The journey is reaching its end, the Hero is facing down the ultimate enemy, and the world is drawing to a close. Everything goes according to plan, the Hero defeats the evil, the princess is saved, and the space station destroyed. And they all live happily ever after.

Such a common and yet under appreciated aspect of film. The happy ending is one that truly brings about closure, tying up the loose ends, and granting the audience the satisfaction of seeing victory at last. There is no cliffhanger, no sequel hook, just the end of a story, bookends and all.

With franchises becoming so important in hollywood today, we see very few true endings to stories. They always need a hook, and they have to leave a thread dangling for the next film to pick up and weave into the narrative. While ongoing narrative can be a good thing, much of the time it is unnecessary, and simply a means of the movie companies trying to milk you of your money. See: Transformers sequels.

Anyways, with this in mind, what would you say is the best example of a "true" happy ending? No little niggling plot threads left unresolved, just sheer closure.

My choice, Return of the Jedi. Apart from the Ewoks, there was no better way to end the Star Wars saga than on that fantastic high note.

For games: Bioshock Good Ending. The bad ending is somewhat of a "What happens next?" moment, but the good ending is so poignant.

Strange how you picked an ending that left no plot threads from a film that closed as the third in a trilogy.

Not all movies that grant closure as stand alone stories are happy though. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, for example is both happy and awfully sad. I pick that one. Made my eyes sting with tears, a really great film.

Inception...

HA, seriously, the Rush Hour movies, Kangaroo Jack, Shrek (the first one), and It's a Wonderful Life all come to mind. Now that I think about it, that's a rather eclectic selection of movies there.

Edit: A Knight's Tale is probably a better example than my previous responses. It was a great movie that probably could (should?) have spawned a sequel or two but didn't stuff in any plot hooks to demand one. Also a storybook happily-ever-after ending.

This is a tricky one... I was going to suggest Halo: Reach as at least having a sense of closure, if not being precisely happy, but then I remembered Jun (plus it's a prequal).

I did think of one though: Kill Bill (Volume 2, obviously). With the bad guys defeated, romances resolved and child found - though probably traumatised for life and destined to become an assassin - it's all wrapped up very well.

I confess I haven't seen that film yet, but I'll take your word for it. I chose ROTJ, because the Original Trilogy falls under my classification of continuing narrative done right. It needed to end, and they did at the right time.

And then the prequels reanimated the franchise's corpse and brought about the god awfulness of the unnecessary sequels.

Inception and The Hunt For Red October (take your pick of the movie or the book). I don't watch many movies.

Jin-Ro and Gungrave (the anime series) both had extremely poignant endings and I honestly couldn't imagine them with another. Not happy, but what had to be.

As to the happiest ending I enjoy? How to Train Your Dragon.

hmm... well... that's a toughie... honestly, if life is still wriggling around at the end of any story, then certainly there's allways going to be room for future events both good and bad, so i really wouldn't consider any story as having a truely happy ending.

one thing i can think of is the end to star ocean: till the end of time, where the universe gets destroyed. on the plus side, there won't be any more problems occuring on that side, lol. you could consider that a happy ending in some respect. as for what happens after that... gah, let's just hope everyone around here's too young to have played it. that ending is a can of worms. nvm. sorry.

You had to remind me of Jin-Roh? Damn that was a depressing film.

Honestly that ending made me feel sad and then guilty. Sad that he'd lost his leg and then guilty for the realization that thinking of life sans one leg makes me sad.

Is it wrong that I completely thought of something else when I read "Happy Ending?"

'The Fifth Element' had a pretty decent happy ending (in more ways than one). The big bad is killed/banished for another five thousand years, the dragon is killed and the hero gets the girl and a hero's welcome.

'The Road to Perdition', 'Platoon','The Departed' (in my opinion) and 'Moon Child' are examples of movies with less than happy endings that still had plenty of closure and no sequel hooks.

Well, All of Tom Clancy's books were great Stand Alone's, except Debt of Honor. If you don't know how that one ends, pick it up, along with it's direct successor, Executive Orders. I mean, those two are separated by about an hour. Other than that, he uses similar characters (Jack Ryan is his main character in most of them) but they also are just great reads to enjoy for their own sake. My personal favorite is a true stand alone he did in the '80s called Red Storm Rising. The way it ended was practically poetic. One of the main characters standing on the bridge of his destroyer, reflecting on the nature of war, and how glad he was that it was over.

Yeah, since that one is my favorite novel of all time, I have literally read it over 20 twenty times, I will choose that as my favorite ending.

For Movies... I think Drive Angry ended perfectly. If you haven't seen it, you wouldn't understand.

Perhaps not, Tarentino has stated that he wants to make Kill Bill: Volumes 3 & 4. The third to be released in 2014.

The light-side ending of Force Unleashed. That ending closed up the story nicely, answering my unasked questions and leaving me satisfied. The reason I don't count FU2 is because of how nicely the first one wrapped everything up. It would be like bringing back Palpatine in the form of a clone several dozen times /sarcasm

As for films...12 Angry Men is the only thing that really comes to mind. Loved that movie, original I mean.

Inception

just kidding...spinning top be damned!

Truly, pirates of the carribean the curse of the black pearl

If it's still a spoiler for you, well...just...WTF?

barbossa's dead and his crew likely to go the same way, will has accepted his pirate roots and is likely to marry Elizabeth, and best of all, jack had the pearl and his freedom.

"du du du du du...and really bad eggs...jump up me hearties yo ho!"

I know they got a sequel from it, but really, they could have pulled up any number of antics that could bite jack in the ass, and it'd still be believable, considering it's jack, after all.
