Ok... so we have a mentally retarded 16 year old with a deformed body of a new born? How the fuck is that a miracle? Its horrible if you ask me.
she has not been diagnosed with mental retardation or a deformed body. but then again maybe you with your obvious knowledge in the medical field can prove doctors around the world wrong?

if you'd have any real knowledge in the field you'd see the potential in a case like this.

Congrats for only reading the first page, guys.

In her first six years, Brooke went through a series of medical emergencies from which she recovered, often without explanation. She survived surgery for seven perforated stomach ulcers. She suffered a brain seizure followed by what was diagnosed as a stroke that weeks later left no apparent damage.

At 4, she fell into a lethargy that caused her to sleep for 14 days. Then, doctors diagnosed a brain tumor, and the Greenbergs bought a casket for her.

"We were preparing for our child to die," Howard Greenberg said. "We were saying goodbye. And, then, we got a call that there was some change; that Brooke had opened her eyes and she was fine. There was no tumor. She overcomes every obstacle that is thrown her way."
The kid isn't just mentally retarded and physically deformed. She's indestructible.

...Okay, maybe not, but even if she was just mentally retarded and physically deformed, she'd be that for no adequately explained reason.

I say we take a sample of her DNA, clone her, research the clone, and wait 100 years to see what happens.

I'm honestly not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, a good part of our perception of age comes from physical developments, while on the other, the degredation of DNA and the body's ability to repair itself after a certain point cause what we recognize as old age.

Actually, human beings probably have the longest period of dependance of all mammals.

She's either an elf, a heartbreaking tragedy of genetic randomness, or the result of pedo-bear's genetic manipulation research.

Again, I recommend waiting 100 years while studying her DNA to figure out the approximate lifespan and genetic code.

Not that people should be immortal. Oh, no, we're going to have to remove people in a couple decades. The problem will only increase with people who don't age.

That sounds horrible, if I were the parents I would have killed her a long time ago.
Shut up, it's not like she's in continuous pain and suffering. There would be no mercy behind that. Stupid comment.
I'm sorry but who made you the judge on what's right or wrong? She's not growing at all and is mentally retarded, I can only imagine the hell she must go through each day.
Brooke weighs 16 pounds and is 30 inches tall. She doesn't speak, but she laughs when she is happy, and she clearly recognizes the people around her. She has three sisters: Emily, 22; Caitlin, 19; and Carly, 13. All three are bright, active and of normal size and development. They say that Brooke has ways of expressing herself like the teenager she is.

"She looks like a 6-month-old, but she kind of has a personality of a 16-year-old," Caitlin said. "Sometimes we joke about how she rebels."
Sounds like some hell alright. -_^

Incidentally, I'm just curious, is it the general oddness of the case that's caused you to have such an extreme reaction? Or do you consider it a mercy for all abnormal persons to be put to death to free them from their 'obvious' living hells?

And, as I quoted, the girl is not stated to be unhappy, in fact quite the opposite. (Unless you think the article is lying or the family, or indeed, that no-one can know what's really going on in the girl's head.)

Granted, the condition is not something I'd wish on myself or anyone else, but at the same time, I don't believe it warrants the death sentence you and others seem to be imposing on her.

Having read all four pages of the article, I have come to realize that everything mentioned here was already considered by the people involved over the course of this child's life. Except the mercy killing. And my crazy theories. No one involved in the girl's life is stupid enough to think of either.

Just because she doesn't mature doesn't necessarily mean she's not going to age, right?

I mean, we're talking as if she's frozen in time, but it must be a hormonal growth issue. I'm as hopeful for a fountain of youth as anyone, but I don't think this is it. We're just talking about someone who's "developmentally retarded" in the physical sense.

But hey, I'm not a medical science type. I could easily be wrong.

As for the baby, the best we can hope is to try and research this anomaly, they should start by checking the family trees or something...
Judging by her problem, I'd say start with the family bush.
*facepalm* That was so bad that it was good.

This is downright impossible!

I'd say send her off for medical research! That's right.
Send her off for research, so we can learn about this. Much valuable knowledge can stem from her being studied. Possibly even a cure.

She's going to die as a "child" anyways, might as well make something out of her lifespan.
WE WILL MAKE SCIENCE WITH THIS BABY!
Hahaha Ixion reminds me of Burke from Aliens.

So the majority of posters here just read the first post and then write a reaction?

in an attempt to get you all to read more:

"geneticist Maxine Sutcliffe chronicled a baffling range of inconsistencies in Brooke's aging process. She still has baby teeth at 16, for instance. And her bone age is estimated to be more like 10 years old."

"Howard Greenberg recalled the follow-up visit to the endocrinologist. "We took her back in six months, and the doctor looked at us and said, 'Why didn't you give Brooke the growth hormones?' And I said, 'We gave Brooke the growth hormones. We gave her everything you told us to do.' And Brooke didn't put on a pound, an ounce; she didn't grow an inch."

"The Greenbergs are fascinated by the promise that a scientific breakthrough may stem from Brooke, whose own life is governed by the most basic elements: food and shelter; a family's love; and their ability to see in her far more than meets the eye, having come to terms with the prospect that she will never grow up. "

I do know parents that would have rather had this kid than the grown teens they manage today.

I wonder what would happen if they managed to crack open whatever floodgate is holding back her growth. Would she have gained a few extra years - technically speaking - in her lifespan by not developing for so long physically, or would she pass on at a normal age and just always look younger than she was?

On a more humorous note, imagine being the guy that gets to card her when she buys alcohol looking like an eight year old.

Are you Welsh?
Cookie if anyone gets the reference.
Yay, I get a cookie :)

Anyway, maybe her insides are aging. So she could have a 16 year old heart or something :/

If she doesn't live longer then it doesn't really matter. I'll wait until she's a 150 year old teenager before I judge...scratch that.
