Turn offs from GameStop:

Crappy Trade in Values
being the middleman
Shameless promotion of Edge Card and GameInformer
Employees are meant to sell you games, no such thing as gaming encyclopedia.

I've always been curious. Why do people hate GameStop so much?
They cant hate it too much, seeing as it is the only respectable, large game retail store.

My girlfriend was coaxed into buying the Acrade version of the 360.

SO while it is true, they generally will be pretty cool about that stuff.

Like the guy at my local game stop refused to sell me Two Worlds because "this game is straight up awful, bro"

he was right.

Because a used fallout 3 is 54.99, 49.99 new at wal-mart. Its a giant scam, trade ins and such...
Its like a hobby shop everything is 15% more just because.

Also the sales staff likes to dump crappy games on people. Its their job I know but still sucks.
EDIT2, the pre order craze, I know most game stores do this but games will never never never sell out. If they do sell out for some odd reason, then I promise you Target, best buy, or Wal-mart has them in stock.

I like my local gamestop.

I've actually had them point games out to me that suck and are awesome, plus, they are the only ones who are willing to shoot the shit about the stuff they sell out of all the places I've been to.

Not saying I personally dislike gamestop, but type "zero originality gamestop" into google and click video (they've all been removed from youtube) and that's pretty much the logic behind it... either that or it's just cool to hate corporations with money.

I've got a pretty good rapport going with the my local Game stop clerks. Good ole Destroyer of Hopes and Dreams telling 10 year old kids Moms not to get them GTA IV. Good times.

ZeroOriginality nails it. Yes, there are good GameStops out there, but for the most part you can do infinitely better with small businesses and online.

For those of you attacking GameStop critics on the basis that "It's a business and needs to make money," we're not contesting that. Yes, it's a business, and yes, it needs to make money. We, as consumers, "need" reduced prices and good service. Small shops and online retailers offer those. GameStop doesn't (universally for the former and generally for the latter). There's nothing wrong with them wanting to make money, but there's also nothing wrong with me pointing out to others that there are dramatically better options for where to spend money.

Unless you've got a virtually destroyed disk and want to recoup some of the loss, there is no reason to ever walk into a GameStop.

The only major complaint I have about Gamestop is trade in values, so I simply do that elsewhere. All of the people at the stores both in my hometown and at college have been knowledgeable and helpful.

They can open new games and play them at home, then put them back in the case and sell it as new.

Also the bonus items you get for preordering are "while supplies last" IE we dont have many AND we have a problem with employee's taking the preorder stuff home for free.
Are you fucking joking? I would love get a job at GameStop just so I could play those new games and take random junk home for free.

You guys need to focus less on the negative and more on the positive, and maybe a get job at GameStop so you can capitalize on these advantages. In other words, think from an employees POV.

Everyone hates the store because of the bad service.
The never ending cycle... but which came first, the bad service or the hatred of Gamestop?

I haven't had bad service at my local gamestops and had no major problems with them in the past

...

of course, since I've just posted this, I will find that my pre-ordered copy of Dragon Age: Origin will come without the special DLC stuff they're offering ... Such are the rules of 'Irony'

Bad service can be remedied by providing good service in the face of customer disgust. Maybe you'll even sway a customer's - or two - opinion.

Very true, I wouldn't argue with you there. But my point was about the paradoxical nature of the statement, more a joke than anything else.

I like Gamestop -occasionally-. It can be a good place to get games, since there usually aren't many options, especially if you want older (read: ps2 non-greatest hits) titles. However, I get annoyed at some of their prices. For example, I was looking to buy a new DS game a while back. The "new" copy (which was opened, btw, but I'll let that slide for now) was $34.99 and the used copy was $29.99 (USD). Five lousy dollar difference? That's it? Nevermind the fact that I wouldn't even be getting a sealed copy if I bought the new one. Any opened game should be sold as used, even if it's never been played, but they seem to disagree.

Also, their trade-in prices can be pretty ridiculous sometimes. They give far less than a game is worth and mark it up a ton when they resell it (see my example of used vs new earlier). I remember when I was looking to buy Pokemon FireRed earlier this year, a 5 or so year old GBA game. Their price was $30 for it. I straight up said no at first, but of course, I had to eventually fork it over if I wanted the game. I looked at the one other used game store near here and they didn't have it, and I had no way of buying it online at the time. There just aren't many other gaming stores out there, so the best I can do is ***** and complain about it, and buy at my discretion.

As far as employees go, a few of them have been sarcastic towards other customers (not me personally), but they're friendly for the most part. I've only been simply asked if I wanted to pre-order something, never pressured into it.

I realize the goal of a business is to make money, but I think a line needs to be drawn at the point of ripping customers off.

I've only bought from them at two or three separate occasions, and then it was solely older, previous generation games, so I haven't had the experience of bad service (actually, the only time I've actually talked to an employee, he enlighted me to the fact that I could get one game free since I had bought two of them)..

I guess it has something to do with their service (elsewhere) and their pricing policy of buying used "new" games for half of what the customer bought it for, but then still sells them at full price.
