Torment (Planescape universe in general), Fallout universe, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe, Sanitarium, Broken Sword (1 & 2 mostly), Mass Effect universe, Portal, Heavy Rain and the first true Fable game (the one from Telstar Electronic Studio) when yer looking for Drama/a fair level of seriousness.
Monkey Island (+ the rest of the old school point&click Lucasarts adventures; != TellTale), the Discworld games (don't forget DW Noir!) and Toonstruck when it comes to Comedy.

MGS 4 and FFXII. I find this ff game to have the most immersive storyline and seems more.....realistic for the setting of the game.
while i would like to agree.

ff12 had an awesome setting, and they had the right plot

just the characters, especially in your party, were so weak and boring ass backgrounds mostly, especially vaan and penelope

otherwise that game is pretty sweet.

OT: there have been some awesome ones..

but kotor gets my pick

the plot twist..i have never had my jaw drop and have my brain be imploded all over the inside of my skull like that ever before or again, there have been some really sweet stories but the kotor one just fit so damn well and it brought everything together right there..

Persona 4 no game I have ever played had a story to equal it.

not bioshock
not final fantasy(even though 10 was good)
not halo
not modern warfare
not mass effect(haven't played 2 yet)
not chrono trigger
not fallout 3 or oblivion 4
not portal or half-life 2

the reason why? the writing was phenomenal. the premise was simple you are a group of teenage kids trying to catch a serial killer but the scenes are all so hilariously or brilliantly written that you crave more. its a long game(give or take) but I craved so much of it. it even taught me things about my life that I have been using for over a year. the story has enough...you know what? play it yourself and see.

Final fantasy 7 and 10 always stick with me,and I have a childish softspot for kingdom hearts (not the sequals), but my favourite is MGS3. Best ending ever.

Do you see what everyone else has put above me? Good, now ignore them because they're all wrong.

Mafia has the best game story ever.
I sincerly like how you defend that game to no end. Bravo my good man!
You could say it's my purpose in life.

I'll echo Shadow of the Colossus, truly great stuff there.

If you prefer your story to be the world's largest and most awesome piece of Swiss cheese, try Killer 7. Don't say I didn't warn you though.

Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Portal, Baldur's Gate, FF VII, and Shadow of the Colossus.

There are plenty of others, but I tire to name them.
youve just named a shitload of good games, but portal and shadow of the colossus for story? wasnt the whole arty appeal of those games their almost complete lack of any narrative elements?

I have it.. but haven't played it. :( YET! I got it when I got Persona 3 FES. I bought both on impulse without knowing jack about them either. I was very impressed with Persona 3. But I had to put it down for school and work. :( I have yet to resume yet. But I will! And when I finish Persona 3, I will play Persona 4. :)

The greatest story ever told in a video games was Super Paper Mario's. Its tale of a heart broken man seeking redemption.

The ability to tell a story through silence is one I implore in every way.
Sure, nobody told you what was going on in Portal, but the player piecing it together was unique. It was one of the few games with a silent and emotionless protagonist that I felt I could actually transplant myself into.
Further more, Shadow of the Collosus' almost complete lack of any talking took the same element I just described way higher. You had to conjure up the idea for what was happening yourself, given only pieces around the gameplay. In my eyes, it had one of the best ending twists in a game.

I quite liked BioShock's storytelling, what with the audio diaries and such. I also like the entirety of Resident Evil's history. Cool stuff.
Agreed

and the lore of the fallout series told a fantastic story if not a broad one.

Since Silent Hill has already been said I'll go with Prince of Persia :Sands of Time (the only great game in the series)

Modern Warfare 2, clearly.

But seriously, probably Mass Effect. The original alone told an epic story, and although the second doesn't quite live up to that (no criticism of the game, it's a great game with a good story, just lacking the epic-saga feel of the first), the trilogy, when completed, will probably win out overall.

Panzer Dragoon Orta, the main story wasn't the best but there was an insane amount of backstory.
Chrono Trigger was also pretty awesome :D
