Doubt many have played or heard of it but I loved the Lunar series.

Lunar: The Silver Star Story
Lunar: Eternal Blue
Yeah, I've got a soft spot in my heart for them, too. Too bad there was never another game in the series proper past the second.
Good to see another fan of that small but amazing series. I wish someone would find it in their heart to give life back to it.

So much love for Empire in this thread. I can't say i agree. Like you I was SUPER excited for that game. I get it, and the AI is border line retarded. There was once a fight in which I was assaulting a fort, full army against full army. I decided (stupidly, they never surrender anyway) to siege the fort. Well, when the CPUs turn came they marched a second full army out of their city and attacked me. I couldn't retreat, so i just accepted that i was going to get destroyed.

The fight started and I was in the fort (Wait. What? Was I not the one attacking the fort to begin with?). I set my guys up along the walls and positioned everyone else. Well, the enemy runs up to the walls of my fort and here I am thinking it was almost over. Nope. They stood at the walls, I'd say maybe one set of ropes went up, and ONLY that one batallion came up. Even the reinforcements just stood there and died. So after my guys on the walls ran out of ammo i would just bring them (attempt) to get them off the wall. For some reason they think climbing down the rope and going through the front gate is better than going down the ramp DIRECTLY behind them, but who am I to judge. So now I have to deal with cavalry and American Indian troops running in through my front gate that should have never been open in the first place.

I won the battle, under no circumstances should I have though. Although this series is a great idea and I do enjoy playing it from time to time, such obvious flaws are what ruin a great game for me. I don't like buying games to beta test them for the developer so they can get to final release through patches.

Back on topic. My favorite series has to be Hitman. Splinter Cell was great til Double Agent, so that makes it fall off my #1 game. I just love those games where you are in and out without anyone even knowing you were there.

But Rome was one heck of a game, you gotta admit. And Empire's got the best multiplayer RTS experience I've felt in the series, warts and all. At the very least, it feels the most tactical--and compared to other RTS series, too!

I will give you that, Rome was frickin sweet. At least it gave a purpose to sieging (setting up rams and ladders). My friend had the only computer for Shogun when it came out and I for some reason missed the Med 1&2. So I cannot comment on those. But yes, Rome.... ah, those were the days.

Empire was a nice change of tactics too I felt. It's like... WAIT I don't have ONLY swordsmen, pikemen, archers and cavalry... ahhh guns! What do I do?!? What do I do?!?

Now that ranged units actually have firing arcs, formation, placement, and knowing when to change either is even more important than previous games. This tends to create situations where you can read the lines of battle and how they emerge when the infantrymen line up to face off, then develop a plan to break those lines to your advantage; in a 4v4 fight, seeing the tides of battle sway with the changing of firing arcs and the redeployment of infantry blocks is quite the experience for a fledgling armchair general.

And breathtaking when you realize you can actually read the information and act accordingly.

For some reason I was tempted to say fantasy football, but I'd honestly have to go with Need For Speed, up until Carbon made me do those retarded canyon duels.

And it's just SO damn satisfying to see your line infantry just unload and drop a huge chunk of their units. The sound it makes, I'll never tire of it!

Medievil on PS1.
A game as if straight out of the mind of Tim Burton.

Although they made a very unnecessary sequel for PS1 and unnecessary remake on PSP

Oh Lord, I never actually beat that game because of the.. uh "final boss" if that's what you want to call him. I found the game to not actually be that hard, then BAM BRICK WALL DIFFICULTY CURVE at him. I just COULDN'T beat him, I tried and tried, I just couldn't do it. it was stupid.

Total War, every game is seemingly as good as it gets in terms of RTS. Honestly, I have never met a person into RTS who didn't like the Total War series. (Not to say that the person doesn't exist... lets be honest, if they do then they will almost certainly be happy to announce so on here).
Agreed

Yeah, Mario all the way!

Mario has had sooo many games and most of them were great. He has inspired many other artists and even these days he is still very popular with his most recent game Mario Galaxy which is probably the best game on the Wii. Don't forgot the Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Lands, Super Mario Worlds, Super Mario Karts, Super etc.

I would also have to say the Zelda, Command & Conquer, Street Fighter, Warcraft, Diablo (soon), Sonic, Metroid, Megaman and Final Fantasy are also great series.

More Total War love from me...

Seriously, that game usurped the number one spot from Civilisations in my personal All Time Greats list.
