Well, obviously you should melee it if you happen to be close enough, but since I tend to go with either the auto-shotgun or the pump shotgun, one or two shots usually gets rid of the thing, and I'm often just far enough out of range when they get pounced on that I can shoot it, but not melee it.
Of course, I can pick and choose my teammates for maximum efficiency, whereas many people go for random matches online. So I never run into that kind of problem.
Reflecting on that, I believe I once shot a Hunter while it was pouncing on me. I was surprised to have done that, given that I'm not all that good at that game (though the Director seems to love me...).
