The opening is awesome

Its set on a train in 1930's America, it can be a bit confusing if you dont pay attention but its brilliant regardless. Also its an Anime where the English dub kicks the ever loving shit out of English sub/Japanese dub.

It's a tie.

Between Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

And Clannad ~After Story~

Total opposite ends of the spectrum I know.

I believe Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Naruto Shippuden, and Darker Than Black are some of the best, and they are definitely some of my favorites.

Awww man so many good anime to choose from, its hard to pick just one. I think id have to choose Hellsing ultimate.

Runners up would be, elfen lied, trigun, Now and then, here and there. and Rah-xephon.

I can't choose just one.
FLCL - One of the best and its only 6 episodes
Elfen Lied - Only 13 episodes, really gory and full of fan service but really good nonetheless
Slayers - My 1st anime and still one I love
Elfen Lied...umm I think you're confusing fan service with nudity. Yes there is a difference.

OT: my favourites are the following

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Hellsing, both of them
Elfen Lied
Trigun
Berserk

JemothSkarii

Thanks!

Impossible to say, depends on what kind of greatness you want, really.

Do you want the greatness in sheer emotional power of Grave of the Fireflies, the incredibly nuanced character interaction and portrayals in Spice & Wolf, the noir suspense of the redemptive odyssey in Monster, or the creative approach to visual style and faithful reinterpretation of a literary classic in Gankutsuou?

I doubt my own personal favourite could objectively really be termed "great", but I like it anyway.
I agree with all of those except Monster, purely because I have not seen it or even heard of it.
...Grave of the Fireflies made me cry. Gankutsuou got a lot of flak from my friends for the art style, but I did find it to be an interesting and worthwhile adaption. Spice and Wolf I love the setting and characters, and those plot twists that always pop up and keep you on your toes.
And the TENSION between Lawrence and Holo, just wow.
Two more favorites are Code Geass and Gurren Lagaan

EDIT: Hellsing Ultimate; Crispin Freeman's voice is just so....AWESOME, and the characters are interesting, especially Schrodinger and Rip Van Winkle.

AWWW DUDE, NO-ONE DISSES BLEACH. but on a serious note I still watch /read it and I enjoy it but there is too much FILLER. If I remember correctly they had over 36 weeks of filler on end =_=. I think you can tell from my avatar that it's one of my favourites but I haven't seen that many.(don't have the time(although i have skimmed through dragonball Z and loved it))

On a side note can anyone suggest a good anime to watch or manga to read?
If you haven't seen them, then any of the ones on my list are good, I also recommend things like Code Geass, Highschool of the Dead, Claymore, Fullmetal Panic is also good, it's just a matter of finding a set of tags you like and following.

Yes there was Nudity in context but dude, there was a ton of Fanservice in Elfen Lied.

I honestly have to agree. The Bebop is possibly ((in my own mind atleast)) the best constructed anime universe. There politics, crime, military, and technology, all really explained in some sort of detail.

The characters are beyond likeable, and scripting doesnt get anybetter. The art is clean and always smoooth, and the audio quality is on par with even the most modern anime. The jokes are witty, and complemented extreamly well by the cast. Both the original japanese audio, and the amarican dub sound wonderful.

Its really one of the only animes to make me tear up, and even cry at times.

Umineko and Higurashi, they were both epic but Beatrice's evil witches cackle will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Mine would have to be Cowboy Bebop at this time. Ive never seen such a well constructed universe with so many genres and diverse subjects. The characters are amazing (especially Ed :3) and the music just tops it off as the cherry on this sundae of AWESOME.

(There probably is a similar thread to this but I couldn't find it. So don't give me flak for making a new one please.)
I'm agreeing with the OP, cowboy bebop has be my most favorite anime ever.

Over 100 posts and no mention of Legend of the Galactic Heroes? I know it's old (and long) but still...

I've seen quite a few series, but there's nothing that comes close for me. It has everything I enjoy: politics, war, relations & drama, epic classical music, conspiracies etc. This all set in space dominated by a 'Prussian-like' Empire on one side and a 'Western' (kindaa corrupt) democracy on the other. Only thing is it looks rather bad, especially the episodes from the '80s (it ran from '88 til '97).
