[sub](I ran a search, but the forum search wouldn't process it. So, I'm starting a new topic, reguardless of there probably have been one some time in the past. Don't blame me. Blame a search function that, for whatever reason, wouldn't work when I wanted to investigate this topic. ^_^)[/sub]

I'm a story writer, and a novice comic book artist/illustrator. Story telling is my strongest art form, and favorite aspect of video gaming (or entertainment, for that matter). "A game without a story is pointless," I've often said. A great story will let me forgive other parts of a game I maybe don't like. Or even let me play a game I wouldn't normally try. There's been a lot of greats out there, too. Great-greats! So many, we're bound to skip over more than a few of them in this thread.

If you could, lets discuss some of your choice video game told stories. But I want to hear more than the game name. Talk about what it is about the games story that appeals to you. And game arcs are more than fine. If a game takes three installments to tell the whole thing, that's okay.

I've just gotten done watching all the cut scenes for FF7 Crisis Core on Youtube. I don't own a psp, and finally accepted the fact that it may never be ported to the ps2/psn like I had hoped. So in place of getting to play the game, I banked on what I knew of JRPGs and Square-Enix in paticular, and hoped that the entirety of the story would be communicated through animated-movie-like cut scenes-- and I was mostly right.

I felt like the creators did the (FF7) franchise a great service by weaving the story the way they did. In contrast to Cloud, Zach was such a warm character, and instantly likeable. (Perhaps that contrast is why I liked him, since most characters like in in jrpgs I find irritating. Still love Cloud too.) Knowing the end of the game made liking the character that much harder. And watching the familiar cut scenes from flash back moments in the original FF7 made me squee. :3

Final Fantasy 7, and the arcing story that is connected to the game often lingers in my head when I think of great stories in games. Maybe not the greatest story telling elements were used (even people playing the game find things hard to follow at times), but the story shone through anyway as something really unique.

So how about your fave? :)

MGS 4 and FFXII. I find this ff game to have the most immersive storyline and seems more.....realistic for the setting of the game.

I personally thought the Half-Life 2 story was told extremely well, they gave enough information about what was going on for you to play effectively, but if you wanted more info you could look at newspaper clippings and listen to random bits of conversation to really figure out what was going on.

Another would be the original Mass Effect, I really felt like I was making headway through out that story and I throughly enjoyed playing through that

Another is Portal, the total lack of story and a fully fleshed out one at the same time made it compelling, leaving lots of questions and a desire for more. plus the hidey holes were creepy and amazing at the same time

I know there are more but I can't think of others at this time, perhaps I will update later.

I found Heavy Rain's story to be insanely immersive, unlike most people I didn't cry at the end (although that may be because I got the super happy ending) but still felt genuinly relieved and happy that I saved Ethan's son.

However Final Fantasy ix is still amazing the characters all have a certain depth that is usually hard to find in gaming. I guess that is what Square do best.

Looking at some recent games it's hard to pick a best story, not because they all suck but because gaming has reached a new standard in it's storytelling. Games like Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, and even Call Of Duty 4 are some standout stories of recent years.

I'll guess I'll be that guy... Postal 2.

For such a simple story, I found it so delightful. There wasn't anything heavy and it wasn't really shallow either all things considered. The game is just right, it tells the story at the perfect pace and has some pretty awesome moments.

Chrono Trigger was just epic. You really cared about all the characters. All the things that really didn't make sense were given reasons that were entirely believable and fit perfectly by the end. There were also times when you would be incredibly sad and times when you had a "HALL FUCKING YEAH!!" feeling as well. It is the complete package.

I also love the Halo franchise, especially if you count the back story in the books and such, it is a very complete look at their universe. The amount of metaphors Bungie put int there is also really nice; for me anyway.

And this, in my opinion, is the all-time winner in discussions as this. Nothing can beat such a strong story as troment told.

Since Planescape: Torment was already said (and really, it wasn't that great of an actual game, but it's in another league with its story), I'm going with The Darkness. The game really made you feel a lot of different emotions, and made you want to keep playing no matter how horrible the WW1 sections were, just so you could get revenge. And there were certain moments in the game where you could watch whole movies. Yes, you can sit down with your girlfriend and watch the entirety of To Kill a Mockingbird right in your video game.

It just executed its idea so well.

I would hav Mass Effect or perhaps Oblivion. Yeah, the sidequests suck but the story is epic and surprising. That goes for both of em.

I liked the story in Dragon Age: Origins. Was pretty epic.
Except it was 'Lord of the Rings' without the ring.

Bah, I know people are gonna light me and the surrounding fields on fire with their flaming, but I've gotta say Red Dead Redemption. In my mind it's one of the most deliberately paced, well balanced and all out riveting stories I've ever had the pleasure to play through. It's story-telling brilliance in action. lots of action ^^
