Darn it, it's so hard to trust games on Kickstarter. Maybe after a few years I'll be able to trust anything but an accomplished seasoned developer, but now...

The thing about games is, the idea means nothing generally. All the devs say ideas are dime a dozen, what makes a game good is 90% execution and you just can't judge that on a Kickstarter. On paper Mario is a sucky game, it's the nitty gritty design that makes it interesting, on paper that Alone in the Dark remake sounded fantastic, story-focused dark, real time weapon selection, realistic fire interaction, combo item customisation.

And then the game wasn't very good because it wasn't made well. There are a few exceptions (Minecraft maybe?) but its generally true.

And here its hugely true. Look at Champions Online and DC Universe, on paper, heavily customisable open world Superhero MMOs with detailed and varied power selection. And then the game wasn't very good.

I want this to work, I just can't trust that it will, particularly not with the scope involved. The closer a game is to simple, the less little details need to be right and the more ideas play a role.

I was amazed that this game didn't get picked up when it resurfaced a couple of years ago. Here's hoping Kickstarter will finally get this thing finished.

For those questioning how they can make it with what they are asking, they can't. However, they need the money to finish it, not make it. They have been working on this for several years already, but it's always had to be a side project for them. The Kickstarter is so they can devote a team to it full time and finally get it out of the door.

If you want a better idea of how it's going to play, check out this video for the original game, hero,

Oh wow, this was cancelled? I only saw the trailer just then, went "I want this", checked the YouTube description, and was disappointed.

I'm sad now.

Posted something like this in the other thread...

They need and expect way more than $500k to make this game. There's a line in the video that says, "We have other sources of funding, but we need your help to get off the ground," which is really vague and not at all reassuring. They play up modding a ton in the video, but even just "basic" modding support is a stretch goal.

They expect to get way more than $500k from Kickstarter, and they expect to get even more from a publisher/investor later down the road. I dunno whether to call it really sketchy or to call it really naive (maybe both), but this ain't something I'd give money to.

Read that, watch the video, believe me, you will be SOLD! I can not possibly express just how excited this makes me :D This is the game I've been waiting my WHOLE LIFE for. Destructoid is doing a lot of coverage on this and I think the escapist should as well, because these guys and their grand vision deserves to be looked at.

TL:DR - An open-world superhero game that lets you customize your character and your superpowers to your liking :)
Grand vision is all well and good, but pretty much every artist will have a grand vision of some kind for their games, and more often than not it tends to fall flat due to how that vision is executed (see games like Brink and ME3)

As it stands, I'm not particularly sold on the concept. It sounds interesting, but it seems like they're just making a sandbox creator for personal fantasies, which doesn't seem all that enjoyable a concept unless I want to spend a shit-ton of time setting it up myself

However, I digress.

Right now it is way too early to tell how this project is going to pan out, so I'll reserve my more critical nit-picking until there are some more concrete details as to how this is going to be done.

I'll add to the chorus of voices. Does not seem achievable.

I'll just drop a little fact here. I'm a backer for DFA, they are struggling with their 3 million plus budget. And don't forget, they are making an old school 2D adventure game, directed by an industry veteran.

These things are not cheap

Sounds ambitious, but then they are essentially making a sales pitch. Overall, there is nothing here that I see that has convinced me to back it.

Looks promising but some people should really watch the video before saying "only $500,000 that's impossible". The video states it is used to help further the project and while that is the base amount they are looking for they would like more. I would also like to think that larger investors are holding out until the company can reach that $500,000 goal so that the investor can see that this project could lead to a decent profit. Also there is some footage of (possibly?) the current progress which suggest they have started it already and need this to help continue funding it.

The project scope exceeds what I believe they can accomplish. Asking for 500k for that kind of game is naive at best. Peter Molyneux promised less and consistently failed to deliver a fraction of what he pitched and he had the benefit of dozens (eventually hundreds) of professionals, a budget of millions, and the backing (and all that implies) of a billion dollar company with a vested interest in seeing his ideas brought to life. In short they promise the sky and ask a pittance. That sum is sufficient to pay a living wage for, at best, 20 people for a year and even then they won't be living well.

Basically, I don't think the game they aim to make could be done in 80,000 man hours.
