungeon where you're supposed to protect the stupid statue.
-Metroid Prime 3: Corruption: Got to the first Boss, that big Dinosaur thing with the 3 orbs. Fought it several times before getting fed up with it. Didn't help that I had to turn the sensitivity all the way down before the game was even playable.
-Spider-Man: Web of Shadows: Got sick of being Luck Cages *****. So when the hell does the actual plot kick in?
-A shit tonne of NES games: Nintendo hard, need I say more.
There's probably more, but that's all I can think of ATM.

Records of agrest war:zero. I can't wrap my head around the combat.

Resonance of fate. I can't wrap my head around the combat.

Wild arms . God that game is slow and boring . I really liked all the other ones though.

Metroid Other M. God that game is bad.

Maworld. I regret buying this game as soon as i got home. Wasn't worth the 10$ i spent..

Last story. Got to the last boss and stopped caring. I should finish this.

That's about it . I have a rule that once i start a game i have to finish them . Those are the only exceptions. Other than last story, i don't really care about them

I've got an embarrassingly long backlog but perhaps the biggest one for me is Red Dead Redemption. I think the game is fantastic but I always feel daunted by its size to ever really invest time in it. Despite that though, I know it's a fantastic game and if I properly immersed myself in it I'd probably adore it.

Final Fantasy 13.

"l'Cie can't talk".

30 hours later.

A l'Cie talks. Even though their inability to talk was a huge part of the plot.
I've put up with the game's bordering empty combat system, Crystarium, and Vanille.. and I get a game that can't even support its own horribly written, hilariously stereotypical plot where nothing happened.

I just sat and laughed at the TV until I stomped by XBOX into submission.

And Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. That is, I started playing the game when it came out, and only beat the save game last night. That safe file has went unredeemed for about 12 years. I'm sorry for leaving you alone.

Off the top of my head, Metro 2033.
This is solely because of that completely bullshit section with the amoebas, which I'm sure anyone who has played the game and finished it or at least gotten stuck in the same spot will know exactly what I'm talking about so I don't have to elaborate further.

Weird, I found Nyx really easy. If you replay the game and keep taking a Persona of your choosing to the arcade at the mall over and over again, you can max out all of its stats. And thus, I killed Nyx by shooting at it with a bow for about 20 turns.

Interestingly enough, I only didn't finish Final Fantasies:

FFX-2 because it, while maybe (MAYBE) being good game by itself, bastardized Yuna, blitzball and everything else I liked in FFX. Unacceptable!

Also, FFXII and XIII. Former because I could not care about half of the cast (would have been a lot better if Bash was the MC, or the pirate guy) and I did not like battle mechanics. Later had over-simplified RPG system, only one good character (Sazh) and kind of a bad story.
