Personally, I still want a conclusion (or continuation) to the story. I'm not holding my breath or anything, but I'm pretty sure I would buy the next installment within the Half-Life series - if it actually continued the story, that is...

I mean, it's not like Half-Life: Ep. 2 was the last thing we saw of the Half-Life universe. Remember Portal 2? The hangar of the Borealis? Valve might be letting us wait, but at the very least they haven't forcefully avoided any mention or references to the games. I'm not sure what shape or form the next installment of the series will take, but even after a decade, I still have some questions I wouldn't mind getting an answer to.

That said, with all the time that has passed, I can't bring myself anymore to be either hyped or pissed.

I've taken to taunting my best friend with the knowledge that Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development and Half Life 3 isn't.

Ain't I a stinker?
That's pretty hilarious.

I don't think Half Life 3 will ever come out. But if it does, I look for Valve to implement an awesome new gameplay feature to tempt those who have swore off it because they are smart like that. (That may even be the reason why they even bothered depending on how unique the gameplay feature is.) I think Steam keeps them busy and until it has real competition, I don't look for them to look at making games anymore when they can just sell games as an impartial party. "Impartial Party" is key there. I think having them make games is a risky move for them with Steam in the power position in digital distribution it currently holds.

I'll play it if it comes out, no doubt about it, but I'm not going to be too arsed if it doesn't see the light of day. I've enjoyed Half-Life 2 and it's Episodes but they're far from some of the best games I've ever played.

Man, episodic gaming is the future! ...Guys? Hello...? Did we forget what that meant somewhere along the way?

As an outsider to HL (played a few hours of Orange Box) Valve just seems really scummy over this affair. You can't have a huge cliffhanger and then not talk about the next game FOR YEARS while your fanbase freaks the duck out. They know people have wanted it for years. It's gotten to the point where HL3 is slowly becoming the next Duke Nukem. Let your fans move on, tell them it's in development or tell them you aren't making it.

Also: Duck these Captchas. How many more adds can you serve me Escapist. Jesus Christ is anything on this site not monetized? Are we going to get badges sponsored by Mountain Dew or EA? /rant over

Right now, my thoughts are that it would be nice to play Half-Life 3, or really, anything that would wind up the Half-Life story but I am definitely beyond the point where I actually care whether or not it comes out. The Half-Life series is really from a completely different era of gaming than the one we are in. If the third installment came out now, it would either seem incredibly archaic to most with health and shields that can only be recharged by collecting pickups and alt-fire modes on it's weapons, or a game where your HEV suit energy recharges if you hide for enough and you have QTEs for taking down aliens (or are they interdimensional beings!?)/soldiers if you can get the drop on them.

I don't see why the OP didn't just use the poll function built into the forums (well, considering how often they break...) as I don't trust outside links, especially on April 1st.

That said, I would be happy if we just got HL2: E3 at this point. Skipping it would leave me feeling cheated, especially with that stupid cliffhanger ending. It just seems like trying to tie up the episodes would take away from whatever the plan for the big 3rd entry in the series would be.

I have this sneaky suspicion that every time Valve has made real progress on Episode 3/Half-Life 3, they stepped back and thought that it either wasn't good enough or that they could still do it better. Have they set the bar so high for themselves that they've effectively taken on the impossible? I remember in Yahtzee's review of the Orange Box where he criticized how often Valve has made us do that seesaw puzzle (and other stagnant set pieces) and I wonder if they took that a little too much to heart.

I think IF they are going to release it, it'll be alongside the steambox and steamOS rollout: I can't imagine a better time to release it than as the flagship title for their monster gaming platform.

I don't think that Half Life 2 has aged well both in terms of gameplay and story. Half Life 3 is a curiosity to me but I wouldn't be getting my hopes up. It's been far too long since Valve have made a game. If Valve were to make Half Life 3 I'm sure it won't live up to the hype. It won't be Duke Nukem Forever, but I think it will be disappointing and it won't be able to reply on state of the art physics like the last one did.

I wouldn't particularly care any more, my initial investment in the series has waned as other games took its' place.

Sorry Valve, ya blew it.

Meah don't care anymore, I loved HL, was stoked for HL2 and super excited that they decided to go 'episodic' coz it meant that I wouldn't have to wait so long to see the next part of the story. Yeah...about that Valve umm...*tumble weed*...hello? Is there anyone there? No? Oh well move along nothing to see here.

I'm calling it now, Valve will never release Half Life 3 (Or episode 3 whatever) as it'll be a huge flop, they waited too long so now the hype has turned to apathy.

Well, I love everything Half Life, and do want to play HL3. That said, I fully expect it to either not sell well or have Duke Nukem Forever syndrome (or both). Half Life was relevant to a wide gaming audience 8 years ago. Now, it's only really remembered by people like us, who go on the internet to talk about games on a regular basis.

So you can't really say I'm excited for it at all, but if we finally get decisive news of it coming out (directly from Valve, and no weird shirt-showing-up shenanigans), I can imagine being pretty hyped. If it's decisively canceled, I can't say I'll be too disappointed, either. The entire logical part of my brain already assumes that, and it's just a tiny part of my emotional part holding out hope, which I'm attempting to crush as fast as possible.

HL1 was terrible, HL2 was quite good though pissed off that they decided to cancel Ep3 leaving me wasting money on the first two episodes - people forget that bullshit. As for HL3? I doubt they have even started making it yet, people think they have been developing it for the last 10 years or whatever but i highly doubt it.

Wouldnt it be funny if HL3 came out and it was more akin to CoD than HL2. lol

No April Fool's Joke, but I was never super-into the Half-Life games, anyway. (Yes, I've played both 1 and 2, as well as all the way through 2 Episode 1 and halfway through Episode 2). I don't think they're bad; far from it. I think they're some of the finest FPS games out there. I'm not sure why I never liked them as much as everyone else, but... I just don't. Maybe it's the setting, maybe it's the color design, maybe it's the sound design, but for whatever reason, they've never given me the same satisfaction that FPSs like Doom and Goldeneye did.

With all of that said, I'm REALLY annoyed at Valve for not saying anything about the game, leaving a lot of fans hanging on what I understand to be a cliff hanger at the end of Episode 2 (I don't know for sure, but I'm going by what I've heard as well as some of the posts here.) You DON'T DON'T DON'T leave cliffhangers unresolved for years, as the responses in this thread make quite clear. I may not care about the franchise, but I can relate to and sympathize with the dissatisfied fans. Valve may be one of the better companies in the game industry (at least ethically... well, except for a few issues I won't go into here because they're relatively minor compared to what many other companies do), but in this instance, they've dropped the ball so hard it's passed through all nine levels of Hell, hit Satan on the head knocking Judas out of his mouth, then hitting HIM on the head, passing through to the other side of the Earth, and all the way up the Purgatory mountain to the highest Heaven, finally slamming on the threefold-luminous head of God himself.

Now, while I have far less love for Valve than a good number of the other people on this forum, they are at least correct when they dispute that claim.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_Corporation#Games

Valve games have a recurring theme of being created by third-party teams which Valve buys or helps (a practice which has happened for all of their games released since and including Portal) during the development cycle, but they are still technically making and releasing games on a relatively consistent basis.

Your answer, there was a article on the Escapist about it. They wanted to use some new high tech 3d tech of some sort. However one problem exists, they can't have the NPC's heads follow where your character model is. So they are waiting until that tech comes out.

OT: I don't care, never particularly cared. I enjoyed their games, but i'm a mellow person.... Usually...... and i can wait for a long time for something to come out. But its getting to the point where the fans will get fed up and just MAKE Half life 3 instead.

Gah! If you're going to mention an article about why Half-Life 3 hasn't come out yet, at least have the common courtesy to link to it. That's just sadistic.

It's seemed like an article full of shi manure anyways, you don't miss much by not reading it.
