Pain. It surges through bone and blood.

Oh, and that's the voice of Squidward doing that voice. Really.

That, and the "War... War never changes" one as well.

"Tim is off on a search to rescue the Princess. She has been snatched by a horrible and evil monster.

This happened because Tim made a mistake."

Seriously. Braid will blow your mind.

The beginning from Bioshock where your plane falls in the middle of the ocean and just happens to crash near a gigantic lighthouse, which happens to be the secret entrance to an underwater city. Was this a coincidence? A miracle? Goddamn it, I love this game!

"Rise and shine Mr. Freeman, rise and shine. Not that I wish to imply that you have been sleeping on the job. No one is more deserving of a rest. And all the effort in the world would have gone to waste until... Well let's just say your hour has come again.
The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.

So wake up Mr. Freeman,
Wake up and smell the Ashes."

Soon followed, of course, by:

"Citizen... Pick up that can."
No love for "Welcome, welcome to City 17"?

Come on. You know it's he's a friendly guy when he's not even trying to hide the fact that he's an Orwellian pastiche.

I'm surprised that no one's said "Good morning, Crono!" yet.
Though in all seriousness:
A loud noise startled Junpei awake, and his eyes snapped open.

999, I wish I could stop playing you repeatedly...

"In my restless dreams, I see that town: Silent Hill."

If I can have two sentences, then I add "You promised you'd take me there again someday... but you never did.", which makes it more powerful.

Although James might say something in scene in the bathroom before that... which would ruin everything.

"What's going on...? ... that's my blood. That's my blood; that's a lot of my blood."

Gotta love Uncharted 2.

my favorite game opening is definitely Mass Effect 2. it actually felt like a movie, especially the way they introduced the title. very few games do that.

Damn it, 4th already post beat me to it...

OT: Saint's Row 3.

Conquest.
The story of human history.
Since time immemorial, great leaders have risen from humble beginnings to...
do shit.

It doesn't really get better than that, in terms of epicness and stupidity.

imprisoned for ten thousand years.... banished from my homeland.... and now you dare enter my realm.... you are not prepared.

We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile.

They have taken you from the Imperial City's prison, first by carriage and now by boat, to the east, to Morrowind. Fear not for I am watchful, you have been chosen...

those are openings worth remembering imo

There's also this particular gem, and it is immediately recognizable.

"It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."

For best opening ever, I'm not sure, but for greatest opening this year, no contest.

"There's a hundred thousand streets in this city. You don't need to know the route. If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm your's, no matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you're on your own. Do you understand?"

Here's how it is: Earth got used up, so we terraformed a whole
new galaxy of Earths, some rich and flush with the new technologies,
some not so much. Central Planets, them was formed the Alliance, waged
war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight
it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. Got
a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher,
and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, took his genius
sister out of some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low profile.
You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is.
