Bastian's body was under his control, the foolish Fortunamancer had been playing too greedily with his magic and that made him the perfect place to hide. Until, of course, the mind-walkers jumped in and began poking where they shouldn't. He could feel them, crawling through the dark. He tried misdirecting them, but these were skilled creatures and they had much power in him already.
I have little time before they discover my true name it thought, directing Bastian's body to remove the mask. Something shoved the mask back, and a fight ensued. The creature was distracted and in an instant, Kin was inside it's mind.

It was an alien and harsh landscape of dead, rotting trees and swampy water and mire mud. Ghastly remains were everywhere and carrion crows cawed harshly from the air. It was rooting around, looking for its name. The beast within Bastian tried to misdirect Kin, creating false images of books in the water but they were paper-thin veneers and were not real. The beast had no choice, either submerge on its side of the gateway or have its mind plundered. It began to slink back, growling and angry, but it was not fast enough. Kin grasped a skull from the mire pulled it free just as he was ejected from its mind into Bastian's.

Bastian's mind was a confused mess, solidifying into a crowd of people in an empty room that seemed to fade in and out, only Bastian staying regular near the center. Bastian and Kin stood there a moment, silent before Kin said "That thing, whatever it is, is still in there. But I grabbed this as it retreated..."
The skull held a memory only an imperiomancer could tease out; it was just one thing....a word. "Balhrahar" said Kin, searching his own memories for the word, then he dropped the skull...stunned into silence, it shattered on impact and reformed itself on the ground.
"What?" asked Bastian.
"It can't be...that's not even possible."
"What is it?"
"Look; the Rhyle know of this...thing....that oversees and rules the Shadow Lords. They call it the Overlord and sometimes they call it the Lord of Oblivion. It dosen't have a true form, per-se, it exists in a state of total chaos...like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly...timey-wimey...stuff..." said Kin, trying to explain "It is the first Perditiomancer and extremely powerful at that, a fallen servant of the Light that did not return to the Light when the Anchorites cleansed them. Balhrahar is its true name, and knowing that means we can maybe force him out but I..." there Kin stopped and scuffed his feet,
"I don't know how to do that...it can still walk in and out of your body without you knowing...it could even influence you...I need to do something you might not like in order to hold it back, at least for a little while..."
"What is that, Kin?" asked Bastian, nervous, people bumping into Kin in a nervous frenzy.
"I need to reach into the depths of your unconscious and plant something, a defense. If it tries to enter you, it will attack and force it back. But it won't last, this thing will overcome it."
"How long will I be protected?"
"I can't say....a day, a week, I've never done this to block such a powerful entity before. It's mind in completely alien and strange, and I'm thankful it pulled out of I would have been lost."
"Then do what you have to do, Kin. Just...let me be normal for a while...."
"Then do exactly as I say, I'll need you down there. It's pretty dark in people's unconscious."
A torch appeared in Kin's hands as a doorway opened up before them, "Down the rabbit hole we go..." remarked Bastian.

Without the others to distract him, Lurker resigned himself to taking potshots off the port bow, in a fit of boredom. After about an hour and 3 dead birds, he got up and decided to strike up a conversation with the gas-mask clad russian newcomer.

Pyotr looked at the new flask Jeffery had beheld with considerably less scrutiny, but still with uncertainty. He accepted the flask, eyed the craftsmanship of the metalwork, took a light whiff of the contents and was about to tip it back to get a swig before turning to Jeffery with a look of faint skepticism. "Now, would you kindly tell me what exactly is in this flask? Just so I can get an idea of what kind of drinker you are."

@willofbob: Pyotr does not have a gas mask, you have him confused for someone else.

You so should add this (or something like it) to the post...

'Balhrahar, Basitan, is the deadliest, most powerful, most malevolent entity the Light has ever produced and right now one of them is trying to get inside your head, and I'm supposed to climb in after it with a mask and a torch, and assuming I am not destroyed and assuming it doesn't take control of you, do something incredibly clever which I haven't actually thought of yet. That's my day, that's what I'm up to. Any questions?'

Yes, I see a lot of quote nicking going on in this RP...

I'm not going to quote the Doctor much anymore besides that forgetting something is playing a huge role right at this very moment. I'm spoiling here so avert your eyes but THE SHADOW'S MOST POWERFUL SERVANTS, THE SHADOW LORDS, HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ANTICIPATE THE GUARDIANS BECAUSE THEIR SERVANTS, THE QUIET ONES, HAVE BEEN AMONG THEM. THEY ARE ON THE SHIP RIGHT NOW BUT NO ONE REMEMBERS THEM. THEY NEVER SPEAK, THEY ONLY QUIETLY WATCH....AND THEY ARE ULTIMATELY POWERFUL, ALMOST AS POWERFUL AS THE LORDS THEMSELVES.

Bastian descended following the light of the torch as it was swallowed up in the gloom. Wherever this was, it was cold and empty...Bastian could almost feel the cold wind blowing.
"We just need to find this scar, wherever it is..." said Kin, the torch waving to and fro.
Bastian suddenly blurted out "Go right."
He didn't know why he said that, and Kin looked at him, his face showing in the light of the torch...the rest of his body lost in the gloom. They walked to the right, through this cold and empty place.

They saw a faint light in the distance, sickly and green. It was not long before the rift showed itself, a yawning scar-like chasm descending into squirming green roils of energy. Bastian went to his knees, feeling sickened at its presence. Kin, on the other hand, heard a voice in his ear "Bastian is flailing, scratching himself, and he's babbling in some other langauge...watch out."
The place, however, changed so fast he could not react. An environment erupted around him, a huge gothic temple where the ceiling soared and at its center, a circular hole showed the rift below. It was massive, ancient and beautiful...but this was not all for show. Kin looked at Bastian, or where he was, for he had been replaced by a demonic monster out of a nightmare. It was almost seven feet tall, and had wicked claws and horns...its skin slick with blackness and wings shedding ash as they shook. It opened its mouth, green fire emanating as it spoke.
"Fool, this is my domain and this is my vessel. You cannot hope to stop me...."
Kin prepared for battle, but whatever was about to happen he had to be victorious...he had to release Bastian from the hold of this creature...

Jeffery paused and looked at the flask, waggling it around viciously with his hand, listened to it, and shrugged. "Not sure. Never was the type to drink anything but this." He handed it back and pulled the gasmask over his face again.

"I wish I still had some of my stuff," Hadrian muttered. "I finished it before I came aboard."
He snorted. "And the drinks that they have here taste like pigswill in comparison."

Pyotr only nodded, his eyes never leaving the flask, as Jeffery spoke his unknowing of the drink. Hadrian spoke up again about his longing for a decent drink, and again the Russian nodded with understanding. Well, I suppose that makes me the more fortunate one for bringing aboard my own supply, he thought. Looking over at Hadrian, he held out the flask for him, "Here, better than this vessel's pigswill I am sure."

Hadrian took the flask gratefully and licked his lips in anticipation. He was about to take a swig, but stopped.
"Are you sure you don't want it Pyotr?"

Kin looked at the monster through the chaos now settling into a cathedral. He turned and grabbed a candle stand, and began weighing it in his mind.
"Old man, perhaps you have forgotten what a real weapon looks like." The monster hissed.
"And perhaps, you have forgotten the most powerful weapon of all...."
Suddenly the candle stick became amebic, like liquid, flowing over his body. It engulfed and surrounded him, until it became a full suit of armor.
".... the mind."
--------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Back in the real world (not to imply the mind isnt real) Rueben was struggling to hold Bastian down. Gutteral words were being babbled on mindlessly by Bastian.
Suddenly it spoke english.
"Dont let the faceless one deceive you...." It hissed.
"He wants control of you.... to relive his own glory...
.. we... will make you truly complete with power
with... his.. power..."

"what?"

-------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------

Without warning the two rushed each other, Kin planting a hand on and vaulting the alter to get to his foe. What started as a fist fight progressed into weapons. Kin grabbed a candle stand and parried the first blow from the monsters sword, a seemingly simple looking steel thing, but none the less, imbued with unseen dark energy. Eventually, the beast struck with enough force to knock it from kins hands.
"Give it up old man, you cand stop this...."
Doing a quick jump backwards, Kin grabbed another. Improvising like this was something he was very good at. But eventually the second stand was disarmed, just as the first.
"Ill make you a deal, give me this body, and together we will get Ruebens for you...."
Kin bolted towards the alter.
"God wont save you here." The monster laughed. Kin began frantically throwing the offering basket and communion tray and goblets at him. He brushed them away with swings of his hand.
"Now whatever you have come here to plant.... It wont work. "
Kin began to slowly take steps back. He jumped slightly when he felt the wall against his back.
"It looks like you are cornered. Funny considering you came here to corner me."
The man in the blank mask just shook his head.
"No no no.." A muffled voice came out.
"Im just the bait."
"What?"
Kin shrugged in apathy for a moment, then grabbed a candle stand from the corner. He pulled something out of his pocket. He felt the rosary beads in his hand. "I might believe in Jesus, but im not a huge fan of the Catholic Church."
He draped them onto the candle stand.
"But I will give them credit where credit is due."
"And where is that?" The beast snarled, becoming impatient with theatrics.
"Look around you, that's where."
The beast turned around, the other candle stands had rosaries on them as well.
Kin could only smile. "Out of the game for over fifty years, and I can still take you to school"
Suddenly it hit him....

--138 seconds (and counting) ago--

Kin ran and jumped the alter, but his jump was more of a swinging of the legs over it. His left hand firmly planted in its surface for leverage. The monster failed to notice the rosaries which his left hand swiped in one fluid motion with the jump.

--20 seconds later--

Kin snatched the candle stand, and stood his ground for a few seconds parrying blows. Eventually he let go, allowing a relatively weak swing to have a seemingly strong effect.

--30 seconds later--

A second candle stand is grabbed. It is promptly disarmed, but not before a second rosary is set down over it.

--16 seconds later--

Kin runs behind the alter, clearing space on it under the guise of throwing items at his opponent. Another rosary is left on it.

--seconds later-- Kin grabs a third candle stand and, as obviously as possible, places a rosary on it.

"And I can still take you to school..."

The stands were laid out in a triangle. The alter at the center.

"You aint going anywhere pal."
"Who says we have to? You and I together could..."
"yeah yeah, I know "take over everything" blah blah.... get some new material for pete's sake!"
"You son of a *****." The monster, enraged, ran for Kin head on. Kin performed a clean sort of sidestep/ throw, hurling his foe behind him. Just as he was about to cross the threshold between two candle stands, some invisible force hit him like a ton of bricks. He was rocketed backwards and straight into Kins outstretched, clenched fist. Making contact with his skull, the rest of his opponents body swung forward and out from underneath him as the top half was stopped by Kin. The monster landed flat on his back with a sickening thud.
"Class is in session, *****....."

Kin grabbed him by the face and began to drag him towards the wall.
"Ill give you ten seconds to leave."
"No" was the response.
With a sonic "thwack" the beast bounced off the wall again.
"Fine, ill do this the hard way."
From his own mind, Kin produced a shard, a branch of energy compacted to fit in ones hand. He shoved it into the beasts chest. It screamed in agony as suddenly a light from within burst open. kin only remembered getting knocked backwards. When he came to his senses, he was on the floor. He looked around to see Bastian were the monster had been. And behind bastian a few feet away was a mass of green energy, trying desperately to re-form itself as it struggled to its feet, attempting to choke out some curse like insult in deep speech.
"Bastian, get up.." Kin coughed from under the mask.

Bastian was woozy, the world was echoing. "Get up, Bastian..." he heard Kin from far away. There was an ungodly, high-pitched squeal as something rushed over his shoulder and he heard Kin grunt.
"I'll admit, that was a good hit.." head heard Kin say, farther away. "Go on you ugly son-of-a-*****....do something!"
Bastian shook his head. A monstrous ball of green energery pulsated above him before forming the shape of a person in green flame.
"Nuh-uh, that's crossing a line, buddy!" said Kin as he crawled away, trying to stand.
The monster's voice was female and sweet, "Whats wrong, sweetness? Don't you want me back?"
"What I want? I want you to stop playing games, Balhrahar."
The green flame-entity flared, shouting "You NEVER wanted me, did you? You always had your eyes on someone ELSE didn't you? How dare you betray me and your family!"
"Face it, theatrics aren't going to sway me."
The flame-being reformed into a ball and said "Then let us see you sleep tonight knowing my eyes watch out, even now, in your world..."

~~~
In the real world, Reuben felt eyes prickoing in the back of his head. He turned slowly to look behind him. There it was, it was tall and slender with a strange face that was like its chin was wax held too close to a candle and allowed to drip and run. It had only eyes and two tiny nostrils. It was robed in black and its hands were in its sleeves. Suddenly, a long and thin sword appeared glittering in its hands. Reuben looked away and as he did so, the memory slipped from his mind...he couldn't remember what he had to tell Kin until the blade slid neatly into his back and the clawed fingers closed on the back of his neck. It hissed slowly into his ear and be began to loose consciousness as he felt something warm and sticky being poured into his right ear.
~~~

Bastian was recovered and looked at Balhrahar as he tossed Kin around, cackling. "Where, pray, is your strength old man? The Light can't guard you here..."
Bastian barked something in Acrypha, he simply opened his mouth and the words flowed out.
Balhrahar stopped, the demon-form twitching.
It turned "What did you say?"
Bastian barked the word again "Bhalrossum"
The creature was visibly straining, trying to raise its arm. Bastian, with a thought, sent the arm and the fist attached crashing into the creature's face.
"Stop hitting yourself, Balhrahar is unbecoming..." mocked Kin, getting up and wiping blood off of his face.
Bastian said something else, "N'jar Iq Te Voir, C'el a'est etour'a."
"How dare you command me!" said Balhrahar.
"Akoum Zje's Sel-Abr'am Taku'rja. S'kaj Khest-Oour Del-Arr'ess, Balhrahar."
"I'm sorry what are you saying, Bastian?"
The church bell began ringing and Bastian said "Follow its ringing, old friend. Walk all the way into the darkness past the ways the good spirits go. Walk yourself into oblivion, never to be again..."
Whatever voice it was, it was Bastian's but it definitely was doing something Bastian could not do. The creature began walking towards the rift and as it stood near the edge it snarled out a curse before it plunged in, the bell's ringing beginning to collapse the structure around them. Bastian stood stock still as Kin shook him, trying to get him to move. Screams and curses spewed from the rift as the building collapsed around them. Kin shouted in Bastian's ear, trying to get him to move before he snapped out of it as one final long scream issued from the rift.
"I've walked him past the last gate, he's beyond even Shadow now. Ou'Rus has taken its vengeance and sent him to the nothingness that punishes those who serve the Darkness." said Bastian, his voice numb and flat. He looked at Kin, his eyes glowing a little with golden light. "Thank you, old friend. We've defeated a great evil today..."
"Who...who are you?" asked Kin.
"You know me. I was once a part of you, and am still a part of you. Just reach into your heart and you'll know." then Bastian smiled and promptly passed out again.
"This just keeps getting weirder and weirder..." remarked Kin.

~~~
In the real world, sounds of struggle brought Jeffrey, Hardian and Pytor who saw this strange creature sliding its blade out of Reuben and sheathing it up its sleeve. It stared them down, its form wavering at the edges as a low hum started up, buzzing through the room. They all clutched at their heads, migraines erupting in their heads as the evil poison began to spread and turn them to its bidding, trying to make them look away. All but Bastian who awoke, taking off the mask and pulling his gun. "Not so fast, punk..." the bullet blew the creature's brains out and everyone in the room fell to the floor with black and purple colored liquid oozing from their ears, including the ears of Reuben who was beginning to bleed onto the floor. Bastian tapped his communicator and grunted out "Five men down int he common area, medics respond..." before he put the mask back on.
~~~

"How did you call that?" said Bastian.
Kin shrugged, settling into his chair and lighting a cigar "Call it a hunch..."
"There's something you aren't telling me...."
"Would you like to know that something possessed your body, told me something was going down out there, and to let you out? Or would you rather be ignorant?"
"Wait, something possessed me?"
"Twice." said Kin, putting out the match and blowing some smoke.
"What was it? The evil monster?"
"Not...exactly...I have no clue....but you or it or whatever did something and that thing is gone..."
"Gone? Gone where?"
"Like, gone. 100% outta here. Went beyond the last dark gate, off into oblivion."
"So it was destroyed?"
"Unless oblivion got a new definition in the last five seconds, yes destroyed."
"How?"
"Trying to figure it out...I'll get back to you."

I'm fixing that now.

Bastian awoke in the infirmary, an ache in his head and bandages up to his elbows.
"What on earth happened?" he asked to nobody in particular.
"We know don't." said Jefferey "I mean we don't know..."
"I feel like I just got skullfucked by a gargoyle...hows everyone else."
"Alright," said Hadrian, sitting comfortably "Feel like if I move my head is going to roll of my shoulders but other than that, I'm good."
"Good to know..."
Reuben was asleep, his chest bandaged and propped up on several pillows.
The mask was laying near the bedside table, as a nurse passed Bastian motioned to her and said "If you would be so kind as to pass me that mask, I have some questions."
The nurse nodded and handed him the mask. With the headache he had, submerging face-first into Kin's world was a godsend.

~~~
Kin was not paying attention and the feeling of Bastian entering his world was clumsy and obvious. Bastian stumbled a bit and said "I have some questions..."
Kin was sorting his memories and turned to face him "I suppose you would..."
"Start with why do I have a headache."
"That would be the aftereffects of being possessed twice...also you were trashing badly and bashed your head on the chair..."
"Alright," said Bastian, rubbing his head. "What was possessing me?"
"The first one was the Overlord of Shadow and the other was something with the power to banish it beyond the final gates and into the Primal Nether..."
"That's reassuring..." said Bastian "And the final question is..."
"Why is everyone else hurt?" finished Kin "Something I've feared but never spoken of...The Quiet Ones, something the Rhyle spoke little of a feared a great deal. They aren't demons of hell, but of shadow and before you ask they are dangerous."
Bastian sat down "Quick summary?"
"They never speak, hence Quiet Ones, they use stealth and deception to evade capture and they delete themselves from your memory if you look away from them. Also, they tend to use this ugly stuff...Imperiomancers sometimes use it if they are bad at their craft or phenominally evil. Blackglow Essence, comes from a flowering spore only found in the Veil...it infects the brain and lets you control it...painfully..." said Kin, sagging his shoulders a little.
"That's all I needed to know. I'll go now...unless you've something to add."
"No..." said Kin, trailing off.
Bastian left quickly, leaving Kin to his work. It wasn't long before another person entered his mind, thought this one was alien and strange.
"Bastian?" asked Kin, turning around.
Instead he was greeted with a welcome sight.
"Nicolaus..." said the shade of Silas, his form wavering a little.
Kin chuckled out of surprise. "You are full of surprises today."
Silas shrugged feigning a feeling of flattery "Well..."
Kin turned back around, burying his nose in a book. But he spoke, and though it was directed towards Silas, it had an air of absentmindedness.
"So much like astral projection, you have a source, but it isnt a direct 'point A to point B' line. Judging by the energy emission, you are a not a mental construct... tell me.."
He turned around and starred at Silas. "Why does the elephant pink in the month of Asia Minor?"
Silas had a confused look on his face. "Kin you doing alright?"
Kin chuck;ed again and turned to his work. "Well you arent an automated emissary with predesignated responses either. You think in real time. But I know you arent physically present near the mask. So how are you in here."
He tilted his head up, taking out the cigarette and letting the smoke drift up.
"Figured it out yet, Sherlock?" Silas laughed, his hands resting at his hips.
"If I didnt know any better I would think... you are playing me at my own game. Complete transference of a sentient beings mental status into a physical holding space. We knew it would come to this eventually, what with all the experimentation we did blending imperiomancy and geomancy. Being the two closest schools of magic in philosophy, I suppose it was inevitable somebody would try. If the mental can manifest in physical, cant the same be true of the reverse? Can you breath life into dirt, or are we still scrambling, trying to grab that which only God still holds exclusively?"
He stood up, pushed his chair in and leaned against the desk, arms folded.
"You are a mystery..."
Silas grinned. "So how did the new guy hold up?"
"Rueben? Oh he has held his own well so far. He was working through that whole incident instinctively. I mean, I gave him the situation, but he figured out what to do on his own, and fast too. If not for him, Bastian could have been the unfortunate victim of catastrophic psyche melt down. In fact, I think he could end up being better than me."
"Impressive."
"Indeed."
"So whats on your mind? Or mental projection, or whatever the hell Im looking at..."
"I'm changing..." said Silas.
"In what way?" said Kin in return, turning around.
"When I told you the Light gave me the power to create a soul, he didn't. He showed me how to create souls yes but it isn't snapping my fingers. I had to break off a piece of my own soul."
Kin put the book down and sat down, flabberghasted.
"You...broke off pieces of your own living soul?"
Silas nodded
"How long?"
"Since you died, I launched into it in full..."
Kin stared at him, his eyes burning holes in his image.
"More than a hundred times. A little at first, but the pieces I've taken got bigger and bigger. My soul is damaged beyond repair and..."
Here Silas swallowed
"The Light is...replacing it...with...something. I feel different, as though my footsteps are a brush of air. My head is dizzy and I have taken to fits of light-headedness and fainting. Malachi is getting quieter and quieter, and when I hear him he's afraid."
Kin walked over to the shadow but his hand passed through it. He held it where the shoulder was.
"I'm sorry" he said.
"No I'm sorry I didn't tell you the whole truth. My magic....it's all changing...my perditiomancy is gone...."
"The void stuff, when you got zapped. All that?"
Silas nodded "When I try to use it, there's these flashes of light and heat and sound. It's like a thousand furies rushing out of me in anger. I think I'm turning into something..."
Kin walked over to his memories, searching through them. He had to know what this was, he *had* to.
"That marriage of geomancy and imperiomancy we created was what gave the Mara their life, but it was the pieces of myself that gave them true souls...."
Kin stopped and looked at Silas
"They are truly alive now, not automatons...but I could have never done it without your help."
Kin got a little tear in one eye and he smiled big and wide. "I knew all we did wasn't in vain."
Then Kin's hand brushed the memory and it flooded into him. "Illusim!"
"Excuse me, Kin?"
"I'm sorry, erm...it was just so sudden. Illusim, angels as you might know them, they are the children of God. Basically they are each little pieces of him and have power like him. What you said the sound and fury that's..."
and here he showed a static image of an angelic figure sending down a bolt of energy from the heavens at a headsman who had just taken a head. "Just like it is in the Illuminomicon, when Archemorus was killed and the headsman was struck with the wrath of God. They said it was like 'the fury of God came down in light, screaming from the sun.' that sounds a lot like whats happening..."
Silas rubbed his hand and said "Look"
The symbol appeared there and Kin looked, confused and awed. The symbol of Pain, Malachi's symbol as the Punisher of Ill Deeds, was changing. It was still the true symbol but around it and up his arm it was a Steward's Mark. A new Steward's Mark, one Kin had never seen in the annals. It was like Illrian and Steward Marks had become joined, like they were in the Romanov girl.
"I've never seen....what..." Kin was speechless for a moment.
The mark faded and Silas pulled his hand back.
"Tell me everything about your Order. Everything you know..." said Silas, serious. His eyes shimmering purple a little. Malachi was listening as well.
Hadrian hopped out of bed, nearly stumbling.
"Ow..." He rubbed his temples. "That thing really did a number on my head." He looked around and found the flask that Pyotr gave to him on a nearby desk. He unscrewed the cap and downed the entire thing in one go. "Ah~, that's much better." He pocketed the flask and turned to face his fellow bed-ridden Guardians. "Are you guys feeling alright?"
